Interesting idea. I think that, quite independent from GSoC, it would be
very useful to keep project ideas as well as projects that are actively
being worked on documented somewhere (on the DocBook wiki, perhaps), if
only to display that there (still) is life in the DocBook project and
community. Sometimes it feels to me as if it has gone into maintenance
mode, with no or very little effort on development. To me, proposing
again to participate in GSoC is (also) an attempt to see whether that's
actually true or not.

Hi Richard,

About getting vouched by other organizations - The question related to this
in the application is,
Are you a new organization who has a Googler or other organization to
vouch for you? If so, please list their name(s) here

We are not a new organization, but since we got unlucky last year, I think
we should get another organization to vouch for us. MoinMoin is a good
candidate as I've told you before. [1] Thomas Waldmann was their Google
Summer of Code Organization Administrator in 2011, so may be you should
contact him first. His contact info. can be found at [2].

Can organizations outside of GSoC vouch? I couldn't find the documentation
by Google about the vouching process! Has OpenStack participated in GSoC
before? If so, that's also a very good addition. They already uses a
DocBook product that was developed as part of GSoC 2010 (Webhelp).

And, in case, I wasn't clear before, I was thinking to be a co-mentor this
year, because of limited knowledge about DocBook, I don't think I can
fulfill the needs a student. I was thinking of co-mentoring WebHelp, if
David is OK with it. :) David?

Re: [docbook-apps] Google Summer of Code 2012

2012-02-29 Thread Tobias Anstett (K15t Software)
Hi Kasun,

Our company developed a single source publishing core for the Confluence
wiki - one of its implementations supports docbook export but also docbook
import. The idea is that people leverage the collaborative and social
features when writing their technical documentation or e.g. books
(@sarahmaddox recently published a book at xmlpress using this approach -
http://ffeathers.wordpress.com/ - Richard could tell you more about it)

Of course the core can export to PDF, EPUB, Microsoft Word 2007/2010,
EclipseHelp and others also providing a kind of customization layer (called
templates) to reflect your layout. But docbook itself was still very
important for us because people should be able to leverage their existing
publication chain.

Cheers,
Tobias

[docbook-apps] Google Summer of Code communication

2010-05-14 Thread Dick Hamilton
I just spoke with one of the GSoC students, and we discussed
possibilities for email communication related to the GSoC projects.

Our conclusion was that the docbook apps mailing list was probably the
best place for us to hold all but private email conversations, because
this the mailing list seems to have the widest concentration of
interested and knowledgeable people. Our concern was that if we created
another list, members of the DocBook community would be out-of-the-loop
and it would be harder for students to get feedback.

I would not expect the volume to be large, and if the volume gets out of
hand, we can always move to another list. Of course, we would use the
docbook developers list for information that is appropriate for that
list (repository issues, etc.). But, I think it would be good for the
whole community to see what the students are doing and to have the
opportunity to comment and help as appropriate.

Therefore, I'd like to propose that we do that and ask the members of
this list to comment or express any concerns you have about the idea.

As many of you know, the DocBook project is participating in the Google
Summer of Code.

This message is to introduce the five selected projects to the DocBook
community. We received a lot of excellent proposals, and the ones we
chose are all strong proposals that should significantly broaden the
DocBook code base.

Please welcome the students to the project. Here are the five projects:

Project title Student Mentor
-
Web Help Output for Kasun Gajasinghe David Cramer
DocBook

Web Publishing using Sina Heshmati Stefan Seefeld
DocBook5

Create Transformation
of Docbook to epubAnn-Marie Horcher Dick Hamilton

Reimplementation of the Jirka Kosek Norman Walsh
DocBook XSL stylesheets
in XSLT 2.0

Integration of BoostBook Muhammad RehanStefan Seefeld
with DocBook Shaukat

In addition to our official mentors, we have several co-mentors, some
official and some un-official, including Hannes Magnusson for the Web
Publishing proposal, and Keith Fahlgren, Liza Daly, Adam Witwer, and
Sanders Kleinfeld for the epub proposal. Thanks to them and the mentors
for participating.

Given that the root element of a DocBook 5 file looks something like

Sure, DocBook 6 could do that. But such an endeavor is entirely out of
scope for the task I'm proposing here, or anything else related to this

At any rate, I would think it would be trivial to port a DB 5 document

programming language-specific elements at the top, and prefixing any
programming language-specific element names with the namespace
abbreviation.

But maybe I'm missing something...

Now that you are mentioning it, let me throw in some comments:

I have been watching with interest the transition from DB 4 to DB 5, and
in particular, the discussions about extensibility of a core
vocabulary. A long time ago we discussed DocBook's limited support for
programming language representations, and what to do about it. Norm
argued that DB was not a modeling language, and thus, that it wasn't a
good idea to add more elements akin to ooclass, methodsynopsis, etc.
to the core.

Well, I hope that as part of my project proposal
(http://docbook.xmlpress.net/tiki-index.php?page=api-markup), we can in
fact add more elements, but keep them in a separate namespace, so the
extension is better defined as such.

I would hope that other extensions (slides, website, etc.) could use a
similar approach, i.e. all become domain-specific extensions (or
profiles). This has a couple of important advantages, not the least
that users are free to mix these vocabularies for their own purpose.

Thoughts ?

Stefan

I come to this discussion as a DocBook user, but don't have any
background on why DB got to where it is today. Our use case is probably
different from anyone else's: we're doing grammars of natural languages
(Bengali, Urdu, Pashto...), so we have some grammar-specific extensions
in their own name space. We also use the literate programming extension
that Norm wrote some years ago, so that we can automatically turn our
grammars into parsers.

That said--

My sense (which I guess I've voiced a couple times) is that there is
already an awfully lot (too much, IMO) about DB that is specific to
programming languages. Our localization has over 200 lines like

   define name=db.classsynopsisnotAllowed//define
My guess is that if you were to add programming elements in a separate
namespace, you would want to move all the existing programming-specific
elements into that namespace too. I think the result would be a very
much more modular DocBook, rather like a modern programming language
(Python, say) in which the generic stuff is in the main language, and
constructs that deal with particular domains are in library modules.

In case it's not clear, I'm entirely for such modularization.

will also be working on the page over the next few days.

IMPORTANT NOTE: There needs to be a backup administrator who has a
google account, and I need to include information about that
administrator in the application. If you are able to act as the backup
administrator, please let me know right way (rlhamil...@frii.com). If we
can't find a backup, we can't participate.

Best Regards,
Dick Hamilton
