After a few minutes of starting the same effect is produced as in XFCE
4.16 with the Compositor activated, the screen freezes, the mouse cursor
moves but the buttons do not respond.

I am now using XFCE 4.10, the version that came with Jessie, with
Compositor enabled and I am not experiencing screen freezes.

My personal experience with Geforce MX series is, that these cards run
very unstable, regardless if used with Windows or Linux. Especially the
ones without FAN suffer from thermal issues. Since compositing uses
GL acceleration, the chance is high the card just crashes as soon some
GL operations are performed and cards warms. In addition, such old
hardware may already have cracks in solder junctions or instable
onboard power supply due dried capacitors.

You could test what happens when running glxgears (in mesa-utils
package) in unsynchronized mode for a while. (It will put some load
on the GPU):

$ vblank_mode=0 glxgears

cheers,
Andreas

The nouveau driver is notably buggy on 'old' hardware, twenty year old graphics
hardware is positively antique.
Nvidia hardware past five years old should be considered 'Legacy' and only
legacy OS's should be expected to function, certainly not modern compositors.

Yes, Nvidia sucks! But I have to deal with that for now.

I kept testing and can conclude that AppArmor does not cause the
freezes.

In the case of the PC with an Nvidia graphics card the freezing problem
in XFCE disappears if the Compositor is disabled in the "Window Manager Tweaks"
Settings or using this line in a TTY:
xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/use_compositing -s false

I also tried other DEs, for example LXDE worked without problems for me,
on the other hand LXQT freeze immediately after starting it, the same with
Mate. I also tried Enlightenment and it seemed to work without problems,
although I didn't use it for long. I did all of this in live-mode.

So far it is not clear to me if the freezes in XFCE with the Compositor
enabled, are due to the nouveou driver, or that my graphics card has an old
version of OpenGL (v1.2) and 64MB or that the 3GB of RAM in the system are
insufficient.

Bzt: Friends don't let friends buy Nvidia cards for Linux. Nvidia
cards cause screen artifacts, hangs, and spontaneous reboots. Radeon is
the way to go: Most modern Radeon cards have good drivers baked into
the Kernel.

I had spontaneous reboots and hangs with my new computer after buying an
Nvideo. Replaced it with a Radeon, all was good.

The Nvidia might or might not be the root cause, but it's a good idea
not to have an Nvidia card in your Linux box anyway.

I experience screen freezes after a few minutes of starting XFCE.
This Alpha version of Devuan Chimaera loads normally, but after opening
an application or interacting with the OS, the screen simply freezes,
the mouse pointer moves but none of the click buttons respond, I just
have to do REISUB to restart the OS using the keyboard.

ISO used: devuan_chimaera_4.0.alpha_2021-07-16_amd64_desktop-live.iso
Device used: USB stick

Hardware:
1. Netbook, CPU: Intel Atom N2600, GPU: Integrated controller, RAM: 2GB.

In this netbook the problem leave to appear afterwards to edit the GRUB
to turn off the load of AppArmor, with apparmor=0.

2. Desktop PC, CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+, GPU: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440,
RAM: 3GB.

In this PC the problem did not disappear deactivating AppArmor.

Possibilities:
- Too old hardware?
- AppArmor?
- XFCE, now 100% with GTK3?

Hi, I downloaded: devuan_chimaera_4.0.alpha_2021-07-16_amd64_desktop-live.iso,
and tested it on real hardware.

The desktop looks the same as the screenshot except for the wallpaper,
the wallpaper with the Devuan logo does not appear, it has a generic
XFCE wallpaper.

Correction: One is amd64 OS and the other is i386 OS. Hardware is 64-bit
capable in both cases.

[DNG] desktop-live chimaera isos

2021-07-16 Thread fsmithred via Dng
Chimaera desktop-live isos are ready for testing. They can be downloaded
from files.devuan.org or from your favorite iso mirror.
https://www.devuan.org/get-devuan

Let me know if the desktop does not look like this.
https://transfer.sh/1C8R6Pg/Screeshot_desktop-live-chimaera.png
We're getting different results with the i386 isos on different machines
booting in qemu. One is amd64 hardware, other is i386.
