I know Mark, I apologise for that. That was rude. I think the rest of it was fair. Ironically, I actually like the Slim remote. Does the job, snappy enough, feels OK. I'm stil using my SliMP3s and I love them to bits. -Original Message- From: Mark Lanctot [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 01 August 2006 21:25 To: discuss@lists.slimdevices.com Subject: [slim] Re: The remote is crap! Just because it's useful does not negate the facts that it is flimsy and damage-prone. It is? I've had mine for over 2 years and it's neither broken or worn! Yes, it's all this typing that does it. But seriously does anyone think that the new transporter remote is going to be an improvement - in shape at least? It looks rather like a brick to me, and therefore I can't imagine it being nicer to hold in the hand than the current one. James NOTICE: If received in error, please destroy and notify sender. I'll agree that it's not the most attractive remote in the world, but despite years of abuse, I haven't seen one of the remotes break. The new remote that comes with Transporter has some improvements including: - More attractive - More solid feel - Backlighting - Browse button - AA batteries for longer life We'll be offering these new remotes for sale as an accessory on our web site as soon as they come in. I'll post here when that happens. Further down the road I expect some of these improvements to trickle down to an upgraded remote for Squeezebox. -dean ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
RE: [slim] Re: The remote is crap!
I'm a long time fan of Slim - owning SliMP3 x 3 and a couple of squeezeboxes. I stopped posting here after I got a cr**py response from a long -standing list stalwart suggesting that I shouldn't post negative posts for fear of upsetting the developers. Thanks Jack, it really helped that. Shut me up anyway. I've lurked ever since. But I can no longer keep quiet. Slim stuff is cool, Slim stuff sounds great and Slim stuff doesn't compete with Sonos. A Nokia 770 is a really nice bit of kit and it's really clever that you can control Slim with it...and I've got a 770 and I really like it. But the Sonos controller is an awesome way to control music on a Sonos system and the two things do not compare. The 770 can control your windows and your sprinklers and that's really clever. The Sonos Controller can't because all it does is do a really good job, as in a better job, of controlling music on the system that it was built for. counterpoint to the Sonos remote - in your dreams. I'll buy a couple of Transporters because I want one for our Showroom and I've got a client who is going to love it but I can't get too sentimental about this product. It's still too geeky to put into most of my customers. I sell a load of Sonos and I get NO service requests on them. Like NEVER. I've just reread this and I know it read like flamebait but it wan't meant to be. It's a great product, I really like it. Multiroom audio is both a passion for me and something that pays the mortgage. The Slim product and the SlimServer software is not ready to be included in our range of customer offerings. Kudos to Sean and Dean and the team for the Transporter. Can't wait for mine -Original Message- From: Mark Lanctot [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 01 August 2006 14:36 To: discuss@lists.slimdevices.com Subject: [slim] Re: The remote is crap! shabbs Wrote: I'd rather SD keep the cost of the SB low by supplying a minimal remote and focusing efforts on the SB internals. I agree. It's the SB internals I can't do anything about. The remote I can always do something about - replacing it with a universal remote, for example, which I've done (my Marantz RC1400 that came with my receiver handles it just fine). Some have suggested that SB offer upgraded remotes as an optional accessory. I'm all for this, if you want/need an upgraded remote, pay for it. Offer SD-customized Nokia 770s, for instance. That would give a nice counterpoint to the Sonos remote, and it can be used for general web browsing and as a PDA too. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26017 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
