Re: [libreoffice-documentation] MacOS info for all books

2022-01-26 Thread Jean Weber
Steve,
Thank you! I don’t remember why I used the link I did. I agree your
suggestion is much better, and I’ll change it in the v7.3 drafts.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Re: Base BG7302 - Chapter 2 - First Review

2022-01-26 Thread flywire
I reported Bug 144588 Base ODBC connection for Sqlite Inadequately
Documented (https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=144588) and
the first response was to consider contributing to the documentation. I
documented it in the bug, provided a wiki entry, and draft content for the
V7.3 guide. The process is very simple but I don't think the documentation
would get a user through it. I hope it will at least get considered.

It has been pointed out SQLite is only one example of an ODBC connection.
Fair enough the draft might need changing. Try following the documentation
to use it. Anyone.

A bigger issue is trying to follow a changed process that has evolved over
a decade using a primitive mailling list without current documentation.

Regards

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base v7.3: Chapter 1 - BG7301

2022-01-26 Thread Steve Fanning

Hello everybody,

I have updated Chapter 1 to address the additional comments raised and,
assuming that it has had sufficient reviewing now, have placed the
updated file in the Published folder.

Regards,

Steve

Hello everybody.

Many thanks to Dev, Robert, and Flywire for providing helpful comments
on draft Chapter 1 of the 7.3 Base Guide.

I have considered all comments and produced an updated version of the
document, which can be found in NextCloud. Changes to address all
agreed comments have been made with track changes on. Please note
however that the images for Figures 19, 53, 57, 81, 85 have been
replaced but these modifications don’t appear to be recognized as
tracked changes.

It would be very helpful if Dev, Robert, and Flywire could check this
updated version to see if they are happy with the changes. Can I
suggest that we discuss any residual issues in this email list rather
than editing the document further? I can then update it again if
required.

My current thoughts are that this chapter has now had a good review by
multiple people, and it probably isn’t worth a formal 2nd review
cycle. Does anybody disagree?

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base v7.3: Chapter 1 - BG7301

2022-01-26 Thread Steve Fanning

Thanks for the comments.

I have (hopefully) clarified the text for your first suggestion.

I haven't made a change for this second point. The three database
systems currently in the brief list on this page are those for which we
have a direct connection route (as described in Chapter 2). As I
understand it Base does not offer a direct connection to SQLite but
connections are via ODBC - this is covered by the paragraph after the
bullet points mentioned.

Steve

Two quick comments:

1. p4 Database Creation: New embedded HSQLDB databases can be created
using the built-in database engine. (An embedded database engine doesn't
imply an embedded database, needs to be contrasted with an external
database.)
2. p6 add sqlite ??

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] MacOS info for all books

2022-01-26 Thread Steve Fanning

Hi Jean,

I have updated Chapter 1 of the Base Guide accordingly.

However, I have a built-in dislike of web addresses like this that
include the version number of the software to be downloaded. What
happens when versions 18, 19, 20, ... come along. Will we have to update
the text of the guides each time?

Can I offer the following alternative text, which seems to side-step
this potential irritation?

 * "For macOS, you need to install Oracle’s Java Development Kit (JDK),
not just the JRE. Download links can be found by selecting the macOS
   option at: https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/downloads/.";

I've used this revised text in the Base Guide but can change again if
anybody has other ideas.

Regards,

Steve

Here is the latest info for macOS regarding JRE. Previous versions of
GS and WG had info that is now out of date, and Base doesn't seem to
have anything about macOS; I don't remember which of the other books
mention this.

For macOS, you need to install Oracle’s Java Development Kit (JDK),
not just the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Download links can be

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] 7.3 Base Guide - updates to Chapter 10 and Appendices A & B

Hello Steve

I'm taking Appendix B for review.

I'll return on Monday 31st or sooner.

Hello everybody,

I have placed three updated files in the relevant NextCloud folder:

  * BG7310-DatabaseMaintenance_SF_26Jan2022.odt
  * BG7311-AppendixA-CommonDatabaseTasks_SF_26Jan2022.odt
  * BG7312-AppendixB-CompareHSQLDBAndFirebird_SF_26Jan2022

These three files are now in the 7.3 template, include captions for
figures and tables, and have a little less negativity in the text (e.g.,
less use of the word "unfortunately"; etc).

With regards to Appendix B, I had to implement the modifications with
track changes off - I tried to use track changes but it proved
impossible due to the re-structuring of tables that was needed. The
files for Chapter 10 and Appendix A were updated with track changes on.

None of these three are scheduled for significant updates at this issue.
Please could somebody review the figure / table captions, and any other
tracked changes to make sure I haven’t done anything stupid?

Regards,

Steve
