Re: [Dorset] Vote Geek Campaign

2010-04-07 Thread Ralph Corderoy

Hi Keith,

Point out to her that this is still (allegedly) a democracy, and her
job is to represent her constituents' views in Parliament rather than
to represent her party's views to you. In other words, if she has
three letters against the DEB and one in favour, her job is to vote
against it regardless of a) her personal opinion or b) her party's
 opinion.

I'm not sure that's how it's meant to work, even before party politics
come into it. The MP is not there as a simple proxy for partial
referendums based on his post bag.

Cheers,
Ralph.

Well, as wrong as it is that an individual wields this much power over
his or her constituents, I can see that a situation like that described
would be open to abuse from vocal pressure groups.

The down side of that is that you get MPs like ours (Desmond Swayne, New
Forest West), who have an untouchable majority and personally support
hunting, and will therefore decide on our behalf that the ban on hunting
with dogs should be repealed, regardless of the true numbers for or against.

I believe that ultimately our 'democracy' has been eroded by our
laziness (guilty as charged - who goes to political meetings these
days?), and bought out by large corporations with vested interests. I'd
like to see money and religion removed from the equation somehow, but
acknowledge that is unlikely to happen any time soon, if ever.

Frank Zappa had it right when he said that anyone putting themselves
forward for the job of politician probably isn't fit to do it. The job
should be a heavy load to bear and not a leg-up on to the money and
power gravy-train.
