Paul, thanks for that. I'd looked at Joplin once before but - for some
reason that escapes me - I'd dismissed it. Since you posted your note,
I've moved all my Simplenotes notes to Joplin and more besides. The fact
that it works on Linux, Mac and Android, and the fact that I can store
data under my control (in ownCloud in this case), ticks just about every
box.

Anyhoo, my strange issues apart, Joplin is probably worth a look.

As I now have converted all my notes, both from knotes and from Colornote into
Keep, I thank you for your suggestions, but I think that I'll just run with
this for awhile. It does what I want.

I was using Evernote for a while, until I realised that I was using it
primarily to save bookmarks from my phone and changes had made that no longer a
good option. I seem to remember it was no longer saving the link but taking a
snapshot or something, and getting them out was a pain. Data was going in but
never coming out, and my other notes were getting lost in the mix. Migrating
was a nightmare; which happened when they changed some terms and conditions
iirc.

Anyway, I now use Joplin which uses markup and stores the data in Dropbox
(currently, I'll be moving Nextcloud soon). That means I can sync with my
desktop; I'm using an Appimage on the desktop...

...and thanks to this post I've finally got round to both configuring it and
migrating my data to Nextcloud from Dropbox. On the other hand, I have also
realised why I haven't already done it, which means my phone and desktop are
currently at odds!

My Nextcloud instance moved to a temporary home on a Raspberry Pi (Nextcloud
Box) and is still there. This leaves me slightly restricted in terms of adding
an https certificate. It does support Let'sEncrypt, but only if I open up a
port forward to my Pi to authenticate, which I don't want to do. Self signed
certificates are not handled well on many Android apps (they don't allow
override easily, or keep wanting to to confirm the override - sensible security
measures no doubt). I'm assuming that is why I can't connect on the Android
app; the desktop version has a nice checkbox to ignore certificate issues.

Anyhoo, my strange issues apart, Joplin is probably worth a look.

I have looked at Boostnote in the past, never really got into using it (I was
looking for
something to use for a job at work). I ended up downloading it and looking at
it. I was interested
as it was available for windows and Linux (.deb format and install on to Debian
based distro ok).

I guess it depends on what you want at the end of the day.

I use Evernote which sound fairly similar as a solution. There's an unofficial
client for Linux called nixnote.

Another option is Emacs Org mode. Everything from note taking, todo lists,
agendas, calendaring, project time tracking to producing formatted documents
(using markup) and publishing to LaTeX, PDF, HTML, and can use Tramp mode to
access from anywhere over SSH.

Cheers

[Dorset] Knotes and other means of keeping files

2019-03-16 Thread PeterMerchant via dorset

At the last meeting I was asking about knotes recovery and exporting. What I
ended up doing is putting back the old hard disk from before I upgraded, and
copying and pasting the knotes 'post-it's' into Google Keep.

I then looked into getting the stuff from Android Colornotes so that it is
available on my PC, and google is not very helpful on this, though it did point
to theĀ  'send' option in the ... menu. That is wonderful and has sent my notes
directly to google Keep.

Everything is in one place now, so no more wondering where I recorded something
I wanted to remember -- hah!

Until Google retires Keep.
