I'm just a user and not sure about the discussion.  But if this has
something to do with permissions, well I'm used to su to root and do
what ever I want to do. Things have changed, now I need to sudo to run
'upgrade-system', it does a dist-upgrade and runs deborphan with the one

Ignore the above post. It was a fluke, I've tested two more systems

thing. :)

Well I'm just reporting in that I did a couple of Beowulf XFCE installs
on a spare hard drive, merged and unmerged.
AMD64 A10-18650.  Everything seemed to go ok in both cases and other
than polkit problems, I think I could have swapped either out for my
desktop ascii system.

When I hit the merge/unmerge question on the expert install, knowing
what to expect, it was straight forward, but I have to agree with Adam
Borowski, for a "normally" running system the question is unnecessary at
least at this point in history.

If I picture myself a couple of decades ago faced with such a question
on a Debian text install, I can feel the stunned, questioning, heated
panic coming back, "a deer in the headlights" if you will.

So keep the knobs for the knobs in the expert install, no need to
startle the new folks making the step to Devuan.

PS. BTW thanks for putting together the mini.iso, it is a convenient way

Steve, the mini.iso is a netinst. It downloads almost everything from
the net, including tasksel, which is one of the components of
debian-installer. I tried it yesterday, and it works perfectly.

I am not asking you to try the installer: I would like as many people
as possible to report problems with the choice of
merged-usr/non-merged-usr in unstable/beowulf.

Please consider that Beowulf is still under working, and most of the
desktop stuff is still to be fixed (in terms of policykit and
friends), so for instance you will not have any button to
suspend/reboot/shutdown. Please just focus on issues related to the
merged-usr/non-merged-usr setup at this point.

Thanks

But you wanted us to test the installer. The installer must have a

As far as the other problems I reported, in the next few days I'll

If you were so smart to know how to do that one week ago, as you
seemed to suggest in your previous email, why didn't you move a single
finger to get it done, or to propose a patch? :)

Chatting is cheap. Proposing solutions that "work for me only" is
easy. Providing mechanisms that do not break thousands of existing
installations and do not drive people mad is a totally different
story, as you might probably know...

It's not that easy, since you also have stuff in pre-inst and

For unmerging you'd just have to know which files belong where in the

I don't think there's a point in an installer question -- it's trivial to
add the merge later with a single apt command. An installer question is
pretty costly -- it is seen and has to be answered by everyone who installs
at the given debconf level. Thus, such knobs should be reserved for things
that 1. make sense to be asked to most people, or 2. would be hard to
recover from if not given at install time (like _undoing_ usrmerge).

o_O

That's a test image, but nevertheless, here you go:

 $ md5sum mini.iso.20181117
 4735f2bb2bf7cd34f65c66b397f8ba42 mini.iso.20181117

 $ sha256sum mini.iso.20181117

[DNG] no-usr-merged: let's get concrete

2018-11-19 Thread KatolaZ
Hi All,

in the last few days we have seen many people going at lengths with
the pros and cons of a non-merged usr. That has been a great
discussion. We have put together a solution that consists into
choosing if you want merged-usr at install time. It's available in the
current unstable installer:

https://pkgmaster.devuan.org/devuan/dists/unstable/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/mini.iso

It would be great for the vocal support against usr-merge to become a
concrete piece of help to maintaining choice in Devuan. So if you
care, please install beowulf/ceres using the mini.iso above and help
testing all the possible scenarios of non-merged /usr, to discover any
potential issue/breakage there.

Note: the mini.iso is a barebone netinst, and tasksel does not
currently work (I am on that). The "Package selection" step will
fail. Just skip it, continue with the installation, and then install
stuff with apt-get after reboot.

Please report bugs on https://bugs.devuan.org. We are currently
upgrading many packages in unstable, including reportbug, so either
use the reportbug version from ascii or just use reportbug to prepare
the report and then send the email it creates to
submit[at]bugs.devuan.org

Your help is very welcome.
