Re: [slim] Squeezebox 3 sibilance

2008-02-13 Thread Phil Leigh

You probably won't like this but that sibilance is (part and parcel of)
the Naim sound IME. The 112 isn't the greatest Naim item, TBH. The
recent Nait is much better IMHO.

If anything the SB is a little recessed at the top end.

One thing you might like to try is to reduce the level of the SB into
the Naim to prevent transient overloading (although I don't think that
the Naim is prone to that).

Try lowering the volume level to 85-90/100 on the SB.

Failing that, try altering the toe-in of your speakers and try a linear
supply for the SB.

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...SB3+Stontronics PSU - Altmann
JISCO/UPCI - TACT RCS 2.2X with Good Vibrations S/W - MF X-DAC
V3/X-PSU/X-10 buffer (Audiocomm full mods)- Linn 5103 - Linn Aktiv 5.1
system (6x LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend
Supertweeters, Kimber Chord cables

I guess I am not a true audiophile cause the first thought in my mind
is why is the topic on wheel alignment? :)

But you obviously are a true car enthusiast :)

Back to the topic. How is that sibilance coming from SB compared to the
original CD? I have some CDs that do that and I grew up to accept that
it's just the matter of the recording. One of them is Karajan/Wiener
Philharmoniker/Deutsche Grammophon recording of Mozart's Requiem and I
have no reason to believe that the soloists are nothing short of top
level artists. Still, it sounds like in 'Tuba Mirum' soprano lady does
nothing else but put ss,,sss at the end of every word. I tried it
on systems costing much more than my (tubes also) and the sibilance is
still there.

The sound stage will open up, bass will tighten and the imaging will
improve. DVD performance will also increase substantially:
