Does this mean 'discuss' is being merged with 'users' on the Apache system?
Or is that an error in the new list name?

That is correct. We're combining both lists into the ooo-users list.
Although some people explained that the user and discuss list had
different goals initially, when they were first created, none of us
were able to discern any actually difference today in what topics were
being discussed. Both lists ranged from project discussions, support
questions, general chat, etc.

The OpenOffice.org project had 300+ mailing lists. The Apache project
will have far fewer lists, but hopefully higher energy, more active
lists. So we hope to have no more than 10 or so lists in the end,
mapping each of the legacy lists into a new list.

You can see the proposed mapping, for the top 100 OOo lists here:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Mailing+lists

-Rob

Thanks. That's an interesting page - first time I've seen the numbers of
subscribers anywhere. Is anyone else concerned that the number of 'users'
subscribers is only 1852? It seems remarkably few to me, especially as the
'dev' list has well over 600.

Many more users participate via the Community Forums, at:
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/

There are also versions in other languages:
http://user.services.openoffice.org/

The English-language support forum has over 45,000 members, for
example. Based on the feedback I've received, some users hate email
lists, while others hate forums. So we will continue to have both for
user support questions and users can select to participate in either
venues, or both.

-Rob

[discuss] Announcement: New Apache OpenOffice.org mail list to replace this list

2011-11-01 Thread Rob Weir
Please read this note in its entirety. It contains important
information related to this mailing list, its migration to the Apache
Software Foundation, and the steps you must take to ensure continuous
access to the list.

Background

As you may have heard, Oracle contributed the OpenOffice.org (OOo)
code to Apache in June. All new projects at Apache start in the
Incubator, a special part of Apache where new projects (Podlings)
and their communities are given special attention by Apache mentors
as they learn about Apache, ensure that the source code meets Apache's
license requirements, and work toward their initial Apache release.

In parallel with the coding efforts needed before we can publish
Apache OpenOffice.org 3.4.0, the Apache OpenOffice.org community,
working with the Apache Infrastructure team, is migrating the many
legacy OOo websites and other online services formerly hosted by
Sun/Oracle onto Apache servers. This has been a huge effort and we are
showing good progress in many areas.

You can read more about the current status of the migration effort on
this wiki page:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/OpenOffice.org+Migration+Status

Additional relevant information is published in our project blog at:
http://blogs.apache.org/OOO/

Resubscribing

Among the services hosted by Oracle on the legacy OOo servers are over
300 mailing lists, including the discuss@openoffice.org mailing list
you are reading now. In order to preserve your subscription to the
list, you will need to resubscribe to the new list address, per the
following instructions:

1.Send an email to ooo-users-subscr...@incubator.apache.org. This
should be done from the email account where you want to receive the
list messages.

2.This will generate a confirmation email which will be sent to
your email address. You will need to reply to the confirmation email
in order to complete your subscription to the new list.

3.To send posts to the new list, you will mail them to the
following address: ooo-us...@incubator.apache.org

4.And if you ever want to unsubscribe to the new list, you can do
so by sending an email to ooo-users-unsubscr...@incubator.apache.org

We invite and encourage you to follow the above steps and to
participate in Apache OpenOffice.org project. If you have any
questions, feel free to post as responses to this note, or send a
question to ooo-...@incubator.apache.org.

Notes

1. We recommend that you do not subscribe via a legacy
openoffice.org email address. It is uncertain at this point whether
these addresses will be supported in the future.

2. Archives of the legacy mailing lists are available here:
http://openoffice.markmail.org/

3. Archives of the new mailing lists will be available here:
http://markmail.org/search/+list:org.apache.incubator.ooo-users

I wonder if it´s possible to save in new Office 2007 file? Ex  .xlsx

Just save as an .xsl file. Office 2007 understands them as well.

What a great resource, Rob (I haven´t looked at it, but juding by what
you describe :), thanks for the heads-up.

I think that archive should be linked from the new Apache pages... so
that newcomers can have an historical reference and source of old tech
 support data.

I've added the link here, at that bottom:

And when someone like Google takes a shine to that system? Remember
Dejanews? (I know I've already mentioned this, but it's a real risk IMO)

Why can't the existing OOo-owned archive be copied over as a fixed resource?

This isn't a why? question. This is a who? question. If someone
wants to wget the old archives and make a gzip available for us to
upload to the website, then that may be possible. Or maybe there is a
more elegant solution? If anyone has an idea and wants to volunteer,
they should bring this up on the ooo-...@incubator.apache.org mailing
list.

You know that Oracle inherited OO.o by way of their purchase of SUN. Oracle
isn't going to provide support for OO.o as Sun did. They donated

their support for OO.o mailing lists and archives.  There is far too much
valuable information that was and is being passed in these mailing lists to
let them and the archives just vanish. Apache will host new lists.

All of the new AOOo lists will also be archived, both by Apache, but
