[slim] Re: NY times/ Pandora

2006-02-08 Thread andyg

It's a SqueezeNetwork-only feature because the interface to Pandora is
proprietary. SN allows us to write closed-source plugins that can take
advantage of things that wouldn't be possible in the open source server.

This was a major code upgrade to get ready for the Pandora service,
which we expect to have out by the end of the month.

The firmware upgrade on SN was a bug that we fixed.

I don't know if there are plans to offer audio ads, but for now the
only ads are web-based, so there is no way to have an ad-supported

Right, there's no 'All Streams' anymore, but would you even want it?
Just taking a rough guess here, there are maybe something like 3
streams if we were to combine all genre files together. The new plugin
has By Genre, Top 500, Random 100, and search support. Search is not on
SN yet though.

Search is only in the web interface for now. I will be adding it to the

in a single menu, there are just too many. Top 500 is probably the

OK, thanks for the clarification. I guess that probably works OK most
of the time. If I were writing it with Pandora in mind, I'd submit a
track after it had completely played, or as soon as the user gives it a
thumbs up. That way even a thumbs down near the end will not get
submitted.

[slim] Re: persistence of Shoutcast stations, implementation question in 6.2.2

2006-05-08 Thread andyg

Shoutcast stations have 2 URLs. The Shoutcast plugin gives you a
standard one that looks like this:
http://www.shoutcast.com/sbin/tunein.pls?id=12345&filename=playlist.pls

This link sends you a pls playlist file that contains 1 or more actual
links to the stream. If you add to favorites from the list of
stations, your favorite will include the tunein.pls link. If you add
the favorite from Now Playing after you've started listening, you'll
get the real stream link. Either type of link should continue to work.
Sometimes stations will change their stream links, but I expect that's
not a very common occurrence.

You did mention you're using 6.2.2 which includes an outdated Shoutcast
plugin that may no longer work properly. If you're concerned about this
you may want to try playing Shoutcast via SqueezeNetwork or downloading
a 6.3 nightly build.

The risk of using 6.3 should be low. To be safe, you could backup your

probably AAC+ stations which are filtered out. I don't know why you'd

[slim] Re: Now Playing in Win MediaPlayer 10 doesn't work

Does WMP handle the metadata from a live mp3 radio station? Try the
stream below to test. SlimServer sends now playing info in the same
fashion (interleaved metadata within the stream). I know it works with
Winamp and iTunes so my first thought is a bug in WMP.

I tried WMP9 and all this stream shows is "1dot4.fm - Fusion Jazz". It
doesn't display the currently playing track. I guess WMP just doesn't
support that feature of mp3 streaming.

Re: [slim] Duet vs Sonos

2008-02-06 Thread andyg

The 3-player limitation is Rhapsody's, it doesn't apply to any other
audio source. Syncing internet radio is hit or miss on SN because each
player receives a different audio stream and it's not possible to sync
those. If you want good sync your best bet is to run SqueezeCenter.

Here's how it breaks down for sync:

Code:

  SC7 SN (new datacenters)

  MP3 radio Yes No
  WMA radio No No
  Pandora Yes Yes
  Slacker Yes Yes
  MP3tunes Yes Yes
Rhapsody Yes (up to 3) Yes (up to 3)

Re: [slim] Duet vs Sonos

2008-02-06 Thread andyg

I don't claim to know anything about the Sonos architecture but I would
guess they only have one connection to the Rhapsody audio and then
transport the decrypted audio within their closed network to each
player. We can't do that, so each player needs a separate connection
to the Rhapsody server.

The reason internet radio can't be synced well when on SN is because
each player must make its own connection to the radio server, which
means each player will most likely start at a different point in the
audio. There is no way to sync the audio if they don't start from a
known good point. This is why sync does work fine for track-based
content such as Pandora - all the players will start playback at the
same time with the same exact file.

Right, players don't talk to each other, only the server. In order to
share a single Rhapsody connection, the server would need to talk
directly to Rhapsody, and this is not possible because our server is
open source.

Sorry about that. We've implemented some additional security features
on SN and this can happen if your external IP address changes very
frequently. We didn't expect many ISPs would hand out new DHCP
addresses as often as it appears they do, so we'll probably tweak the
limits as we get more info.

Who is your ISP?

How long is your ISP's DHCP lease?

Re: [slim] where is the SBC album art cache?

2008-04-05 Thread andyg

I think we might need to add a way for SC to tell SBC to dump it's
artwork cache after a rescan.

Re: [slim] Please help - Duet PIN not working, i've tried it all

2008-04-06 Thread andyg

A PIN is only needed if you are connecting directly to SqueezeNetwork.
You don't need it for SqueezeCenter.

Re: [slim] Apple Lossless - who is doing the decode? Squeezebox or SC7?

2008-04-07 Thread andyg

ALAC is transcoded to FLAC on the server first, we don't have ALAC
decoding in the firmware.

No, the country setting. But none of this is active in production yet,
not for a few weeks.

Not currently, perhaps SqueezePlay will offer this functionality, but
it won't get around the limit of 3.

This is possible but not supported currently. A good idea though.
There is another bug open to add a way to select a default Rhapsody
account per player, this should fit right into that.

What URL is saved in your favorites? A www.shoutcast.com URL with a
station ID?

Re: [slim] Internet Radio - Not ready for prime time

2008-04-09 Thread andyg

IIRC the Shoutcast station IDs are not permanent and so if you save a
favorite with one of those URLs it may point to a completely different
station at a later date. Nothing we can do about that.

Re: [slim] Internet Radio - Not ready for prime time

2008-04-09 Thread andyg

Yeah, and the majority of stations on Shoutcast are probably short-lived
anyway, so there is not really anything they can do to fix the problem
on their end. Maybe they could do something like Live365 does and send
you to an audio error like "This station is no longer broadcasting".
