It's understandable to have an initial knee-jerk reaction of oh God,
 not MORE compression, that's bad.

But IMHO this is good news. Dynamic compression is definitely desirable
in some listening situations - on a train, in the car, etc. And it's
patently obvious that the proper place to apply this compression should
be in the playback device. So the fact that Apple now provide such a
feature on the dominant music playback device on the planet - the
iPhone, and hopefully iPod as well - might possibly mean that we could
see less compression applied at the mastering stage. The only downside
is that Apple have called it late night mode, so some people might
never realise that it will be useful for noisy environments.

Late Nigth Mode may be to mimick the similar function that many AC3
(dolby digital) Recievers and processors have , for movies you can do
this to not wake the whole house .

Movies actually has dynamic range , the sad situation is that movies
even in lossy formats as ac3 or dts sound better than many popular
recordings

For those recordings that haven't already had the dynamic range of music
compressed beyond ruin by the loudness wars, your iphone can now do it

(No, this wasn't published on April 1I checked that first).
