I think it is also the best option for networking even in a Linux only environment. However with each Debian distro update, the CIFS support seems to get more and more broke, which is a real shame. mount.cifs in Debian Squeeze requires entries in /etc/fstab. This is supposedly for security reasons but is a huge pain. Apart from now requiring loads of entries for every user and every share in /etc/fstab, Nautilus now gets in on the act trying to mount shares (sometimes failing due to password requirements), resulting in multiple copies of shares appearing in file open windows, some of which work, some of which don't. Horribly broke. There also seems to be new problems with the Linux extensions which also group/user rights to be passed to clients. Used to work in Lenny/Etch, now broke. Really frustrating when new releases seem to take you backwards. [Dorset] Looking to move into the area...
Hi everyone, I'm looking to move into the area, but am being held up on finding work. I don't suppose any of you wonderful, talented folk are looking for someone with any of the following skills? I have a very wide hodgepodge of skills, and am looking for a tech, devel, design or film role. Tech (Linux sysadmin-ing) is the only thing that I've actually done in a professional capacity, I've got qualifications in tech, graphics and film. If anything on the lists below catches your eye, please feel free to e-mail me for my full CV and any questions you might have, or to ask to see my portfolio. Most importantly, I'm eager and enthusiastic, happy to learn new skills and always prepared to teach others what I know. Tech / developer: * LPIC-3 qualified (the Linux Professional Institute's senior level qualification). * Confident Linux sysadmin. * Experienced at configuring services and common applications found on servers (ask for specifics). * Knows ZABBIX inside-out, but would rather use Nagios. * Capable hardware tinkerer/datacentre monkey. * Exceedingly good with LDAP (... anyone actually care these days?). * Thoroughly versed in XHTML, CSS, LDIF, JSON and Bash. * Familiar with Python, SQL, JavaScript, jQuery. * Has also been known to write RDF, XML, Perl, and PHP (begrudgingly). * Also, can poke Windows Server until stuff happens. Graphics / design / film: * Broadly talented graphic designer / artist who has done everything at one time or another. * Can handle everything from pixel art to large-format printing. * Experience with both raster, vector (inc. typefaces and animation) and limited 3D work. * Confident illustrator. * Interested in usability (applicable to UI and web design). * Capable film editor, producer, cinematographer, storyboard artist, gaffe, etc. * Happy to work with most graphics software, has experience with GIMP, Photoshop, Corel Draw, Inkscape and Blender. [Dorset] Moving one LUG over - hello from a new user in Dorchester
Hello there, I've recently moved from Plymouth to Dorchester, and so I'm also moving from the lovely people at the Devon & Cornwall LUG to you. I'm a Java and Python developer by trade, currently as a freelancer, and have been using Linux for a few years now. I'd still consider myself reasonably newbie though. Day to day I use Ubuntu on my desktop machines and Debian on the servers, but I'm trying my hand at Arch at the moment in an effort to learn a little more. Hopefully I'll be able to come to a meeting sometime soon and meet people. By the way, does the LUG have an IRC channel perchance? [Dorset] Linux Limitations
How good is your linux installation? I still have three problems that are preventing me from getting rid of M $. 1. I need XP for my scanner, which is so old and odd that it is not supported in Linux. 2. I cannot get Google Earth to work. Nearly there, application is running, but no earth. 3. Downloading library ebooks. They come as an ascm XML file, that is used by Adobe to download the epub document, that I can then import into Calibre. But under linux I cannot get the epub document. That seems to be something that has not been done in linux yet.
