Re: [Drakelist] R4B T4XB Tuning up

2010-04-15 Thread FJMelick
I use the spot position on the Transmitter and tune for max on the
receiver s meter. Preselectors first and main tuning knob on Transmitter
second.
Plate next and load control at 3.5 for 80 meters and 4.5 on 40 meters and
higher freq.
I noticed that I get an additional 20 to 30 watts output when I check the
watt meter if I tweek the preselector on the receiver again.
Is this normal? If so why?

Thanks

Re: [Drakelist] R4B T4XB Tuning up

2010-04-15 Thread Garey Barrell

Fred -

This only occurs when transceiving with receiver control, and is a
result of the loading of the cable used for the INJ connection. The
lower the capacitance of this cable, the less variation in peaking the
Preselector. The effect can also be minimized by doing the INJ
alignment with the pair coupled together with the cable you plan to use
for INJ.

ALWAYS be sure and dip the Final PLATE control LAST.

[Drakelist] L-7 amp soft start?

2010-04-15 Thread Bill Dzurilla
Anyone know where to find a soft start for the L-7? Jeff at Harbach told me his
L-4B soft start does not work on the L-7, and his universal soft start does not
work on either the L-7 or the L-4B.

Re: [Drakelist] 2-C loud buzz

Perhaps the transformer screws are loose and when you turn it upside down
the chassis no longer vibrates in sympathy with the transformer.

My 2-C, which I bought new in 1968, suddenly developed a very loud buzz
which is there, unchanging, no matter what position any controls are in.
Suspecting the main filter cap, I took the bottom cover off and turned the
receiver upside down, turned it on and the buzz was gone. I could not
provoke it to come back. So I reassembled it and it worked fine for a few
days, but now the loud buzz is back. I'd expect a bad electrolytic to stay
bad. Is there a known cause for this behaviour? I have the manual with
 schematic.

I don't know why not, the L-7 and the L-4B are, for most practical purposes,
virtually identical. Is it a physical size issue? Soft start circuits aren't
rocket science, there is plenty of info on the web to roll your own. You could
even use series light bulbs with a manual bypass switch.

Seems to me I looked at some pics on the Heathkit shop web site one time, and
you could almost trace out the circuit from the pics.

In the meantime, always power up with the amp in CW mode. That reduces the
turn-on surge by a bit.
