Especially the ones without FAN suffer from thermal issues. Since compositing uses GL acceleration, the chance is high the card just crashes as soon some GL operations are performed and cards warms. In addition, such old hardware may already have cracks in solder junctions or instable onboard power supply due dried capacitors. You could test what happens when running glxgears (in mesa-utils package) in unsynchronized mode for a while. The nouveau driver is notably buggy on 'old' hardware, twenty year old graphics hardware is positively antique. Nvidia hardware past five years old should be considered 'Legacy' and only legacy OS's should be expected to function, certainly not modern compositors. publickey - g4sra@protonmail.com - 0x42E94623.asc Description: application/pgp-keys signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ Dng mailing list Dng@lists.dyne.org https://mailinglists.dyne.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/dng

Yes, Nvidia sucks! But I have to deal with that for now. I kept testing and can conclude that AppArmor does not cause the freezes. In the case of the PC with an Nvidia graphics card the freezing problem in XFCE disappears if the Compositor is disabled in the "Window Manager Tweaks" Settings or using this line in a TTY: xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/use_compositing -s false I also tried other DEs, for example LXDE worked without problems for me, on the other hand LXQT freeze immediately after starting it, the same with Mate. I also tried Enlightenment and it seemed to work without problems, although I didn't use it for long. I did all of this in live-mode. So far it is not clear to me if the freezes in XFCE with the Compositor enabled, are due to the nouveou driver, or that my graphics card has an old version of OpenGL (v1.2) and 64MB or that the 3GB of RAM in the system are insufficient. -- gast0n ___ Dng mailing list Dng@lists.dyne.org https://mailinglists.dyne.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/dng

Nvidia cards cause screen artifacts, hangs, and spontaneous reboots. Radeon is the way to go: Most modern Radeon cards have good drivers baked into the Kernel. I had spontaneous reboots and hangs with my new computer after buying an Nvideo. Replaced it with a Radeon, all was good. The Nvidia might or might not be the root cause, but it's a good idea not to have an Nvidia card in your Linux box anyway. I experience screen freezes after a few minutes of starting XFCE.
