Symlink for resolv.conf is wrong on fresh install

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Hello. Sorry for disturb, may I ask you please to confirm if im not doing
anything wrong with new installation?
Its being a while since the problem exists AT LEAST IN MY CASE with "faulty
path" for symlinc at resolv.conf
I believe its keep happening since 18.04 version and even now in 22.04
So, in the fresh install the path looks like this:
  lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 39 Feb 17  2023 resolv.conf ->
../run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf

  but once im running :
  sudo ln -sf /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

everything works fine. By everything I mean when I run nslookup.

  Regards,

  Vitalii Sharapov

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 2019045] Re: [snap] New Ubuntu font with normal weight displayed as bold in Google Docs in Chromium after upgrading to Lunar

2023-10-24 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I doubt this is relevant — it was long ago and before any snap was used
by default — but I recall that when we started to use Noto fonts for CJK
languages in Xenial, there was initially an issue in Chrome/Chromium
where it used the wrong weight if the font file included multiple
weights (bug #157). The Debian/Ubuntu resolution to that issue was
to switch to another font packaging model, where one font file per
weight was used.

We also reported it as a font issue, but that didn't lead to anything:
https://github.com/notofonts/noto-cjk/issues/65

This Ubuntu font issue is also about Chromium and font files with
multiple weights...

Title:
[snap] New Ubuntu font with normal weight displayed as bold in Google
Docs in Chromium after upgrading to Lunar

Status in chromium-browser package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in fonts-ubuntu package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I am experiencing a rendering regression after upgrading from Kinetic to
Lunar.
Google Docs using the Ubuntu font family are displayed incorrectly in
Chromium: the normal weight font is rendered identically to the bold weight
one, instead of being thicker than light and thinner than medium.

Printing is also affected, unless I use Google Docs' download to PDF
function, although that probably triggers a server-side rendering.

This issue does not occur in Firefox or Google Chrome.

One thing that may be relevant: if I force-refresh my test Google Doc
I see all four Ubuntu font lines initially being rendered as bold. The
light and medium lines are then re-rendered with the correct weight.
It's as if bold was the default weight and the normal variant
  disappeared.

As far as I can tell I was already running Chromium 112.0.5615.49 in
Kinetic, and with Chromium being a snap I don't quite understand why
  the Ubuntu series would matter.

I have also tried version 114.0.5735.16 (in latest/beta at the
  moment); the symptoms are identical.

The attachments show the rendering error.

I'm currently on 22.04, and I see a button whose label is "Clear"
(admittedly not "Clear List") at the bottom of the window to the right
of the "Do Not Disturb" switch. Do you see the same?

If you hover a notification, a 'X' button shows up at the top right, and
you can click it to clear that particular notification. Or click the
"Clear" button to clear them all.

TBH I'm not enough familiar with the feature to tell.

But please note that the feature is a GNOME one, and if you would like
to suggest improvements to it, I would recommend that you submit a
wishlist issue here:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues

Ubuntu is a distribution which uses GNOME, and changing the behavior of
the notification feature is not likely to happen on the distro level.

This bug is about this page

  https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/shell-notifications.html.en

under the heading "The notification list", and specifically the text
"Click the Clear List button to empty the list of notifications."

From the text of the page I infer that "clear list" button would
somehow be visible if I press Super+V or possibly click on a
notification after I press Super+V. In 23.04 there is no "Clear List"
button in either of those places. So that very specifically seems
  wrong.

More generally the concern here is that I can't find functionality to
clear either one notification or all of them. They just seem to pile
up. Normal OS functionality in 2023 is to distinguish between
"notifications the user has dismissed" and "notifications the user
still needs to deal with" and I don't see that in Ubuntu. I can't tell
if I'm missing something, or Ubuntu is just missing that
functionality. I would hope the "Notifications and the notification
list" page would inform me more on which is the case.

Thanks Steve and Zixing Liu! Want to mention that the translators were

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-

But I suppose that it won't make a difference if some translators attend
to it before some search/replace operation. In such cases there will
simply not be anything to replace...

2023-09-26 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Sebastien: I hope I haven't misunderstood it. But we have docs saying
e.g. "Click on the Ubuntu Software icon in the dock...", and we refer to
the application as "Ubuntu Software" so the name of the thing has been
Ubuntu Software all since Mark(?) made that decision around final freeze
for 16.04 (bug #1570479).

And now the "thing" will be called App Center instead, if I understand
it correctly.

This late change also affects documentation, and let me make it very
clear: This kind of change in the documentation is anything but
"trivial" for translators, since the name of the thing is often embedded
in long strings (aka paragraphs).

It has been discussed at discourse for several weeks, and waiting with
the decision so long indicates poor planning and a lack of consideration
towards the volunteers who help with translation.

  Hi,

As I usually do, I tried to change the font for interface, as I much
prefer « condensed » fonts rather than large, round, regular ones.

In 20.04 or 22.04 or 22.10 gnome-tweaks allowed to do that.

Today in 23.04, it only changes font in gnome-shell ( top panel,
activities and app's views ) but not in other app's, not in the whole
interface as it used to do.

In dconf-editor I did not find entries regarding « global » interface

  Is this intended behavior ?

Ability to change font type and size is also a matter of
  accessibility.

That statement is too sweeping to be useful in a bug report.

The observations which mrvanes brought up have been sorted, and the
additional aspects added by you do not stand on their own. I think you
need to explain more precisely the nature of the issues you see.

I would suggest that you pick one application, submit a bug against that
application (probably upstream), and show in considerable detail how the
current rendering of a specific font in that application differs from
what you would expect. Doing so might help to narrow down the problem.

2023-05-04 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your follow-up, mrvanes. I didn't even know that there are
two fonts-liberation variants.

Hmm.. I see that both fonts-liberation and fonts-liberation2 are
installed by default on standard Ubuntu (both 22.04 and 23.04), which
explains why I wasn't able to confirm any regression with respect to
Liberation Sans when testing on Ubuntu. Can't help wondering if it makes
sense to install both.

Maybe we should replace fonts-liberation with fonts-liberation2 here:

https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu-
seeds/+git/platform/tree/desktop-common#n95

Any thoughts on that @mrvanes and @Sebastien?

That sounds plausible. Thanks!

Well, the discussion at this bug report has indeed mentioned quite a few
other font rendering aspects. We would need a font expert to sort it.

But as regards the fonts-ubuntu bug task we *might* now have the answer,
i.e. not a bug.

@mrvanes: What do you think? Do we have a reasonable explanation with
respect to fonts-ubuntu and hinting? If not, you may want to chime in at
the upstream issue which Sebastien pointed at.

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 2017573] Re: Font hinting broken on 23.04

2023-05-02 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Sebastien: But yes, it might be related to the new variable font. This
shows the result of my test:

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/663331455/hinting-test_fonts-ubuntu.png

So the new fonts-ubuntu (where hinting does not make a difference) looks
rather similar to the old fonts-ubuntu with full hinting.

So what I'm wondering is if the new fonts-ubuntu disregards the font
hinting value intentionally or if it is a bug.

Already did that. The wording of comment #37 was based on such a test,
and the issue is not present if you downgrade to the old fonts-ubuntu

The latest significant change to libfreetype6 happened in 22.10, so I
think you need to downgrade to the version shipped by 22.04 to possibly
notice a difference.

2023-04-30 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@mgiammarco: I'm not a font expert, so this discussion is a bit over my
head, I think. Nevertheless I miss some basic information which I
believe is necessary to understand the nature of your observation:

* Which are your effective fontconfig settings?
* Which font(s) are not rendered as you would expect?

As regards the default RGB settings, they were changed in 23.04 in all
other flavors but Kubuntu. Kubuntu already had the symlink

/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-sub-pixel-rgb.conf

by default, while other flavors had no sub-pixel rule. In 23.04 10-sub-
pixel-rgb.conf is default in all flavors.

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 2017573] Re: Font hinting broken on 23.04

2023-04-28 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Sebastien: One open issue from the discussion above is that the new
Ubuntu font (fonts-ubuntu 0.863-0ubuntu3) does not honor the fonts
hinting value set in Tweaks or directly via an equivalent fontconfig
.conf file. fonts-ubuntu 0.83-6ubuntu1 does respect fonts hinting.

Do you know whether the new behavior is by design or should be
considered a bug?

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 2017573] Re: Font hinting broken on 23.04

2023-04-27 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Ok. The thought I had was that the Kubuntu fonts dialog may not reflect
the actual rendering 100% correctly. I'm not claiming that's the case,
but I feel there is such a risk.

Anyway, I'm going to seek help to find out whether the changed behavior
of the Ubuntu font is by design, or if it is a bug. As regards other
fonts which more or less seem to ignore the fonts hinting value, I don't
know right now. As regards Liberation Sans I couldn't confirm a
regression.

Myself normally uses the defaults with respect to hinting and
antialiasing, and that works ok for me. When accomplishing some tests
with antialiasing disabled, I couldn't help wondering what the point is
with doing so.

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 2017573] Re: Font hinting broken on 23.04

2023-04-27 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Yes, Liberation Sans was last built on Ubuntu 3+ years ago before the
20.04 release, so we know that it's the very same font in the various
releases.

May I ask: Did you draw conclusions from the preview field in the fonts
selection window only, or did you continue and saw the different
alternatives in a real-world context, so to speak?

When I tested on Ubuntu I actually made the fonts changes in Tweaks.
Then I opened GNOME's Settings menu (Settings is one of the tools which
query the related dconf values), took a screenshot of a specific string
there, and used Gimp to scale it up to 600%.

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 2017573] Re: Font hinting broken on Plasma 23.04

2023-04-27 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@mrvanes: I tested with Liberation Sans and Verdana on Ubuntu with
GNOME. My notes:

* I can confirm that Verdana honors the font hinting, both on 23.04 and
22.04.

* I can confirm that Liberation Sans ignores the font hinting on 23.04.
However, I see the very same behavior on 22.04. The difference in
rendering between no hinting and full hinting is very small. Please see
the attached picture.

So the only regression I see is the changed behavior related to the
upgrade of the Ubuntu font.

It appears to me — as you already have indicated — as if only some fonts
honor the font hinting value. But my observations indicate that that is
by design. Maybe the default font configuration — antialiasing enabled
and only slight hinting — is there for a reason.

I'm no longer sure that we have a bug here. :/

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 2017573] Re: Font hinting broken on Plasma 23.04

2023-04-27 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@mrvanes: You missed one aspect of my observations for the Ubuntu font.

* On Ubuntu 22.04 font hinting works to start with. If I upgrade to the
fonts-ubuntu 0.863-0ubuntu3 package there, the rendering happens
irrespective of the font hinting value.

* On Ubuntu 23.04 font hinting is broken to start with. If I downgrade
to the fonts-ubuntu 0.83-6ubuntu1 package there, the rendering honors
the font hinting value.

So the regression, at least for this particular font, seems to be
unrelated to other packages.

@Dmitriy: The above indicates that the upgrade of fontconfig is not part
of the picture.

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 2017573] Re: Font hinting broken on Plasma 23.04

2023-04-26 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for being picky.

I did a more thorough test on Ubuntu (with GNOME). I focused on the
Ubuntu font, disabled antialiasing, tested with hining "none" respective
"full", and studied the rendering of a particular string in GNOME's
Settings menu.

Conclusion: fonts-ubuntu 0.863 — unlike fonts-ubuntu 0.83 — ignores the
font hinting value. That's true both in the 23.04 and the 22.04
environment (with different versions of fontconfig). So, as regards the
Ubuntu font, the problem seems to be with the font itself.

And yes, the problem is apparently not Kubuntu specific.

Now, the Ubuntu font underwent a big redesign in the 23.04 development
cycle. If you look at the attached picture, you see that the new fonts-
ubuntu (which ignores the fonts hinting) looks rather similar to the old
fonts-ubuntu with full hinting. I can't help wondering if hinting
possibly is built-in in the new fonts-ubuntu, and that it has
intentionally been detached from the configured hinting value. If not,
we have identified a fonts-ubuntu bug. And that would be a regression.

As regards other fonts but Ubuntu, where you have found that font
hinting is ignored when rendering: Have you confirmed that font hinting
was respected in e.g. Kubuntu 22.04 for those fonts? (Asking because I
have not yet looked closer at any other fonts myself.)

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 1754804] Re: "fonts-ubuntu" package is marked as non-free

2023-03-22 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Well, if Canonical had agreed on fonts-ubuntu being non-free, it would
have been sorted in the restricted pocket of the Ubuntu archive. But
it's not. It's in main, i.e. the Canonical supported free software.

I can agree that 100% clarity would have been better, but we are not
there. The change made as a "fix" of this bug was a pragmatic step to
address the situation described above.

This behavior seems to have started after a recent update to Ubuntu

I realize that the argument can be made the new behavior is more technically

helpful

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 1973474] Re: Rename "Pin to Dash" to "Pin to Dock"

2022-05-17 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Daniel:

If you don't agree, what would you prefer? I have already mentioned two
suggestions to address the inconsistency.

On 2022-05-17 05:03, Daniel van Vugt wrote:
> * Regular users are less likely to understand "pinned" as much as
> "favourites".

This is not about "Pinned" vs. "Favorites". It's about "Pin/Pinned" vs.
"Add/Added" and "Dash" vs. "Dock".

My (latest) idea is to accept "Pin to Dock" as a minimum change given
the current code. Another possible solution would be to keep the 22.04
solution, i.e. use the original Ubuntu terms all over also going
forward.

> * Power users may have no dock, only a dash, and so the existing
> wording is correct.

Yes, for those who choose a GNOME session. My concern is the Ubuntu
sessions.

* It's a patch we would have to maintain.

Something should be done. Getting rid of the the inconsistent
terminology, in one way or another, is not a wishlist request. The
inconsistency is a bug, which gets extra obvious when you deal with docs
and translations.

Hmm.. Using "Pin to Dock" (via a gnome-shell patch I suppose) may be
better. Doing so probably lets us keep the established "Dock" and still
be consistent.

Changing this bug accordingly.

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 1968757] Re: New icon still not present on Ubuntu Desktop Guide

2022-04-15 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Hi Doug!

I'm tempted to ask for ubuntu-logo.png to be changed before release,
even if it's too late (we are in Final Freeze).

As regards the web site, we should also change the logo in the header of
all the pages. But that, and favicon.ico, are not technically tied to
the release, and thus not as urgent.

Only ubuntu-logo.png affects the yelp version.

2022-04-13 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Right, something like that is what I have in mind too. But I think we
should first ask if that way to use it is allowed.

And note that the current logo is used both when browsing the guide
through yelp and on the web version. We need to make sure it looks ok on
both places.

Thanks for your report!

Unfortunately the new rectangular logo won't fit in all places where the
icon is used in the Ubuntu Desktop Guide. So we need to figure out a way
to handle that, but it will happen only for the 22.10 release.

usual tricks (which one does not have to use to connect using Windows,

Even when I paste this curl-obtained content into "connect-

internet connection. Chrome seems to make it a little farther than
FireFox as the title bar changes to:

What happened instead: Wi-Fi connected, but cannot reach the

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 1952538] Re: Report a problem in Ubuntu page: Step 1: "nameofprogram" unclear

2022-03-07 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your extended thoughts, Zian. However, that's a discussion
far beyond the wording of the Ubuntu Desktop Guide and hence off topic
on this bug report.

I'm not quite sure, but I think the ubuntu-quality mailing list may be a
proper place to raise that discussion.

https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-quality

If that proves to not be the best place either, they will hopefully
point you in the right direction.

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 1954429] Re: wrong description in documentation

2021-12-10 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
To make GNOME Classic selectable on the login screen, the gnome-shell-
extensions package needs to be installed which it is not by default.

(No, Akbarkhon, vanilla-gnome-desktop is not necessary. Indeed it pulls
gnome-shell-extensions, but it pulls a myriad of other packages too.)

The gnome-classic page is from GNOME Help, and it includes this note:

"GNOME Classic is only available on systems with certain GNOME Shell
extensions installed. Some Linux distributions may not have these
extensions available or installed by default."

Maybe we should try to replace the note with an Ubuntu specific variant,
where users are suggested to install gnome-shell-extensions.

@Sebastien: Would that change make sense to you, or are you aware of any
plan where these things will soon be changed?

record.html are incorrectly sayig to mis-use this Gnome feature as a
  user-focussed 'Make a Screencast'

According to the Gnome developers who implement/maintain this feature,
it's only to be used for recording 30-second snippets and reporting
  bugs in Gnome.

By design there is no warning that a screen-recording has been
terminated at the 30 seconds mark, and it should (apparently) never be
used for general screen-recordings. Ubuntu is encouraging people to
mis-use this feature and thereby lose data (many bug reports against
Gnome going back 5+ years of people requesting it be changed, closed
  as WONTFIX / by-design).

It's non-trivial to make the feature work as described in the ubuntu
docs, and there's no mention that it's hardcoded to 30 seconds max.

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 1933758] Re: Display resolution not properly identifying in Ubuntu 21.04

Title:
Display resolution not properly identifying in Ubuntu 21.04

Status in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  OK I am using Ubuntu 21.04 on a Raspberry pi 4 model B 4GB ram.My Monitor is
LG Flatron E1942 with a resolution of 1366x768,It's a VGA monitor so I am using
an HDMI to VGA converter to connect it with the monitor. This resolution is not
automatically detected by Ubuntu, but it worked with Raspbian and Kali
Linux. Therefore I edited the config.txt file and added these following lines
hdmi_group=2,hdmi_mode=39 and hdmi_cvt=1366 768 60 3 0 0 1 otherwise the
display will go blank, after editing this the monitor used to work with Ubuntu
20 (but still was not perfect,it got some black vertical lines in gnome but it
worked perfectly fine with KDE-plasma)
but after upgrading it to 21.04 this configuration doesn't work anymore.

So at this point how the monitor work is like is this:
1)If a turn on pi with monitor connected to it the boot menu and raspberry pi
rainbow colors shows up,but the screen goes black once it enters gnome desktop.

2)If I connect the monitor only after the pi enters gnome. The monitors
shows up with a weird resolution(1280x720) but goes black if I open
  settings.

3)If I connect the monitor after the pi enters gnome. The monitors
shows up with a weird resolution(1280x720) and I use xrandr in
terminal to set resolution "again to 1280x720",at this point I can
open settings and change the resolution to 1360x768.Once I set it to
1360x768 the display is perfectly aligned,(I want this resolution
every time I boot up without doing all these adventures)

I have to repeat this step 3 every time I boot up the pi otherwise the screen
goes blank.
  Kindly fix this bug.

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 1930464] Re: settings - screen sharing -- not showing up

2021-06-01 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report.

That does not sound as a docs bug to me, but it's the functionality you
are wondering about. So closing this bug.

My advice would be to seek support at first hand at e.g.
https://askubuntu.com to find out if you missed anything.

Also, vino is an obsolete tool; see this docs issue:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-user-docs/-/issues/124

So maybe the proper first step for you is to try to make use of gnome-
remote-desktop instead.

TBH the information about how to point out errors in or discuss various
sets of documentation leaves room for improvement. Hopefully we'll find
the resources to do something about that going forward.

Title:
kASLR incorrectly described as disabled by default in
  Security/Features

Status in ubuntu-docs package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
According to: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Security/Features kASLR is disabled by
default. Additionally,
it is reported that enabling kASLR will disable the ability to hibernate.

I think that this is no longer true, but I don't want to edit the wiki
without clarifying some details.
I discovered the active kASRL when I spun up a qemu vm with Ubuntu 20.04, all
defaults and ran volatility3 on a memory dump. On the vm itself the kernel
params do not mention kASLR / Kernel hardening:

  cat /proc/cmdline
  BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-5.4.0-58-generic
root=UUID=eb6426f9-969b-4ce8-a690-ef87e410d5bf ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7

I also found this somewhere as a supposedly reliable way to tell if kASLR is
on:
  cat /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space
  2

I asked a colleague who runs his ubuntu 20.04 directly on his laptop
for his cmdline and randomize_va_space, same results. He said he did
not knowingly touch any settings regarding kASLR.

Now, it seems like at some point kASLR became on by default. But I am
not really sure whether it still affects hibernation? I can't find
anything reliable on the wiki. My colleague is not sure whether he
disabled hibernation for different reasons or whether it was disabled
in the first place and I don't want to use my vm as reference, since
its not necessarily a "typical environment".

Note, the answers here should be updated as well, since checking the
kernel params will no longer be reliable.

Thanks for your report! However, the ubuntu-docs package is for the
Ubuntu desktop guide, and not for that wiki page you mentioned.

I would suggest that you get in touch with members of
 to discuss possible changes of
the page. I also subscribed that team to this bug report, which possibly
will help.

Keeping this bug open for now, even if the "Affects" info is not
correct.

Please note that ubuntu-docs is a package for the Desktop user

a generic bug for now, since it lacks information about which package is
the culprit.

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 1754804] Re: "fonts-ubuntu" package is marked as non-free

2020-11-19 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
fonts-ubuntu is shipped by default on Ubuntu systems. It has significant
reverse dependencies and cannot be uninstalled easily. Debian considers
fonts-ubuntu to be “non-free” while Canonical disagrees.

Recently I have seen two Ask Ubuntu questions where users have run vrms,
found fonts-ubuntu to be non-free, and tried to uninstall the package:

* https://askubuntu.com/q/1292336

* https://askubuntu.com/q/1292751

This situation is unfortunate, and the explanation is that the control
file states "non-free". Given the difference in opinion, the control
file should not state "non-free" when building for Ubuntu.

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 1904153] Re: What happens when I suspend my computer? - No explanation given

2020-11-13 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report.

The page in question is part of the Ubuntu Desktop Guide, which
primarily targets inexperienced users. So it's not the right place to
elaborate and include technical details.

It's unfortunate that you experience problems with suspend. Please feel
free to submit a bug report about that:

ubuntu-bug systemd

or add your observations via a comment on some of the already existing
suspend related bugs:

What happens when I suspend my computer? - No explanation given

Status in ubuntu-docs package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
There is an article about What happens when I suspend my computer?

  https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/power-suspend.html.en

This article contains no information about what happens when I suspend
  the computer.

The current explanation is "computer will sleep" - this is wrong.

  A computer can not sleep.
A human or an animal can sleep.

I expected some more non-symbolic, non-childish explanation about what
happens in Ubuntu when suspend is selected on the logout dialog box.
Especially I wanted to know if a harddisk is needed, if I need a swap
space, if only ram is used and so on.

Yes, of course I wanted to know more about that because in 2020 Ubuntu
still has problems with suspend - this is so sad.

I suggest writing some more technically detailed explanation about
what really happens when "I suspend my computer".

2020-10-07 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report, but it's apparently not a bug in the desktop
documentation.

Please feel free to file a new bug against a reasonable package. If you
are using standard Ubuntu it may be gnome-shell, for instance. But if
you do, please submit the bug using this terminal command:

ubuntu-bug gnome-shell

Also, make an effort to explain the behavior in more detail and compare
it with the expected behavior.

So yes, a link to that section sounds like a good solution to me.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1895065 ***

I decided to drop the whole "Chat & Social Networking" section. It has
consisted of a few pages without any equivalent in GNOME Help. The
contents is indeed obsolete, and I'm closing this bug by making it a
duplicate of bug #1895065. The Ubuntu docs team does not currently have
the resources to maintain the section.

If it's considered important to include this kind of information in the
desktop guide, I would suggest an upstream wishlist issue:

Instant messaging options seem to be out of date. For instance, Google

would recommend replacing this page with a few helpful links to

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 1895065] [NEW] Drop net-chat.page and its sub pages

2020-09-09 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Public bug reported:

The net-chat section basically deals with:

- Empathy
- Skype

Empathy can be considered dead:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-user-docs/-/commit/a5b8b525

As regards Skype the default software installer is now snap based, and
the described method for installing does not work due to bug #1887509.

Let's stop confusing our users and drop the net-chat section.

** Affects: ubuntu-docs (Ubuntu)

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 1891825] Re: x2go does not register fixed font path

2020-08-16 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
ubuntu-docs is a package for Ubuntu's desktop guide, and your problem
has apparently nothing to do with that. Re-assigning.

** Package changed: ubuntu-docs (Ubuntu) => x2goserver (Ubuntu)

Bug description:
After starting an x2go session the fontpath /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc/

  xset fp+ /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc/

xterm and emacs work as expected. Please fixed that soon. In times of
Corona virus x2go is a very importand tool. In 18.04 it worked.

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 1886282] Re: Translation update of desktop guide

2020-07-08 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I verified the test case using

- version 20.04.3 of ubuntu-docs

- version 3.36.2+git20200704-0ubuntu0.1 of gnome-user-docs (and a few
gnome-user-docs- packages)

- version 3.36.2-0ubuntu0.1 of gnome-getting-started-docs (and a few
gnome-getting-started-docs- packages)

from focal-proposed. Installation went smooth, and I had no problem with
navigating the English respective Swedish version of the desktop guide.

  [Regression Potential]

"It's just docs", i.e. possible issues won't affect other parts of the

the regression risk should be low.

  [Other]

The gnome-user-docs source diff may appear to be very large. The
explanation is that, unlike in the upstream release tarballs, the
localized pages are not included in the git snapshots we use as
upstream for this upload. That does not matter for the binaries; we
generate those localized pages at build time anyway.

[Documentation-packages] [Bug 1886305] Re: The apt link points to a transition package 'gnome-tweak-tool' instead of 'gnome-tweaks'

2020-07-05 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report.

Yes it does, and that's intentional.

https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-doc/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-
docs/tree/html/fix-urls.sed#n36

That way the link works also for Xenial users who navigate the latest
version of the desktop guide online.

But Xenial will be EOL in a year, and we should probably drop that
replacement soon.
