The CD USB process used to be complicated, also it requires that you have a spare USB flash drive which is large enough. I suspect that it is a good method for a lot of people. I have created the boot CD already, and I have spare CD drives lying around. So for me that's the easiest way to do it. I also suspect that all laptops/netbooks made these days with USB but no optical drive will come with BIOSes which can boot from USB optical drives. And yes, the USB to ATA adapters are available in many places. I have one which looks suspiciously similar to this: http://cpc.farnell.com/_/psg02625/usb-2-0-to-sata-ide-combo-adaptor/dp/CS15616 Comes with a power adapter which isn't pictured. SATA and PATA connectors work at the same time, too. Re: [Dorset] Goodies for Reasons Harvest
Since making the BIOS alteration the fan runs permanently but unobtrusively when running on mains. VIA chucks out heat, but the hardware is more than adequate and it doesn't even get warm anymore. Should be the default really. As for performance, it will run a realtime video edge detection from the internal camera perfectly well, but it has trouble handling realtime face detection where a P4 or even in a pinch a P3 will handle it, although it has to be said that the P3 will hang eventually. Word to the wise- I noticed the HP2133 getting warm, although there have been no troubles. On the web, certain people suggested that overheating was an issue. It has been replaced by the 2140, with a change from the Via chip to the Atom. However, I think this is performance-based rather than heating issue based. If you are at all worried about overheating with your HP, go into BIOS at boot time and 'enable' 'fan always on at AC', which gives the cooling fan a higher priority. You will lose battery range, but at a shade under two hours I find it good, and I like the peace of mind from knowing that temperature control is tighter. Such drives may be available on Freecycle, at the local tip or from someone on here who has spares getting in their way. The USB to PATA SATA adapter I have is a very useful device, one of those things that now I have it I don't know how I lived without it. I'm sure they aren't all that expensive, or not considering the use I have had out of it. It allows connecting hard disks and CD drives without opening a case, rebooting, or any of that sort of nonsense. :) And I can connect the drives to a laptop. The adapter combined with an old 'internal' CD drive (which you can also get for free if you don't already have a spare, or borrow one from a desktop PC) works well, for occasional use anyway. -- Andrew. Re: [Dorset] Goodies for Reasons Harvest. (and OT: Broken Winblowsbox)
Terry, as long as you have the original XP disc(s) and you haven't installed on more than three motherboards, you should be able to do a transfer. However, you will probably not be able to keep the existing software libraries and data files unless you are lucky enough to be able to do an upgrade install. (XP64-XP64). It is a betting certainty you will need a clean install if you change the hardware. If the box is still reasonably 'good' spec hardware once you have patched it up, I would be tempted to go for something to replace XP which probably isn't available anymore if you don't have it. Vista has compatibility issues with XP, but '7' is supposed to be able to run XP compatibility and drivers. I don't know what that would cost, but it shouldn't be stupendous. Meanwhile I've saved £50 a month on my landline, so it looks like I can go ahead with an HP Mini. FYI 'Reasons Harvest' is a Randian Capitalist believers social phenomenon. They recommend people short of money just buy a bottled water to annoy the Greens and Commies. It's all about being conspicuous. Chance would be a fine thing! Also, my wife's seriously grunty Winblows games PC has just popped it's clogs, so a netbook isn't going to cut the mustard. I'm now thinking about whether to repair or replace. This is a 64-bit, dual- core AMD Athlon running XP 64 (and Kubuntu). My inclination is to replace the motherboard (it fails memtest regardless of which memory chips are installed, but runs OK *nearly* all the time). However, I've no experience of doing this with a Winblows box. I have a nasty feeling that I'll have problems getting it re-activated and even if I do, XP 64 was never very good on the driver front.
