Re: Arabic letters for folder/file names

Hello Mohammad,

Which Distribution are you using?

My keymap does not more work, since I have upgraded to Debian/Sarge.
They are really big changes in the console and under XFree86/X.org.

Currently I am rotating because I need farsi and arabic for my work.
I was trying to get the console working with a modified version of
fribidi so I can use it with mutt but as I told you, since Sarge
it does not more work.

I am sure, we are not allone with this problem.

And then, a Console Font can have up to 512 characters and
LatArCyrHeb-16+.psf does not use all. What I like to get is a
console font which support farsi, arabic, hebrew, 8859-1/6/9/15
and I think, cyrillic is not really nessesary.

Unfortunatly, curenly I am homeless and need a new Appartement,
which block me to continue my research and developments.

Greetings and happy new year...

I have tried the code above, but couldn't work it out.

since my keyborad is German I have also tried:

 #exportLANGUAGE=ar_DE.UTF8
 #export LC_MESSAGES=ar_DE.UTF8

This does not work, becasue there is no locale ar_DE.

And I know ony Keyboard Layouts of

german/arabic
german/farsi

french/arabic

english/arabic
english/farsi

Under X I have my own xmodemap for german/arabic/farsi but since sarge
I have the hell writing (or better hacking and learning) arabic/farsi.

THE HELL: Because I need arabic and farsi plus german urgently.

Hi Michelle,

 On the Console (VT) ?
While navigating my files using Konqueror or Konsole

This is, because the FileSystem does not support Bidi.
Then what should I do? I have installed
libfribidi-dev Development files for FreeBidi library
libfribidi0 Free Implementation of the Unicode BiDi algorithm

but still can't see arabic char's.

But anyway, do you have tried

   __( '/home/michelle.konzack/.bashrc'
 ) /

 | exportLANG=ar_MA.UTF8
 | exportLANGUAGE=ar_MA.UTF8
 | export LC_MESSAGES=ar_MA.UTF8

 \___
___

   __( '/home/michelle.konzack/.bash_profile'
 )__ /

 | echo Load Console Font and Keyboardlayout...
 | consolechars --font=LatArCyrHeb-16
When I executed this line the result was an error message:
set_kernel_font: Invalid argument
So I went to
and decompressed the file and used the command
#consolechars --font=/usr/share/consolefonts/LatArCyrHeb-16+.psf
but I got he same error message.

 | loadkeys --quiet -s michelle-euro-ar
I have tried with
/usr/share/rdesktop/keymaps/ar
expected filename between quotes
syntax error in map file

Also tried with
/usr/share/locale/ar/LC_MESSAGES/install-keymap.mo
syntax error in map file
 | unicode_start

 \___
___

(you schould use your own keymap, because I use a special one)
Can you send me a copy of your keymap so I can mimic it to my needs. I
guess without the keymap I can't use the script you gave me above.

If there is a howto that I can follow, I will save your efforts :-)
and thanks for the tips,

I am sorry, if my trials doesn't looks rational, but I wanted to get
this feature in my machine, and when I try to convince others to use
Linux, sometimes I am faced with the question Does it support
Arabic?

 Greetings
 Michelle

 As'salam alikom Mohammad,
Walekum assalam akhy Yaser,

To be able to read files/Folders with arabic names, you've to
change the value of isocharset in /etc/fstab.
the isocharset value is by default set to iso8859-1 and it is not
exist in /etc/fstab options. You have to add it set its value to
utf8. The following line shows you how to do that:
 /dev/hda1 /media/hda1 vfat
 umask=000,shortname=mixed,quiet,iocharset=utf8 0   0
This is true when I want to mount a windof file system to my Linux, but
anyway thanks for the tip.

There is also a useful document:
 http://www.arabeyes.org/download/documents/howto/arabic-howto-en/
I went to the documentation but it seams old OR I am a special case.
coz I have tried what is there, but did not help. For example, it sazs
that konsole work out of the box with arabic fonts, but that wasn't
the case.

From your email account, I deduced that you are in Germany, I am in
Heidelberg.

 As'salam alikom
