I might be wrong about this, so anyone else with a little more
experience please chime in, but my understanding is that
Squeezebox/SlimServer will not play any music with DRM. I think I read
that in the manual (can't quite remember).

Correct. You cannot play music that has been purchased from the
iTunes music store through a Squeezebox. Or any other network music
player for that matter, other than an Airport. Apple won't allow
this to happen, it is not a Squeezebox issue.

You CAN, on the other hand, very easily strip the DRM Apple adds to
the files and end up with unencrypted m4a files that will play
beautfully through the Squeezebox. You bought 'em, figure out a way
to use them in the way you want.

You are totally correct. The DRM protected AAC files will not play on
squeezebox. I have thus far REFUSED to buy any music from the apple
store for two reasons:

1. DRM (sure, you can strip it out, but that is trouble)
2. It has been only 128 dps AAC

Very recently, they started offering DRM-free music at 256 kps AAC, for
1.19 per song. I bought several cds recently recently, and as expected,
these play just fine on the slimserver.

2007-06-13 Thread Eric Seaberg

I had TONS of stuff purchased there. As a last resort I burned those
albums to CDR and re-ripped at Apple Lossless. In most cases, the time
and materials involved ALMOST equals going out and buying a hard copy of
the CD, but I'd already paid Apple for them.

BTW, re-encoding at Apple Lossless does NOT improve the quality... it
just doesn't make it worse (like going back to AAC would).
