Re: [SH-Discuss] Router compat.

2014-02-03 Thread Omar Rassi
with those requirements, you're looking at spending just that much on your
wireless equipment.

Here is a decent
modem
and this is the same one I have for my TWC
service.
 Here's a comparison of different mid-level wireless
routers.
I
selected these model routers because they support dual band capability,
multiple 802.11 protocols, and multiple external antennas giving you the
most coverage in the least complex setup. Keep in mind that getting your
signal to penetrate through the house and cover your yard may still require
the use of range extenders. Bear in mind range
limits and
possible sources of interference (another
list of interference
sources
, and another ) when
planning to cover large areas, for devices that operate outside, their
signal has to be able to travel the expected distance and penetrate through
the house to get to its closest access point. Another option could be to
get an external outdoor
antenna
that
can replace connect to the router and run that out to your roof for optimum
outdoor coverage.

Trying to cover both indoor AND outdoor reliably can be difficult, ask Alex
Kot, Chris Egeland, or Craig Bergdorf for more information as I'm most
familiar with consumer grade product that may not achieve your goal. And as
someone who must coordinate voice radio comms coverage between different
sites every year, signal issues can be difficult to anticipate and
troubleshoot.

I got a dumb modem at Wal-Mart for my twc. Get a nice router / WiFi device.
Especially if you need the range.

[SH-Discuss] Router compat.

2014-02-03 Thread Martin Pinkston
I am looking to get TW cable service.
On their website they list comparable modems and routers.
I am going for the $15. per month package.
I keep trying to find a compatible unit at office max or staples, but can't
seem to locate one.
What I'm seeing seems to far surpass twc's requirements.
The other requirement is that I will want to have the RPi sending video from it
perched on my R/C lawn mower back to my laptop.
My yard is 100' x 200' with the house in the middle.
And I'm not wanting to spend $200 on a modem/ router.
Thanks in advance.

[SH-Discuss] PROPOSAL TIME! We have A TON of laptops and desktops, wat do?

2014-02-03 Thread Omar Rassi
Thanks to Justin Herman's generous donations, its safe to say we have quite
a bit of excess and we can put it to good use to benefit Synhak, here's
how! And please feel free to speak up and discuss, I promise there will be
no bruised ego or hurt feelings from me, I want constructive input.
However, lets first remember that Synhak is NOT a place for e-waste
storage/disposal, lets not encourage hoarding of computer assets at Synhak
please. Also, I know its long, but please read my entire post before
responding.

Of the laptops and desktops we have, I'll sort out first which ones Synhak
will use as public workstations for the infrastructure, after that, I'll
identify a small set of laptops/desktops to donate to CanHax to help them
with their infrastructure, then the rest will be sorted and priced by RAM
type. This is what I was thinking for pricing, ALL MACHINES WILL BE SOLD
WITHOUT HARD DRIVE AND RAM BUT MUST PASS A POST TEST USING KNOWN GOOD RAM,
ALL SALES FINAL:

   - DDR1 Desktops @ $20
   - DDR1 Laptops @ $40
   - DDR2 Desktops @ $40
   - DDR2 Laptops @ $60
   - DDR3 Desktops @ $60
   - DDR3 Laptops @ $80

This is an easy matrix to follow, there is no refurbishing involved, no
need to go elbow deep into pricing by individual model/specifications. Just
make sure it turns on, screen is not cracked, and then put it up. Once a
set of computers are identified as redundant/excess, the sale procedure
would be as follows:

   1. A announcement is made on the announce list listing the models up for
grabs, by serial number and the pricing matrix is listing. The items will
   be available for 2 weeks.
   2. A person that wants one responds to the list claiming the serial
number they want to get. Members can veto an item's sale by claiming it for
a project (I.E. A members wants to turn a laptop into a slideshow picture
frame for the welcome bar). They have until the end of the sale period to
coordinate a pickup time with a Synhak keyholder.
   3. Anything not sold by the end of the time period goes up on
Craigslist. Anything not sold on Craigslist gets donated/given away to
   anyone wanting it.
   4. Money goes directly to Synhak Inc as a Quid Pro Quo
donation.
There
is no disclosure statement necessary (See section ii under no disclosure
necessary if...) but a receipt of purchase will be issued proving transfer
   of ownership.

ALSO, keep in mind that Justin has expressly stated that his donations to
Synhak are to benefit Synhak, as such they are the property of Synhak Inc.
NO ONE may pick one up to take home as personal property, and a member sale
veto must have the purpose of benefiting the space in some way.

This plan benefits the space by bringing in funds, keeps donated items
moving along so we have room for new donations, and allows a chance for
everyone to get a machine for themselves or a project. There are already
plenty of computers for everyone to use at synhak for projects, not all
unused computers will be sold, some will be kept as spares, and to set up
for a class that may need it. Any laptop/desktop that is not a complete
system will be retained for hacking purposes, keeping these kinds of things
were instrumental for previous projects like the Element14 movie, and
projects that needed capacitors or spare computer parts to make/repair
another computer/electronic gadget. This procedure and price matrix will be
brought up as a proposal at this Tuesday's meeting to discuss and to be
voted on with any changes agreed on at next Tuesdays meeting.
