See the original subject, "WiFi Broadband" in my opinion this is going
to be a WiFi system to cover a small area.

It could well be fibre to the box, copper to the house. This is what

Something has changed with the way that SAMBA works recently. Via
Dolphin I see my 'temp' directory across the network on my XP box. Until
recently I could not open a file directly, but had to copy it across to
the Kubuntu box. The other day I forgot and opened one directly and it
worked.

He's just proved me wrong because after a crash in k3b, (I don't know why;

I remember a similar problem, caused by DNS issues. The systems were
configured to use OpenDNS, and they serve a search page for any failed
DNS lookup. Samba clients were using DNS as a first option. Instead of
a failure that would cause them to try other methods, they were trying
to use IP address returned, which was the OpenDNS search page web server.

The fix, IIRC, was to create a /etc/samba/smb.conf file on the client
machines and set (again from memory) the "name resolve order" paramter.

The smbclient and smbcontrol command line tools are very useful for
debugging!

Something like "smbcontrol all debug 3" will set all daemons to a higher
log level. You can then tail -f the log file in one terminal and try
"smbclient -L //somename" or "smbclient -L //192.168.1.1", using the
actual IP of the machine you want to browse.

Best regards,

John

I have been using Ubuntu for a few years and find it works well. There
are usually two ways of doing things in Ubuntu ;

One is to use cryptic commands in a terminal, the other is just point
and click. (which I prefer because I am not an expert).

Ask me and I will help.

If there's any particular thing causing a hold up to you using it, feel
free to ask on the mailing list before Tuesday. There's also IRC
(Internet Relay Chat) where some of us hang out and chat at varying
times of the day and night on a channel called #dorset.

Hope to see you next Tuesday.

Hmmm. How would I check for this? His machine has the same version of
Kubuntu as mine, so could it be different?

Also. Is it a good thing to do a reverse lookup? I thought smb/cifs used a
'browse master' to manage the identity of clients on the network. It's a
while since I had to do anything serious with samba, but my recollection is
that the client advertises itself on the network, the browse master
interrogates the client to find out who it is, the client responds and then
appears on the network with its samba hostname.

Does it also need a DNS?

The delay could be DNS timeouts. Is Samba configured to do a reverse DNS
lookup of clients? If it is, is there a valid reverse DNS entry (almost
certainly not)?

You've come to the right place. Can you bring your laptop with you?
Unfortunately, the Broadway has no WiFi (we've struggled to find the right
