2011/8/23 Daniel Winje ibenhard.wi...@gmail.com: hi there, I just wanted to let you fine people over at openoffice.org to know that there are people out there trying to make money in your name. how do i know this? well i was sufring the net and looking for a new edition of openoffice when i i came over this site witch was telling you how good openoffice is and sutch (witch i allready know) and they posted a link to a download (by all means this is quite normal, witch was my thoughs at the time) so i klicked on the link and starte the download witch was described to be 141 mb but was only 665kb or something, odd. then i scaned it for virus and sutch, all ok and then i opened it to find out that it was a downloader (never seen an openoffice downloader before) and my thought was oh well ok, this is new, so i klicked my way through it and then it asked me to send a text message to 1963 with the message MAP so that i would get a code to unlock the download. Thing is that it costs you 40 kr (says so in the downloader) to send the message, about 4 € if 1€ = 10 kr (not sure at the moment). SO, what the fuck? hehe Could not see that you in any way had agreed to it, so i thought i would lett you know :) heres a link to the site: http://studio-no.net/openoffice.php its in norwegian sadly. any how, Thanks for your time. -Daniel Winje I have seen this kind of thing many times and in most case it's nothing illegal about it at all. In this case I don't really see why anyone would like to download it from their site. Why would you want to use a downloader? That way you need Windows to download it. If you download OpenOffice.org from http://www.openoffice.org/ instead, you need no downloader and you don't need Winwows. First is not illegal to sell open source software, companies do it all the time. The problem comes in if they represent themselves as the developer of the program, in this case OpenOffice.org. They also have to have at least as link to the source so that anyone can download it. I do not understand Norwegian so I can not tell how close they are crossing the line. I have send a message to the new development team at ooo-...@incubator.apache.org to see if someone can look into it. What is amazing is that people continue to do these kind of things without knowing that someone, someday, is going to find out and report back to the developers FC I used Google translate to see the page in English. I found no reference to authorship on the page I looked at. There also is no link to the source apparent, but I had to go looking for the the source for OO.o and LO. All that is required (I think I have this right) that the source code be made available at a cost no greater than actual cost of providing it. For binaries, you can charge what the market will bear. Not the GPL's words, but close. As I recall, the FSF charged a chunk of money (perhaps a couple hundred?) in the mid 80s for tapes of Emacs and Gnu C sources. That was a hell of a lot of money back then. My point is: It is not illegal to sell binaries if the source is made available, and the authors are acknowledged.
