It now says that all themes can be modified, i.e. all of them have green icons. This is true only if one runs LO with administration rights. I've tested this on Linux and W7 - in both cases one normally sees all icons in red. On XP a user must be administrator to modify them, too. I recommend to return to the old wording and eventually add a comment about the possibility to modify the themes in administration mode (if there is a reason to do that). John Smith made those changes, not Hazel. He is on holidays at the moment, but I can return the file to the old wording. Thanks, Milos. I've been looking at this on my Mac, where I can add images to any theme (though the icons are brown, not red or green), delete images from any theme, etc. I'm not running LO as administrator, but I did install it for use by anyone on the computer. I'm not sure how best to deal with this: perhaps add a note to say that it depends on the installation? Or just remove the sentences You can add images to any theme and You can delete any theme from the Gallery? I will test a bit more. Would also be useful if others reading this could do a bit of testing. Or can you reference something on the wiki or bugzilla about this? --Jean -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: documentation+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/documentation/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
[libreoffice-documentation] WG Chapter 10, Templates in Writer
Hi This chapter has been uploaded to ODF into the WG Drafts4.2 folder. Hi Jean, welcome back. Because of a bug in the Wizards in Writer not permitting Letter, Fax or Agenda to be created (reported as Fixed for V4.3) I'm unable to verify the Wizards section in the chapter and have left the text as it was for the V4.0 guide. There was also mention some time previously about opening a document after the Template has been changed, and the macro that is run in order to bring up the update styles dialogue if it had been declined previously, no longer working. This has been checked and is still a valid protocol. I've commented it in the chapter. [libreoffice-documentation] GS Chapter 11, Graphics, Gallery and Fontwork
Hi Jean I know this chapter has been published, but I had cause to refer back to it and have come across a number of issues with both the text and also associated graphics. I have fully commented my issues in the chapter. I have uploaded this chapter to ODF into the GS Drafts4.2 folder. The graphics are done on a different system to mine so I made no attempt to replace them in this chapter. Unfortunately I started dealing with this with Track Changes off before I realised, so I've commented the changes made prior to turning it on. Re: [libreoffice-documentation] GS4205 Calc
Hi again. I've had an almost instant resolution to this bug report from Eike Rathke, who I believe is one of the chief developers with regards to Calc. He responds; Applying a cell format NEVER changes existing cell content. On purpose. He classes it as 'Resolved' and 'Not A Bug'. So here's the quandary, if it's doing it on your system, then it appears to be a bug related to your OS. It's possible I may not have phrased the bug report too well and it's been misunderstood, even though I included a spreadsheet attachment with the report illustrating what was happening. So I don't think this is likely to be the case. Would you mind having a look at the bug report 77025 and see what you think? If I've not screwed it up and the behaviour is as described by you in the comment reply in the chapter, would you mind raising a bug report yourself? I hate to let these things just slide. Regards JohnS On 03/04/2014 19:47, John Smith wrote: Hi Martin Just had another look at this chapter out of curiosity and I see you've replied to a comment I left, regarding a cell's content changing immediately when the formatting is changed, from say, a number to text. Would you redo the text in the guide to reflect what you're getting instead of the text I wrote there? I'll raise a bug report for this and submit it. Thanks. Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Ch1-4 of GS4.2 published
Hi Milos Firstly of course, the extension as to be installed in your particular system. The 'English spelling dictionaries ...' is installed by default in the English language versions of LibO. Check in 'Tools - Extension Manager' to see if it's there. If it is, click on it and then click on the 'Options' button to bring up the dialogue where you can set these extra checks to be done in the grammar checker. I have no idea why this extension is used in preference to any other, that's a question you would have to ask on the Developer's mailing list :). Duplicate word finding works ok on my system. Not all the options selectable work however, but that's for the bug-fixers to deal with. The bug report was made on the 17th Feb and appears to be still awaiting triage. However, the checker either does not work at all, or it is disabled in my LO and I do not know how to switch it on. I've even read Chapter 4, to find out :(. In fact I first thought that the opposite was right, since all replicated words were always underlined by a blue wavy line. Only later I've realized that these were detected by the Languagetool grammar checker, I've installed earlier. Btw, do you know why lightproof was included by default in LO and not Languagetool? The second has a very active community and is supported for many languages. One can install it as an extension, but still I do not understand the decision. best Milos Regards JohnS On 31/03/2014 09:50, Milos Sramek wrote: Dňa 29.03.2014 07:42, Jean Weber wrote / napísal(a): I have published chapters 1 through 4 of Getting Started with LO 4.2. [libreoffice-documentation] Template manager
Hi all. In one of the latest user guides is a screen-shot of the Template Manager, taken from a Mac I think, showing a Repository button (File New Templates, or whatever route you wish to use to open it). This button does not exist on my Win XP system in LO release 4.2.3.1. Would someone check to see if this button still exists in other OSes than XP please? It's either gone now or a bug. If it's gone I can rewrite, else I'll file a bug. Thanks. Re: [libreoffice-documentation] WG Chapter 5; PrintingExportingEmailing
Yes I do Jean, thanks. I think the Sidebar is going to increase in importance as LibO evolves and I want to cover as much as I can in anticipation of this. I'm going to put as much introductory information as I can into 'WG Ch1', and begin stitching it into all the explanations throughout the chapters. I'll finish 'WG Ch1' first and then go back to 'GS Ch4-Getting started with Writer' and do some more edits. After that I'll look at the other GS guides relevant to Writer and do the same there. Can you say whether they're there by intention and ought to be left, or whether they can go? Many chapters contain styles that are not in the template and often are not even in use in the chapter. IMO they can all be purged and, if in use, replaced with our standard styles. I haven't been too concerned about them because we keep planning to have a whole new template, but so far that keeps getting stalled so it's probably a good idea to clean up the chapters as we go. [libreoffice-documentation] Getting Started chapter 2; Setting up LO
Hi Jean. I've placed this chapter into the GS Drafts 4.2 folder on ODF. I've responded to comments you left and carried out some further edits - thanks to Clayton for pointing me in the right direction. I noticed in this chapter, the task bar indicated 'Multiple Languages', and in the 'Styles and Formatting' window there were a lot of unrecognised (by me) character styles. I did a copy/paste into a new template to clear these out and revert the language back to 'English(USA)' for the document as a by-product. Further to this, I've just downloaded the GS Styles and Templates chapter to have a look at it ( I see the chapter was booked out by BB on the 14th Feb, and so I won't do anything to it) and I can see once again, many other styles not in the template. Re: [libreoffice-documentation] GS Guide Chapter 4, Getting started with Writer
Hi Milos The problems I came across, and I went no further than checking these, lie with the numbering and the list styles. For example, if you care to look at, say Chapter 9 picked at random, and select the OOoNum 123 Start style, you will see that on the 'Outline and Numbering' tab, 'Numbering' has been set incorrectly to 'None'. On the 'Indents Spacing' tab, you will see the 'Before text:' and 'First line:' values have been incorrectly set to zero. This applies to the whole family of OOoNum styles and to the OOoList family of styles too. As I said, I have checked no other styles as I then adopted my copy/paste routine to get on with the work. I hope you find this information useful and good luck with what you're doing. Regards JohnS On 03/02/2014 21:18, Milos Sramek wrote: Dear John, please, let me know where does the problem reside. Re: [libreoffice-documentation] GS Guide Chapter 4, Getting started with Writer
Hi Gary Happily for me, disappearing graphics have not been a problem for a long time now. With respect to the Writer guides, Milos has done some work and 'cleaned' them using some software routines. Unfortunately there appears to be some random changes made to some of the custom styles we use (not the coloured backgrounds to styles that are in the 'cleaned' files, but others). I have adopted the routine for Writer of copying and pasting content from the 'clean' files into a new v3_4 template in order to reset all the styles that have the same names, to those in the template. I am going to keep multiple copies for the time being. My earlier problem was with v4.2.0.3 and now we're into v4.2.0.4 I'm hoping it will be trouble free. Time will tell. Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Adding definitions to description of statistical functions in Calc
Hi Silas The Docs team are responsible for producing the User Guides. I guess the information you are requesting *could *be added to the relevant chapter in the Calc guide *if* it was thought necessary to enhance the understanding of users. That's not a decision in which I have an input. The Help files and their index is not part of the documentation team's remit. I don't know who deals with that I'm afraid. The Insert Function dialogue is part of the programme UI and is dealt with by the Development group. I believe, though I've never done it, that you have to request a programme enhancement through the Bugzilla system if you want something added like you have described. Yet when I click on the hotspot in a Calc spreadsheet, the hotspot does not open my browser as it is supposed to do. I have tried this in Ubuntu and Mac OS. However, I have created the same hotspot in Impress, using the same graphic and web address and it works perfectly. This to me indicates a problem with Calc and image mapping. Now you can see why I need a little help. Re: [libreoffice-documentation] CONVERT function in Calc
Thanks Shelagh and Steve. CONVERT_ADD is the next function in the Function Wizard list, and I hadn't yet reached that one. It looks, from reading the Help files, as if that one supersedes CONVERT as the function to use for converting units. I don't know why the function has been left in. In the Help, it says; The functions whose names end with _ADD return the same results as the corresponding Microsoft Excel functions. But, does opening a Calc spreadsheet containing CONVERT_ADD, in Excel, cause an error? Because I can't get CONVERT to work I think I may raise a bug. Re: [libreoffice-documentation] CONVERT function in Calc
Hi Tom That's another route to go. I'll give it a go. Hope I can do it without signing up to that list. Hi Jean, it may well be the reason that it's still there. Makes doing the docs a real time-consuming pain though. As a by-the-by, the location for the two new functions AVERAGEIF and AVERAGEIFS is in the Mathematical category on the Function Wizard. The other AVERAGE, AVEDEV and AVERAGEA functions are in the Statistical category. In Excel all these functions are in the Statistical category. As the first two are new functions I'm wondering if they have been wrongly located? How do we ask that question, and to whom? I'm going to ignore it in the docs and write it as I find it, maybe it'll get changed later. Feedback from reporting the Function Wizard bug crashing LO is that it will be fixed for 4.1.3. I'll keep an eye on it and remove the Caution from Calc chapter 7 when it's done. [libreoffice-documentation] CONVERT function in Calc
Hi all. I'm working on the Appendix B chapter for Calc and I am looking at the =CONVERT function. This function converts a numerical value from one unit of measure, to another unit of measure in the same group, for example feet into yards, both in the distance group. Within the dialogue of the Function Wizard is a statement Converts a value according to a conversion table in the configuration (main.xcd). My question is basically a two parter; is this list available to a user, and if so how do you access it? and because the two parameters in the function for units are both case sensitive and entered inside quotes, how do you find what the valid entries are for these parameters? The syntax is CONVERT(Number, text, text) where text is the unit of conversion. I have tried a few of the entries which I found here; http://docs.oasis-open.org/office/v1.2/cs01/OpenDocument-v1.2-cs01-part2.html#CONVERT such as lbm and stone for mass, pt and qt for volume and ft and in for distance, without success. Pulling my hair out here:-) . Please help. Regards from Tom :) Ditto here with disappearing graphics in version 4 (now at version 4.0.3.1 on my Windows 7 system), especially those pictures anchored as characters. Personally, I anchor graphics as characters only when adding small graphics inline (such as tiny graphics embedded within a line of text)--likely the major intended purpose of anchoring graphics in that manner. There was some advice in the ODFAuthors guides to anchor pictures in figures as characters; however, I have rewritten those instructions whenever I encounter them in my version 4.x revisions of the Writer-Guide chapters. On another matter, is anybody currently reviewing the Writer-Guide chapter on master documents? In my ongoing revisions of chapters and template redesign (based upon the ODFAuthored published chapters), I am devising a general-purpose master document/template and accompanying tutorials--starting from the master document, template, and page/section considerations and working down to the specifics of their components (text, figures, and tables, among others). I started into revising the only current published master-document chapter at ODFAuthors , the 3.6 version. Perhaps, somebody is working on the version 4 chapter, so that I could then hold my criticism of the version 3.6 version and apply it to the version 4 chapter, if necessary. [libreoffice-documentation] Re: Templates and out of date help
Hi Peter No bugs have been raised by me about this. If you don't have the two posts from Alex Thurgood on your computer still, from the 15th January you can find them on Nabble. In a nutshell, he asserts that A), the devs are still dealing with Template Manager, and that B), the Help files are obsolete. There has been some discussion on the list about the Help system. On 22/02/2013 08:10, Peter Schofield wrote: Hello John I am upgrading the Impress template chapter to 4.0 and have come across one little problem. The LO help on templates is still referring to the old system of template management from LO3.6 and not the new template manager in LO4.0. Have you raised this with the help team or submitted a bug report? Jean suggested I contact you about this. I am using your GS chapter 3 on templates as a base for the Impress template chapter so that the two chapters have similar instructions. Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Draft LO 4.0 Chapter 4 - Getting started with Writer
Hi Tim The thing I usually do is select the file and then in the Actions menu item, select Check out. This locks the file, creates another copy in the folder, and you take away a copy to work on. Have 'Record changes' enabled when you open the document on your system to work on it, change what you think needs changing, or make suggestions, leaving comments (Ctrl+Alt+C) giving your reasons. Save the file on your system and change the filename by adding an underscore, your initials, an underscore and alter the date. So Title_JAS_TL_01Feb13. The date I do this way because I hate those long strings of numbers which are messy and differ country to country. When you're done, go back to ODF, select the checked out copy in the folder and then in the Actions menu, select Check in. Go to the Feedback folder, select 'Add new' and 'File' and upload your commented file. Once it's uploaded, go to the Draft LO 4.0 folder and delete the file from there. Inform the list you've uploaded a particular file. This may not be 'by the book' but it's what I've been doing, and works. Regards JohnS On 03/02/2013 05:01, Tim Lloyd wrote: Hi, I downloaded the writer guide from the ODF website but I could not see any obvious way to set status to locked. Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Menu path on a Mac
Thanks Jean and Peter for replying. Peter makes a further comment; There is a statement in the Preface about using LibreOffice dialogs for opening, saving and printing. However, printing is only for Linux and Mac OSX. Windows version LO 4.0 does not have LO printing dialogs. I've revisited Preface and will use the same amended text that's used there in my relevant chapter. It now removes the confusion a Windows-only reader could have. As a final question on this, what is the full menu path used to get to ... Preferences General? Is it in Tools Options LibreOffice Preferences ...? I'd like to put it in full in the document.
