New Book Celebrates Greater Akron
Publication Will Assist Economic Development

Akron, Ohio (December 12, 2013) - Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic
today announced the release of a new book that will be a tool for the
City's economic development staff to tell the world about Greater Akron's
business history and success.
*Inventive.Industrious.Inspired: The Story of Greater Akron*is a
4-color hardbound publication sponsored by the Greater Akron Chamber and
the City of Akron. In addition to its narrative and photographs, the book
features 40 businesses and institutional profiles that showcase the
products and services that Akron is known for around the globe.
The book, issued by Cherbo Publishing of California, was authored
by Dave Lieberth, a former Deputy Mayor, lawyer, journalist and historian.
"Dave's knowledge of Akron's history, his work experiences, and
his devotion to the region, make him the perfect author for a book of this
nature," said Plusquellic. "Not only will our economic development team be
able to use it as a recruiting tool, but it will make a good holiday gift
for people who are proud of our community."
The handsome four-color book chronicles the region's leadership
in innovation, technology, and manufacturing, and celebrates the Akron
area's wealth of cultural and recreational offerings that make the region
the location of choice for businesses and industry.
Greater Akron Chamber president Dan Colantone says the
publication will be a particularly useful tool to tell the Greater Akron
story at international trade shows that the Chamber attends with city and
county economic development teams.
The book's publication was launched this week at the Chamber's
annual shareholders' meeting. The only retail sale of the book will be
through the Summit County Historical Society, which will receive all
proceeds of local sales. It may also be purchased from online retailer
Amazon.
To complement the print product and ensure global distribution,
the publication will also be available as a fully searchable, interactive
e-book.
The story of Greater Akron is the story of the renaissance of a
great American city from a canal town to a global center of biomedical
engineering,
Brookings Institution called Akron as one of America's leading
"legacy" cities, having leveraged its dominance in the tire and rubber
industry to evolve into a center of research and advanced manufacturing in
polymers, plastics, composites and metals.
The seeds for the region's future were planted in 1909 when the
first class taught anywhere in the world on the subject of "rubber
chemistry" was offered at the University of Akron. Today, UA is the
nation's largest center of polymer education, and the only Ohio university
to have an engineering program ranked in the top five nationally.

Akron, one of the world's leading centers of polymer research and advanced
manufacturing.

*About the Author*
Dave Lieberth served as Deputy Mayor of Akron for ten years and
has had a life-long interest in the community as a journalist, lawyer,
historian and civic activist. He was instrumental in the success of
Downtown Akron and helped develop the city's entertainment venues at Lock 3
and Lock 4. He remains the city's coordinator of summer arts programs that
include the free performances of the Heinz Poll Dance Festival and Akron
Symphony concerts.
Dave is a founder of Leadership Akron. He chaired Akron's
175th anniversary
celebration in 2000 and led the city's long-term visioning plan,
*Imagine.Akron:2025*. He wrote and produced the presentations to the
National Civic League in 1995 and 2008 that gained Akron two designations
as an *All America City*.
