Hi,

Testing on my workstation + some servers: it works like a charm, thank
you for your effort in improving our distro!

Dear dev1rs,

We are happy to announce that 'amprolla3', the rewrite of nextime's
amprolla by parazyd and Wizzup, is finally up and running and ready
to be tested.

The code can be found at:

https://git.devuan.org/devuan-infrastructure/amprolla3

The rewrite increases the frequency of merges (now performed
every few minutes, rather than once a day), meaning that new packages,
updates, and upgrades will be available almost immediately to Devuan
users.

We have set up a second host which will serve Devuan packages as
merged by the new amprolla3. It is now available at
pkgmaster.devuan.org and currently serves Devuan Jessie, Devuan Ascii,
and Devuan Ceres, including all the *-security and *-updates sections.
The host, pkgmaster.devuan.org, also supports https.

If you want to help testing the new amprolla3, you just need to:

- replace "auto.mirror.devuan.org" with "pkgmaster.devuan.org" in
  your /etc/apt/sources.list
- # apt-get update
- # apt-get install devuan-keyring

Then just use it as you did with auto.mirror.devuan.org. Please
report any bugs on https://bugs.devuan.org, as usual.

The current auto.mirror.devuan.org host remains up and running and
perfectly usable. Once the testing of amprolla3 is complete, the
transition to the new system should be seamless and transparent to
all users.

The new amprolla3 also provides support for the currently missing
Contents*.gz files (solving the apt-file bug). The feature will be
made available in the coming couple of days.

Re: [DNG] Debian testing drop redis non systemd

2017-10-18 Thread Alberto Zuin - Liste
Redis, for sure, is one of the most used in memory datastore, a good
cache system like memcache but more flexible when you have to store real
data and a standard SQL database is not fast enough: one common example
of application, is to store the authentication tokens in a clustered web
server environment. Maybe it is one of the most powerful component used
in almost every online system.

In my company we have a cluster of 12 devuan nodes with redis managed by
sentinel: yes, it is used. And, as someone else said, no it is not a
system tool.

Also, just a curiosity: Redis project started by an Italian guy which is
also in the VUA group.

Does anyone here actually use redis? I looked it up, and to me it looks
like dbus on steroids. An in-memory data store accessible by lots of
different applications. What could POSSIBLY go wrong?

Re: [DNG] Systemd Shims

2015-08-08 Thread Alberto Zuin - liste
IMHO, if an external program calls a systemd API, does it because want
that systemd does something.
Write 10-100-1000 systemd shims that don't do anything, simply returns
true is not a solution: in case, we have to translate the systemd
api call to the real daemon in execution and this could be an effort
bigger than evacuate systemd to 10.000 packages.

On 08/08/15 17:49, Mark S Bilk wrote:

It seems to me that it's good to have shim programs that satisfy
dependencies of apps on systemd, each shim performing some systemd
function. Here's why:

Suppose there are 10,000 application programs (apps) for Linux,
and their developers foolishly insert dependencies on systemd.

If Devuan developers write 50 simple shims to fulfill those
dependencies, then Devuan users can run those 10,000 apps
as they are, directly from the Debian repos. And when the
apps are updated, they will still run. The Devuan devs
don't have to deal with those 10,000 updates at all. And
the shim programs only have to be updated when the systemd
API that they are emulating changes.

Now suppose that systemd shims are not used. That means that
all 10,000 apps have to be patched by Devuan developers so they
don't depend on systemd. And all the 10,000 patched apps have to
sit in a Devuan repo that has to be maintained. And every time one
of those 10,000 apps is updated, the Devuan devs have to repatch
it to remove the systemd dependencies and recompile it. The
Devuan devs can request the app devs to remove the systemd
dependencies, but that has a low probability of success,
because the app devs have lemming-consciousness rather than
Unix-consciousness, and think that systemd is fine because
the major distros have adopted it.

So using a relatively small number of shim programs in Devuan
will save an enormous amount of work for the Devuan developers,
which will allow them to use their time for more productive
purposes -- making Devuan more generally useful and attractive,
thereby gaining far more users.

Now I realize that the idea of having those shim programs is
going to make some Devuan people scream, Unclean! Unclean!.
But the shim programs will be under our control and will
save us a huge amount of constantly ongoing work of updating
apps. And Devuan will succeed with only 25 developers and
administrators instead of needing 500.

So please drop the fear of contamination, and consider the
shims as a simple, inexpensive and effective wall of defense
against systemd.

   Mark

Re: [Dng] straw poll, non-free firmware for installers

2015-06-06 Thread Alberto Zuin - liste
When we have to install a distro on special hardware (an old dell
server?) it's always an annoying thing to use a second pc to download
the ethernet drivers, copy them to an USB key and so on.
Having them in on the same media, with the option to opt-out (so it's
not mandatory for the user to install it if not wanted), IMHO it's a
thing that can help the diffusion of our distro.

withdrawn any moment at their own will, which might be a quite
unpleasent surprise for Devuan...

Hi KatolaZ and others,

Since many other Linux distributions include firmware
without any special agreement, I think there is a reasonable
precedent for including such files, although certainly this
could be more thoroughly researched.

If, for considerations regarding free software, Devuan
releases *two* boot disk images, I would suggest they
be named something like DevuanWorksBetter.iso and DevuanMayWork.iso
so that people will know what to expect.

In which case, for manpower reasons, Devuan may opt to
release only the WorksBetter version, and develop MayWork in
response to future user demand or legal requirement.

IMO, the decision will ultimately rest on those actually doing
the work.

Joel

[Dng] How to official package compilation for a newbie

2015-06-05 Thread Alberto Zuin - liste

Hi all,
I always been behind the scenes of this mailing list because I don't
have the experience in how to do a distro that most of you have (I'm
more active on other things related to devuan).
Anyway, I just ended to de-systemd a group of packages on my laptop
(erlang) because I need it for work: it's my first experiment in that
sense, so if someone more expert than me woult take care of this package
in the official repository, I'm happy to give him all the steps that I
did; if there isn't a volounteer, but someone (Nextime or Jaromill)
could give me some information to make the things in the correct way,
I'm happy to maintain this group of packages now and in the future.

Thank you,
Alberto
