Re: [Drakelist] THANKS GAREY!

2010-08-02 Thread nt8c
It's important to realize that during WWII most of our competitors were
ether severely damaged,
wounded financially, or just plain bombed flat. The Germans and Japanese
spent the next thirty years rebuilding all of
their schools, cities, roads, and bridges. The 1950's were fabulous in
large part because there
was demand from everywhere and no other country could supply it but the
US. Life is a whole lot easier when
you don't have any competition!

 those were really the days!
The US built almost everything, there was a plant on almost every

Now I go buy them and they are empty.

I don't think many of those jobs are coming back from overseas. Me,
 I'd
rather use a boat anchor Drake, Collins Halli etc (and TT,Elecraft)

than any of the JAP radios.

Re: [Drakelist] Value of a Drake Rig

2010-08-02 Thread Garey Barrell

Lee, and others

You are embarrassing me! The contractors are already here, widening the
doors so I can get my head through them again!

I guess I am a Luddite in more ways than one. I believe Ham Radio is
about learning, and sharing knowledge. I have a distinct advantage over
most 'normal' people, in that I have been a Ham for 53+ years, and been
using and working on Drake gear since the beginning. You don't have to
be particularly smart to pick up quite a bit about a subject in 50
years!! Especially one that you love doing..

Bottom line, I really love doing this. I can't haul the stuff around
like I used to, and packing and shipping is a nightmare for me, so I
don't work on any stuff other than my own, which is plenty to keep me
busy! I enjoy the challenge of figuring out where the problem is, and I
get to use others arms, legs and eyes for searching it out.

So thank you all for the kind words, and know that I enjoy every minute
of it!

One more request. Use 'REPLY ALL' when using the list for
troubleshooting and technical exchanges. This list and the archives
provided so faithfully by Thom are a treasure trove of Drake information
compiled by MANY, and should be used to the fullest. Don't be shy about
suggesting possible 'fixes' for these things based on YOUR experience.
Diagnosing these troubles from a distance, via text, is a challenge at
best. While you may not always be right, every little bit of
information or symptom could be the KEY to getting a radio up and
running again.

Does anyone have the information on how to rewired this so I can bypass all the

Hi Bob,
Take a look here:

for the schematic, then you should be able to figure it out. Google

Re: [Drakelist] R4B xtal filter bandwidth problem - an update with the cause

2010-08-02 Thread Griffiths G.
Folks,

My Drake R4B now has the correct bandwidth, and it is not quite so deaf. Thanks
to all who provided suggestions.

The problem was inside the xtal filter after T5. The metal cans of the two
HC6/U crystals in the filter are soldered to a wire that goes to chassis -
sensible.
But just very slight pressure to the can of the 5642kHz xtal caused it
internally to short its signal input to its can, and hence to chassis. The fit
into the overall screening can was enough to do this when it was assembled.
Equivalent pressure on the can of the 5645kHz xtal had no effect. So the
problem is internal to the 5642kHz xtal.

As a work around, I've removed the chassis wire from the 5642kHz xtal can and
wrapped the xtal can in insulating tape. The bandwidth is now as expected, as
determined by the 2nd IF LC filter.

I'd welcome any suggestions as to where I could obtain a good 5642kHz xtal ...

As a matter of record, there is a post by Joe Rafferty on Tue, 15 Jun 2004
11:30:39 -0700 where the cause of an R-4B with image problem was traced to a
faulty 5642kHz xtal, but no note of what the actual fault was.
