Re: [Dorset] Somewhat Off Topic - Can Anyone Recommend a Decent Tablet Computer?

2023-10-31 Thread Peter Merchant

I have bought used/refurbished stuff locally- Ferndown Industrial Estate, from
Elf.co.uk. Remember that their price list is ex-VAT.   Their prices are not
that hot, but they are local.

There are only three magazines that I read regularly; the RSPB Magazine,
the Dorset Wildlife Trust Magazine and Linux Format.  The first two are
free to members and I already have a subscription to the Linux mag.
Maybe when the subscription runs out, I'll look at what the Library has
to offer.
I too find reading them on a tablet helps.  My Chinese Android 10"
tablet  Teclast M40 circa 2021 (£100 today)  is OK for me but maybe
compare the latest screen spec to meet your requirements. Contact
Peter if you also wish to try this 2 year old model.

I'm currently thinking about a Lenovo, but it would be useful to look at
that too.

Re: [Dorset] Is "dd" adequate for cloning a disk?

Hi Andrew,

A good point. dd(1) obviously doesn't do that. I had an idea GParted
could when copying a partition because it could use an external
filesystem-specific program to do the copy but browsing
https://gparted.org suggests I'm wrong.

Copying only the important bits is a useful optimisation and it's been
used by many over the years. But I always wonder ‘If it goes wrong for
me, how many years pass before I find the end of some file is missing?’.
Then I go for dd and copy all the bits, even the ‘unused’ ones. :-)
