[DNG] request for assistance
Greetings When I put this system together ( a LONG time ago) nvidia was not quite the pariah it has become in the open source community. So I'm stuck with nouveau for drivers (its a long explanation but trust me I'm STUCK there!). Nouveau is really not as wonderful as it purports to be and I would love nothing better than to move to a Radeon solution except changing the whole system for that is just a little cost prohibitive and then newer gpus are mostly limited to at best 4 outputs and I have 5. Don't really want to buy 2 cards either as that makes things just too bloody expensive. So a new system is on hold until this one shows definite signs of imminent demise or somebody drops a bunch of $$$ into my pocket (fat chance of that!!). So I have filed a bug report over at nouveau's system and they are telling me to do something that I just can't find any information on the web as a how to. Maybe someone here knows this area (kernel/gpu/drm/whatever other software they're dragging in!) and could advise. I'm told to: rebuild the kernel with CONFIG_NOUVEAU_DEBUG_PUSH=y followed by: boot the machine with drm.debug=0x16 log_bug_len=50m nouveau.debug=disp=trace (the second command is maybe covered here: https://www.howtoforge.com/tutorial/kernel-boot-parameter-edit/ but if there is a better/easier way please advise!!) Is there anyone who can help? (I really want to use that 4k monitor - - - I've been looking at it for about 8 months now and when I connect it well - - - I get 2 to 16 hours of uptime and then its time to reboot - - - a royal pita() at best) TIA ___ Dng mailing list Dng@lists.dyne.org https://mailinglists.dyne.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/dng

(Means I have partitions for root, var, usr, usr-local,swap and home.) This means that most often I have to use 'expert' install even though I'm no bloody expert. It is very likely that when I chose expert install that it was chosen for me to use a versioned kernel. Not recognizing that is very much a function of me using expert tools where I understand a very small part of what I'm actually doing. What probably happened is that you selected the versioned kernel in the devuan-installer when you first installed that beowulf system. The installer gives you a choice between a versioned kernel and one that tracks the latest version. I don't remember if that choice is available in the default install or only in the expert install, though. Agree. Here follows my 2c based on recently experiencing something similar to install Devuan-chimaera. (I'm chasing hardware support), Caveat, none of my systems (all PCs) use EFI boot. It just insn't reliable for me. YMMV. However, I notice a couple of things doing something similar when attempting to start via a basic Devuan-beowulf install. Using the desktop iso on auto mode, if I just threw the whole hard disk at the install(guided partition), it created five spaces; filler, efi partition, vary large data partition and exceedingly small swap partition, then filler. It then went on to do an 'efi boot' install that failed on my hardware. If you want to do it manually, via expert mode, then I'd suggest using gdisk and set up he partitions in a similar way. You will just need to set the efi-partition to msdos type as specified in the replies above. gdisk defaults to labelling everything linux-data. Unfortunately, you then have to run through all the steps of the install until if finally installs the boot system. In my case, it just kept saying that 'failed to install grub boot loader' or such. Very frustrating. Plus I have no idea of what I did different (hair part?0 so that it finally worked dong an expert install. Just maker sure you are telling the hardware to use the efi boot. Do you need to frag the efi boot partition to the top of the boot list on the hardware? I've found with different motherboards from the same manufacturer, that there are differences in how you can set the boot order. In some cases, going to the motherboard(bios) boot menu and selecting a partition was all it needed to set it permanently. In a different model of the same family of motherboards, I had to actually drag it to the top of the listed options. Hopefully my 2c gives you some ideas. > TIA ___ Dng mailing list Dng@lists.dyne.org https://mailinglists.dyne.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/dng
Re: [DNG] Request for assistance with install
I've had intermittent trouble with Devuan/EFI from day 1, when I got a new MB/SSD and found out I had to use EFI for my hardware to work. Most recent was a bad grub update (you may recall that was a topic of conversation here a few months back. Latest (yesterday) was my MB battery dying, and having to replace that! I could not boot, no matter what settings I picked (the no legacy boot thing seems a little different in my most recent bios, but pretty sure I turned it off.) Solution: I booted with a refind thumb drive, and followed the instructions here: https://wiki.debian.org/GrubEFIReinstall which may be all you need to do to get your system booting. I found when I booted that /boot/efi was not mounted, even though it was in my fstab. I mounted it when the instructions called for it, and everything else worked smoothly. I was able to boot without my thumb drive, just now! Perhaps this will help. I used refind version 0.13.1 (downloaded in Feb, when I had trouble with the grub update). After this, updates to Devuan work fine, and the boot loader works normally. --Tim On Tuesday, May 25, 2021, 10:54:58 AM EDT, o1bigtenor via Dng wrote: On Mon, May 24, 2021 at 9:56 PM Patrick Bartek wrote: > > On Mon, 24 May 2021 20:46:06 -0500 > o1bigtenor via Dng wrote: > > > On Mon, May 24, 2021 at 4:51 PM o1bigtenor > > wrote: > > > > > > Greetings > > > > > > Tried a migration from Debian Buster to Beowulf - - - nope. > > > Downloaded the DVD and got almost all the way through the install. > > > Got stuck when the install demands a place to install grub and this > > > is an EFI setup. > > > > > > > Thought I'd check things. > > You bet - - - - had it on legacy boot not efi boot. > > Changed that and did another install. > > At the boot after install - - - oops - - - no joy. > > > > Complaints of no run init: can't execute /sbin/init: no such file or > > directory. > > > > Now this I have no ideas on how to fix - - - - please advise. > > > > (This is using the devuan dvd to install from. (I think doing it might be a lot less time > consuming that guiding me through the doing of it - - - especially as > I have essentially zero programming skills) > > Please? > > TIA Hi I had the same problem with a Panasonic Viera TV. Here below the way I have solved. You need a valid right modeline for your tv/monitor with the desired resolution/refresh. You have the hardware specs of your tv/monitor, and its EDID file you attached which has: DTD 1: 3840x2160 30.000 Hz 16:967.500 kHz 297.000 MHz (1872 mm x 1053 mm) Hfront 176 Hsync 88 Hback 296 Hpol P Vfront8 Vsync 10 Vback 72 Vpol P Using these informations you should be able to find the modeline you need. See: Modeline Database - MythTV Official Wiki https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Modeline_Database Working with Modelines - MythTV Official Wiki https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Working_with_Modelines * Modeline Calculator https://arachnoid.com/modelines/ videogen http://www.dynaweb.hu/opensource/videogen/ Debian -- Package Search Results -- videogen https://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=videogen=names=1=all=all Your modeline will be something similar to: "3840x2160_30.00" 339.57 3840 4080 4496 5152 2160 2161 2164 2197 -HSync +Vsync (Be very careful because using an incorrect modeline may DAMAGE the display.) Once you have the right modeline, you need to pass it to xrandr for each session. If you are using a DM (e.g lightdm), you can configure it to run a script when starting each session. Here is how mine is (you should change it accordingly to your tv/monitor model and modeline): ~~~ #!/bin/bash # ## DISPLAY SETUP # Modeline for Panasonic Viera 32" HDMI LCD TV (model: TX-32LX52F) xrandr --newmode "1216x684_60" 74.160 1216 1356 1396 1648 684 707 712 750 +hsync +vsync xrandr --addmode HDMI-1 "1216x684_60" xrandr --output HDMI-1 --mode "1216x684_60" ~~~ Regards al3xu5 -- Say NO to copyright, patents, trademarks and industrial design restrictions! The mode file is just a little bit different than the one that cvt proposes. (Sunno why and there are some other goofy things going on but if I can get it working - - - - I can live with the rest!) [DNG] Request for assistance
Greetings (Asking this here as so far I've seen some seriously skilled folks connecting in!) I've been working on getting a HiSense 50" TV (3840x2160_30) working on a Nvidia GTX1050 Ti graphics card. I have a second graphics card (Nvidia GT (IIRC) 570) with a present stable of 4 -1920x1080 monitors. I am running Nouveau rather than proprietary Nvidia software and get to use xrandr to set up my graphics system after every boot but although it took me a while to learn how to do this setup its pretty quick now. Part of the 'fun' in wanting to add the 3840x2160_30 monitor is that EDID has become a more than somewhat 'challenging' system. Enough so that I was able to find this: https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/v5.6/driver-api/edid.html Creating this 'custom' EDID is a long ways from my wheelhouse - - - I have spend some time today trying to find some of the stuff indicated on that page - - - - can't find anything (maybe also a good thing!). I am going to attach (hopefully the list accepts attachments) 2 files which give enough information so that someone with the requisite skills could create this 'custom' EDID that I need so that I could then use xrandr to get this monitor working. Is there someone who might be able to do this? (I think doing it might be a lot less time consuming that guiding me through the doing of it - - - especially as I have essentially zero programming skills) Please?
