Well It's working fine thanks. The quoted message was sent to my DLUG address and not the list, so when I replied it went to the list, instead of direct to Clive. After that I used Clive's own address. I'll suss this mail filtering out eventually I'm trying out Ralph's suggestion of filtering on the List ID. Hi Terry I have a 'new' DVD drive from my Laptop; when I got it from Novatech I had it changed for a blueray drive and they included the original un-used drive. It's yours if any good for you. I've now discovered that in Dell laptops the DVD Drive is only held in with one screw so I now know that the drives in neither of my two machines have the right connectors. I've found some slimline SATA DVD drives online for around £15, but the blurb on them is not very forthcoming on the physical interfaces and all the pictures I've found a front view only. I might just buy an external drive and accept that the internal one is just there to cover up the hole. -- Terry Coles -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, Tuesday, 2015-09-01 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ New thread: mailto:dorset@mailman.lug.org.uk / CHECK IF YOU'RE REPLYING Reporting bugs well: http://goo.gl/4Xue / TO THE LIST OR THE AUTHOR

If you were looking at something like the Samsung, http://amzn.to/1Nk7G9E, then I tend to take the `Item model number SH-224DB/RSMS', which is the manufacturer's, and Google for that for more information, e.g. an unboxing video that shows the back, https://youtu.be/nP7aJ651WFE https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA#Cables.2C_connectors.2C_and_ports will help identify your old drive's connectors and the cables you've got. Hi again Terry, Have you another drive to swap in, or another machine to put this drive into? You've already tried other disks, I assume? (Andrew's suggestion on #dorset.) Re: [Dorset] Possible DVD Drive Failure
Hi Terry, Any chance cables to the DVD drive were knocked? I tried removing and reseating them. No change. In any case, I'd have thought that the machine wouldn't see the drive at all without good integrity on the connectivity. My TV sat there with standby lit just fine, but would intermittently fail to wake up from the remote's on/off button. I finally tracked it down to a dodgy wall power socket; the TV must have had problems drawing the extra power it needed. :-) Try `dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/dev/null bs=2048' and just see if that's happy? I think DVDs have a 2KiB sector size. I get: terry@BEIGE:~$ dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/dev/null bs=2048 dd: failed to open ‘/dev/sr0’: No medium found Have you another drive to swap in, or another machine to put this drive into? I'm surprised folks still use spinning plastic. :-) Can't you use an old small USB flash stick to boot off? That thought had crossed my mind and I guess that this ould get me round the current crisis. However, I still buy audio CDs and rip them to Ogg Vorbis, so it would be inconvenient. Well, meanwhile I'd guess your OS would boot and run faster from something that has `no' seek time, so it might be better to do that even when you have a working DVD drive. Re: [Dorset] Possible DVD Drive Failure
Hi Terry, I then shut down so that I could swap the SATA and power cables from the SSD to the 320GB disc. Any chance cables to the DVD drive were knocked? sudo mount -t auto /dev/sro /media/terry I get 'mount: no medium found on /dev/sr0'. I'll be back if that doesn't work :-) Well it did, but not without one or two hiccups: 1. Booting into SystemRescueCD was very flaky; it only worked about 50% of the time. I'm currently blaming a very old USB stick for that. 2. I had to re-install grub2 (obvious really), because the SSD drive, being brand new, didn't have it installed in the MBR. When I previously did this with the 1TB drive, I had previously installed Kubuntu on it from scratch, so update-grub was all I needed. The machine now boots in approx 30 s, whereas it was about 90 s with the 1TB drive (and 2 mins + with my old machine). Loading apps is like flicking a switch; even the GIMP! A good part of the performance boost is down to the core-i7 processor and 8GB of RAM in this (new to me) Optiplex, but the SSD has certainly made a big difference to load times. -- Terry Coles -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, Tuesday, 2015-09-01 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ New thread: mailto:dorset@mailman.lug.org.uk / CHECK IF YOU'RE REPLYING Reporting bugs well: http://goo.gl/4Xue / TO THE LIST OR THE AUTHOR
