A64 is supported by newest kernels, with some bits needed for display
mainlined only very recently. Sometimes Icenowy's tree works when mainline
doesn't.

ATF (package atf-allwinner) has patches for Teres included, but is untested.

No idea about u-boot; I suspect mainline should work but it's just a wild
guess.

You'd better ask on debian-arm (@lists.debian.org, IRC:OFTC). All of the
above bits happen long before any init is loaded, thus there's no difference
between Devuan and Debian. I'd expect you'll need some manual steps such as
"copy the dtb into the proper place" -- but way too often before getting
100% natively packaged you use vendor u-bootage and/or kernel with your own
userspace, there's no shame in doing so.

Hi Andrew,

it looks like your (USB) dongle needs to use the r8152 kernel driver,
which is included in the 4.9 kernel image available in ASCII. Are you
on ASCII, aren't you?

network devices have no associated device under /dev (at least in most
of the unix-like systems descending from either BSD or SysV). So you
won't see anything under /dev/.

What you might want to look at is instead:

  cat /proc/net/dev

At the very least, I'd like help understanding if this is a device/driver

You seem to have experience with both gtk2 and gtk3. And just *might*

Years ago I discovered the hard way (with a *huge* scrolling region)

Is this restriction still there?

My latest version of simple-netaid NO longer uses ifupdown. The
working mechanism is more low level. Now, open unencrypted connections
are supported although there is still an issue that sometimes
prevents auto-connect from working. A better approach would be to use
a list of preferred wifi-hotspots with ordered priority and for users
to choose the if and when to connect.

If I were to implement the latter in the front-end GUI, it would not
take very long for me.

The aim of MY simple-netaid IS NOT to enrich my CV. I did it for the
project. It seems a selfish self-centred motivation is more
appreciated here.

[DNG] Etherape's permissions and Linux Capabilities

2018-09-18 Thread Alessandro Selli
  Hello,

I recently installed etherape 0.9.13-1+b1 and found out it could not
do anything when run as an unprivileged user:

Error opening eth0 : eth0: You don't have permission to capture on that
device (socket: Operation not permitted) - perhaps you need to be root?

I could find an "EtherApe (as root)" menu item in my desktop's menu
under System, but it asks for the superuser's password and I don't like
that.

I then run the following command as root:

setcap CAP_NET_RAW=pe /usr/bin/etherape

And i can now run etherape as a regular user without entering the
superuser's password or setting the binary SUID root.

Could this be make a default setting at package installation, or at
least could there be some reference to this setting in the package info
and/or in the command man page?

[DNG] Thunderbird 1:60.0-3~deb and ApprArmor error "[GFX1-]: Failed to lock new back buffer."

  Hello,

Today I updated Thunderbird to version 1:60.0-3~deb amd64 from
pkgmaster.devuan.org/merged ascii-security/main.  And I found myself
impacted from this Debian bug concerning AppArmor:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=887973

I'm just letting you know I could solve it adding this line to the
Thunderbird AppArmor profile, that is to the file
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.thunderbird:

owner /run/shm/org.chromium.* rw,

I added it right after the line reading:

owner /dev/shm/org.chromium.* rw, # for Chromium IPC

/dev/shm is a sym-link to /run/shm.

The fix that is prioposed in Debian bug #887973 did not solve the
issue to me:

After editing the usr.bin.thunderbird file I also had to run the
following command as root:

  Hope it helps someone else.

The only existent README file for now was written by Edward Bartolo,
and it-s focused to the previous version of simple-netaid, written in

So, it's a bit obsolete. However, the new version of simple-netaid

Indeed, it's an alternative for wicd without dbus, written in C/C++
and Gtkmm-2.4.

Can they live together, or must wicd removed? What's the difference
between the two?

I've been testing both working together, and i've found the following
issue: the behaviour of wicd can be affected by the use of simple-netaid.
Not only because of possible failed attempts connecting or
disconnecting with wicd, but also for possible wrong information about
the status of the network connection.
In contrast, i didn' find this behaviour in the other way around; that
is, simple-netaid is not affected by the use of wicd. So, it would be
interenting to use both together in order to compare them.

BTW, i fixed another bug in the wired connections, and built the
packges for both architectures: i 386 and amd64. The packages are
operative now, but there are still some issues pending to be fixed: a
segmentation fault closing the application, the code for the hidden
active wifis, a socket sharing information between the
window_main_worker thread and the backend, and a lot of warnings
during the compilation.

Jochen

Thanks for your interest on simple-netaid :)

Can they live together, or must wicd removed? What's the difference
between the two?

I've been testing both working together, and i've found the following
issue: the behaviour of wicd can be affected by the use of simple-netaid.
Not only because of possible failed attempts connecting or disconnecting
with wicd, but also for possible wrong information about the status of
the network connection.
In contrast, i didn' find this behaviour in the other way around; that
is, simple-netaid is not affected by the use of wicd. So, it would be
interenting to use both together in order to compare them.

BTW, i fixed another bug in the wired connections, and built the packges
for both architectures: i 386 and amd64. The packages are operative now,
but there are still some issues pending to be fixed: a
segmentation fault closing the application, the code for the hidden
active wifis, a socket sharing information between the
window_main_worker thread and the backend, and a lot of warnings during
the compilation.

Thanks for your interest on simple-netaid :)

Aitor.

[DNG] Raspberry Pi 3B+ and Devuan blues....

2018-09-18 Thread Edward Bartolo
Hi, I installed Devuan ASCII on a Raspberry Pi 3B+. USB sticks are not
recognized no matter how old they are. It also had pulseaudio and the
pulseaudio mixer installed although I removed those. USB sticks were
also not recognized with Raspbian installed.

Please note, I am only after having a device node listed under /dev
with which I can access USB sticks. What can I install instead of
pulseaudio and the pulseaudio mixer. I remember there was a GUI mixer
under XFCE4, is it still available?
