By comparison, the wifi in my Thinkpad T420 requires the non-free firmware:

iwlwifi :03:00.0: Detected Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6205 AGN,
REV=0xB0

I powered off, removed and replaced the battery, and booted up again
and wifi works fine still. So it appears the nonfree firmware wasn't
needed for anything on my install, at least so far.

Apologies again, but I feel I should share one more relevant
observation. The one thing that DOES appear to have changed since
removing *nonfree is that the WICD icon disappeared from my panel
(xfce, top right corner, default icon setting there). Seems relevant,
again because it's the only noticeable difference so far.
