Re: [DNG] We need upgrade reports

I have three laptops I upgraded from Ascii to Beowulf over the summer.
They are "production" in the sense that I use them every day. They use
XFCE as the DE. I am very happy with beowulf on these systems.

[DNG] Problem with linux-headers in beowulf

2019-09-09 Thread lpb+devuan
I can't /dkms install/ some modules in beowulf because this:

# apt-get install linux-headers-amd64
Reading package lists... Done

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

Martin, et al.,

I think it was Steve who brought up the idea that there are different
places to enable user services, and I'd like to posit there are at least
two different kinds of user services:

* per-user (for all sessions)
* per-session

On my machine I use runit to start a per-user tor and per-use privoxy;
all my sessions share those services. On a per-session basis I see
things like pulseaudio (if you use it), ssh-agent, gpg-agent, screen
locker, and other services that you would shut down when a session closes.

You can start the per-user services either in /etc/services (with runit
strting runsvdir) or as a lazy-instantiation per user on first login.
These serives would persist and be shared across user sessions.

You can start per-session services in .xsession or .xinitrc, or .bashrc
and .bash_logout.

So I would recommend thinking about having two sets of services,
per-user and per-session, and perhaps having "uservice --user" and
"uservice --session" to manage each different kind.

[DNG] Upgrade to Beowulf - two issues

2019-04-08 Thread lpb+devuan
I have upgraded two laptops from ascii to beowulf, and have noted only
two issues. Overall, things really look great.

1. apt-get upgrade is telling me it wants to hold libequinox-osgi-java
back. That's not surprising; the candidate version in beowulf is
3.9.1-4, but installing that version will wipe out the rest of my
eclipse 3.8.1-10 installation. There do not seem to be any upgrade
candidates for, e.g., eclipse-platform beyond 3.8.1-10. It seems strange
to only have this one java lib advanced to 3.9, and nothing else.

And yet that's the case at packages.debian.org as well. So I guess I
will just get Eclipse from eclipse.org instead, and wipe the one that
was published/installed from the repos.

2. I am using pulseaudio on these machines because, well, it just works.
However in beowolf I am not seeing the pulseaudio server launched with
my Xsession. I wonder if a file got removed from Xsession.d? In the
meantime, I can launch it by hand, and if I worry more about it, I can
launch it in .xsession.

I'm happy to report no other issues with beowulf, other than the known
problem of /usr/bin/w reporting no login info when using the slim DM.

And containers are not a new idea, see, e.g., LXC and its kin. So there
are in fact people working on alternate solutions in the same space as
systemd, not with the same monolithic approach. And these alternate
implementations are trying to be best of breed in their own space, while
playing well with others.

If you have a BIOS that will boot from a USB disk then you can encrypt
your whole hard drive. You have to protect the USB disk, though, and
should probably keep a few in case one fails.

Re: [DNG] Failure installing eclipse on jessie

2017-12-04 Thread lpb+devuan
Daniel, thanks. In the mean time, I have downloaded the package directly
from the URL you gave below, and applied with dpkg -i. I hope the
amprolla3 server becomes fixed as you describe below.

Hi KatolaZ, thanks for the suggestion. I *had* updated several times,
and in fact also tried adding ascii to see if that would help. The ascii
release has 1.6-3 of the package, and gave me exactly the same error
(404) yesterday and this morning (after another apt-get update).

Maybe the Debian tor repo is broken? From the other replies, the non-tor
devuan/debian repos seem to have the package just fine. How best to
diagnose while still using tor?

Thanks

[DNG] Failure installing eclipse on jessie

2017-12-03 Thread lpb+devuan
On jessie, I'm having trouble the eclipse package, because I am getting
a 404 on a java package. Here's the error I get:

Err tor+http://devuanfwojg73k6r.onion/merged/ jessie/main
libcommons-pool-java all 1.6-2
  HttpError404

Here is my sources.list:

deb tor+http://devuanfwojg73k6r.onion/merged jessie main contrib
deb tor+http://devuanfwojg73k6r.onion/merged jessie-updates main contrib
deb tor+http://devuanfwojg73k6r.onion/merged jessie-security main contrib

Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: [DNG] ..proper use of /merged and /devuan, was: Trouble with apt-get upgrade over TOR

2017-10-24 Thread lpb+devuan
This is my sources.list:

deb tor+http://devuanfwojg73k6r.onion/merged jessie-updates main contrib
deb tor+http://devuanfwojg73k6r.onion/merged jessie-security main contrib

That's it, no changes from that.

I didn't change anything on my side, and now it seems to be working.

[DNG] Trouble with apt-get upgrade over TOR

2017-10-23 Thread lpb+devuan
I'm having trouble doing an "apt-get upgrade" over tor+http. The update
works fine; my guess is the manifests have bad information. Here's what
a session looks like (see below). Am I doing something wrong?

I would have posted this to the bug tracker but I'm not sure to which
package to assign it.
