[Drakelist] FS-4 cable

2011-08-14 Thread Neil M Califano
What cable can be used instead of the original Drake cable for the FS-4 - R4A?
Can any crystal socket be used?

Re: [Drakelist] Drake Paint

2011-08-14 Thread Garey Barrell

There are a couple of Testor's or ModelMaker paints that come very close.

The Dark Gray is #1791 'Navy Gray', and the Light Gray is #1794 'Agressor Gray'. They can of
course be darkened or lightened to allow for aging by adding a little black or white if necessary.

The secret to 'touch-up' success is to 'rub in' the spot to the surrounding area so you don't have a
'bump' of new paint. 600 or even 1000-1500 grit 'wet/dry' sandpaper, and finish with something like
Novus #2 or toothpaste, etc.

I have a minor scratch on the panel that I need to repair. Unfortunately new panels are no longer
available.

Re: [Drakelist] FS-4 cable

2011-08-14 Thread Garey Barrell

Neil -

Needs to be low capacity cable, as short as possible, (12-18). RG-62A/U, RG-59/U, Belden 8421 Mic
cable, etc. 14 - 18 pF/ft.

The center conductor needs to be plugged into ANY crystal socket, to the pin that is 'common' to all
the others. Typically the bottom pin of each crystal socket, and the shield of the cable to chassis
ground, NOT to the other crystal socket pin. It does not matter which crystal socket is used, nor
does the socket used have to be selected from the front panel.

The cable should also be unplugged from the receiver when using the internal
crystals.

Re: [Drakelist] Drake Paint

2011-08-14 Thread Garey Barrell

Lee -

It does take some practice to get it perfect. Novus #2 is NOT the polish, but a very fine
abrasive. Brasso polish is another good choice. The idea is to not 'have' a bump, either a very
fine artist's brush, or even Q-Tip to kind of 'blot' the paint on, multiple very, very thin coats.
Then 'rub it out' to blend it into the surrounding area. Finish with a 'wax job' of carnauba paste wax.

I worked for a Motorola distributor in High School, fixing transistor radios that came back on
warranty. Their service guys were all tube types and had no idea what to do with a transistor! :-)

Anyway, this was back in the day of stereo console radio phonos in huge credenzas that were
furniture first, and electronics later. They would often get nicked either by a service tech not
being careful, or sometimes just out of the box. There was an old guy (probably my age now!) who
would come around every few days with his little kit of wax sticks, putty knives, and alcohol
burner. He'd melt a little wax on a putty knife over the burner, and then swipe it across the
nick. Of course the first 'skill' was picking the right color wax stick, and he'd sometimes mix two
together on the knife. Then would come the 1500 grit paper, pumice, and other 'magic potions' that
he would rub over it with his fingertip. Took about three minutes a nick. If you turned your back
for a minute and then turned back around, he was done and you could NOT find where the nick had
been! Even when you 'knew' where it was.

I watched him quite a few times, and once the wax was placed, everything was done in 'little' steps
with a VERY light touch. But the blemish would just disappear.

I never got his touch with wood, but I have done some panels with light paint scratches, (bright
aluminum, but not 'gouged',) to the point where 'I' could see it, but someone else couldn't, even
when I pointed it out to them.

Garey,
Do you mean sand the are after the paint has dried to remove the bump and blend in the paint to
the old?

Won't that change the shinyness of the area?
I guess if it is used wet and very fine and very ligtly done...??
WOW, I would have to try that on a old bad panel first.

[Drakelist] L4-B on AM

2011-08-14 Thread jsloss
Has anyone used their L4B as an amplifier being driven by a 30-40W output plate
modulated rig (ie AF-67 etc). Your comments on results, power output etc will
be appreciated. The L-4B normally follows a C-line; this is just a little
extra choir for it.

Thank you.

I too would be interested in the L4B's performance/use on AM. I may use the
DX-60 or T4XC as the driver, but same question, hi.

Re: [Drakelist] L4-B on AM

2011-08-14 Thread K9sqg
At one time, there seemed to be great interest in the L-4B because it could run
1 kw input on CW, RTTY, and AM. A lot of other amps were rated at, for example
1,500 watts input on SSB but maybe only 700 or so on AM because they didn't
have power supplies, cooling, etc. for continuous duty or high duty cycle
modes. I'm sure there are some users out there, maybe on some of the AM nets,
that have direct experience. Note, however, the top of the cabinet, especially
over the tubes, gets quite warm in such applications...
