I am concerned about spending money on a set of tools, and the tools being strewn about the space. A significant amount of what I saw on Angelo's list were general tools that anyone could use to fix lawnmowers, 3d printers, etc while I'm fine with that, how do we keep them from getting lost? also, I asked someone last week if we've tried to source general tool assortments in the past like this, so that we have a good working base, and the abbreviated answer was we've tried can anyone expand on our past attempts? where did we go wrong? how do we keep from repeating our mistakes? would love to discuss this more tonight, as with or without a bike shop, I see these as real concerns... Dear All Our family is out of town. Robert W and I are more than excited about the idea of having a dedicated bike hacking area at SYNHAK! We would like to thank Philip for his hard work and dedication to the space and to this project. Philip has Robert W proxy vote for tonight's meeting. Everyone please consider how this improves the space and has a vast potential to bring others to SYNHAK. Instead of discussion on what is wrong with this proposal or what needs attention, I am hopeful that those at the meeting will offer help to make it work. I find it so discouraging and damaging to morale when I see others that are excited about doing things or moving in a forward direction, and others just pick it apart. Please be a space that does things, not just one that discusses things. G, Justin, Michael, and others - The issue of tool usage and tool security is an important one and must be worked out to the general satisfaction of the members. It is premature to discuss a solution to a problem that does not exist yet. However, we can discuss tools at SH and come up with a plan to control and secure the tools that SH may buy from Angelo and tools that I will be bringing to the Bike Shop. Rather than open it up to an uncontrolled, time-consuming, free-for-all at tonight's meeting or a future meeting, I suggest that a few members get together to discuss tools at SH and come up with guidelines to ensure tool security and set policies on usage throughout SH, including the Bike Shop. In addition to myself, I want Angelo, Justin, Devin, and Michael on the tool committee. I am confident that we will be able to address the issue and come up with an overall tool policy that not only protects the tools at SH but ensures that they are available to all, with certain restrictions. Justin, I will be happy to answer questions pertaining to the Bike Shop Proposal as written and presented. Any questions about hypothetical situations or undefined future plans are not productive at this time. Let's keep the discussion in focus and concentrate on the proposal as I presented it to the membership. The proposal is a request for funds to buy tools and equip the area designated as the Bike Shop. All the labor is being contributed by specific members and a few non-members. Your name is not on the list of volunteers or contributors. If you or any other member have suggestions on how to run the Bike Shop, market the Bike Shop, or otherwise get involved in the project that you have not yet contributed any time or energy to, I suggest you wait until there is a Bike Shop at SH. If you think a Bike Shop at SH is a good idea, please support the proposal and allow the project to move forward. If all you want to do is extend the conversation and nitpick over details about things that don't yet exist, I suggest you re-direct your attention to any of the many unsolved problems at SH that continue to be ignored and not dealt with effectively. [SH-Discuss] bike shop proposal
Just a quick message to say Thank You! to the 9 members who voted to approve the Bike Shop proposal. I will remember you and your support when you submit a proposal that benefits the organization. The two who voted against the proposal can stand back and watch it happen anyway. I will begin work on the project tomorrow afternoon. With a little help from others, I will continue to work on converting the 150sq ft area into an attractive and functional Bike Shop that all of us can be proud of having at SH. In the next few days, I will post my work schedule to Discuss List with the hours I plan to be at the building. If anybody has the time and inclination to help, please email me or just come on down in your work clothes. Volunteers can help with painting the walls and floor, constructing 3 workbenches, marking the tools, hanging the lights, installing pegboard and hooks on the wall, and more. Plan on attending a party at SH when the Bike Shop is up and running. It may happen as soon as July 5th, during the monthly Downtown Art Walk. [SH-Discuss] [PROPOSAL] EE Lab Test Equipment
Problem: In the EE lab, we have a lot of resources to build things, but almost nothing to test the projects with. The only useful thing is the oscilloscope. Picture this: You want to tell if there is a break in a cable, but don't have any way to hook it up. If you had a continuity meter (a feature found in most multimeters) you'd be able to tell in just a few seconds. Solution: Synhak should allocate $150.00 of funds for the purchase of a CAT III rated autoranging digital multimeter capable of measuring voltage, current, resistance, and continuity, and an inductance/capacitance meter to measure inductors and capacitance. This way, we will have adequate test equipment to make in the EE lab. I think it would be best to look on ebay first before considering other sources. I have contacted Adafruit, Mouser, Digikey, and Sparkfun asking for a donation, and am waiting for a response. Perhaps it would be helpful if I had official letterhead?
