Re: [slim] livedrive etc

2009-05-24 Thread jimmyb

Thanks for the response jo-wie.

The advantages of storing everything in the cloud are many. I don't
need to bother with backups (buying backup devices, the hassle of doing
the backup, the electricity etc). I can access my data from any internet
enabled device, from anywhere in the world. I can share things with
other people easily without having to send email attachments. I can
store my contacts in one central accessible place (rather than having
multiple contact lists across different email accounts and on my
mobile), etc. But I guess these things aren't important to everyone.

I take your point about the continuous, reliable datastream. Difficult
to know this without trying it out.

I'd still be interested to hear if Logitech have considered partnering
with livedrive.

In that case your backup would be the original files on your
computer. Their server could go down, data can get corrupted, they may
go out of business, who knows but I would have duplicates of any
such files and data regardless of where it is stored.

They have already partnered with MP3Tunes to do exactly what you wish
but in a simpler format and designed specifically for music and live
streaming.

Try streaming a music file from your online data storage to any device
or server program to test it yourself. :)

Point taken but they store multiple duplicates for you across different
sites. You could take duplicates yourself but your duplicates might fail
or be stolen or. How far do you want to take it? Are you gonna
backup your backup of your backup...? :)

I know they've teamed up with MP3Tunes but I've got lots of different
types of things to store (videos, photos etc) so Mp3Tunes doesn't really
fit my needs.

I understand the advantages, but in the special case of a computer
which runs the Squeezecenter I do not get the point. It makes no sense
in my eyes to load my library from a Internet source to my local SC
computer. I would store the data on this computer and keep it in the
cloud as a backup or maybe the possibility to access it from different
locations and systems.

I would make sense if it's integrated into Squeezenetwork as MP3Tunes
and you get rid of an local computer.

I have 3 (4 if you include the original CDs :-) ) copies of my music
library: a copy on my main PC to work on, a copy on my Linux SC server
and a periodic backup on an external drive.

It's a good idea to have also a storage in the cloud, but I would never
go without any local backup.

Yes, assuming they stay in business. Ask anyone who purchased music
from Yahoo music. :)

I'm all for online / offsite storage, but the day I rely solely on a
third party to safeguard all my data and files is the day pigs fly!

I understand you have everything backed up on there, therefore you want
that service to be accessible from your SB player for the music stored
there. Makes perfect sense.

But I highly doubt SD has any interest in building a connectivity
portal to such file backup systems (assuming these types of systems are
even capable of live, real time file streaming). They already have this
with MP3Tunes which is a live music streaming service of your uploaded
(backup) music files serving music streaming devices like what SD
builds.

[slim] livedrive etc

2009-05-23 Thread jimmyb

Hello
Not sure if I'm posting to the correct forum but I'll push on
clumsily

I was thinking of purchasing a livedrive account (www.livedrive.com)
for storage of my data (including music) in the cloud as opposed to
locally. I have three questions:

1) After installing the livedrive software, your storage appears as a
local drive on your pc (Windows only for now I think) so could I use
this with Squeezecentre by setting the music folder on my livedrive
drive as my Squeezecentre library?

2) If (1) is true then surely I can store my music in flac format and
still stream it from the cloud (unlike mp3tunes which does not support
flac). Assuming my internet connection is fast enough, of course.

3) Have Logitech considered synching livedrive with Squeezenetwork?

Regards
Jimmy

Where is the avantage to have your music in the cloud and to access it
thru the SC? You still need the SC PC.

As a backup - OK, as the only place to store my data - NO!

I would say yes.

And the company server do provide the data in a reliable and continuous
stream. Just have a look at the people which do have problems with the
lokal network and streaming FLAC.

My 2 cent
