[libreoffice-documentation] Where’s Jean

2019-11-25 Thread Jean Weber
In an earlier note, I mentioned getting home on 15 December. In case you’re
interested in where I am, today and tomorrow I’m in Ushuaia, Argentina. No,
I’m not on my way to or from Antarctica this time. I came down from Buenos
Aires on a ship, and will be continuing up the coast of Chile to
Valparaiso, the port city of Santiago. Hoping for no dramas getting from
the port to Santiago Airport and then home to Australia. It’s been over 50
years since I blundered into a demonstration/revolution in a foreign
country and I can do without a repeat of the experience. 

Hi, Jean (& Olivier),

Olivier made a master document for GS60 that is useful for automatically
creating a full guide from chapter files, maybe this can be also done for
Calc60guide?

[libreoffice-documentation] Base Handbook

2019-11-25 Thread Dan Lewis
I have just finished translating all of the text documents for this
user guide. I had allowed myself to stop work on this project because
the way I wanted to do it became too complicated and confusing as is
trying to do too many things at one time.

Next to be done is to edit all 13 documents one at a time. While
doing this, I will also make changes in the example databases as my
editing takes me to where each database is discussed. Some of the
terminology that I will be using is that is in use in the US. I also
plan to replace people's names so that they are American. I hope to get
this done by the end of the year. Since I will not be celebrating
anything in December either, I should be able to get this done. The only
thing that may prevent this is my having to learn things about Base that
I did even know is possible. (I have yet to study a book on macros that
made any sense to me.)

Last month, my tower started quitting after only a few minutes, so I
bought a new laptop. Well, I got it about 11 years ago. So, I should be
able to be on the next meeting on December 4 a 1 PM (-0500).

I am not ready to upload any of these files until I have made this first
edit. Perhaps I should also make some suggestions as to what the Guide
Status is for this should look like. I know it should contain all of the
text documents, the example databases, and other examples files. But
what about the procedures that occur even before the translation
begins?Examples are creating clean files, replacing Caution/Note/Tip,
and change the style names from German to English.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Next project after Calc Guide

2019-11-25 Thread Steve Fanning

Jean,

From a new user's perspective, I would expect the Getting Started Guide to
be the first book consulted. It is therefore important that this book is
up-to-date and accurate. Hence I would vote for another update to GS.

Steve

What book should we work on after the Calc Guide? Getting Started with
LO6.4, or something else?

While working on the Calc Guide, I found a lot of errors in the current GS
that will need to be fixed along with updates. Many of the errors are out
of date info that wasn’t removed or updated. Our QA on the docs hasn’t been
as thorough as it should be. (I let a lot of errors slip by in the Writer
Guide, too.)

Yo, team! You may recall my suggestion 2-3 weeks ago that we leave the
proposed two new chapters out of the book we’re working on, so we don’t
hold up publication any longer than necessary. I don’t recall seeing any
disagreement, or indeed much response at all, so I’m taking the standard
open-source attitude of moving ahead with the idea. (And glad to see work
continues on other chapters.)

Now I have a further proposal: I will be back home in 3 weeks (15
December), when I will do a final edit of all the chapters and publish the
book in PDF. That means: whatever state the chapters are in at that time.
If further updates are needed, it’s not difficult to do so and regenerate a
PDF.

(Note: I don’t participate in Christmas or other end-of-year festivities,

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Next project after Calc Guide

2019-11-25 Thread Martin Srebotnjak
Hi,

the GS was last updated with LO6.0 and since this is the main general guide
for LO, I think it is worth of regular updates. It is also the most
translated of the guides and thus an always updated version could trigger
even more localizations.

Since GS60 update was quite thorough I believe the update to 6.4 could be
driven by a few expert writers like Jean quite smoothly.

Another team of writers could give their love to the Impress guide that
probably needs a full rewrite covering new features, GUI options/versions
and screenshots. But probably it would be wise to finish the Calc update
first.
