Re: [Drakelist] TR-7 Question

2009-06-26 Thread JOHN STRINGER
I think a foolproof way to identify a real TR7A is to look at the cable from
the mic input to the spare phono plug at the back. When this is done at the
factory this cable is well and truly embedded in the wiring harness and is
certainly not a last minute add on.  John  GI3KDR.

Subject: Re: [Drakelist] TR-7 Question

Pete,  the quick answer to both questions is yes. Unfortunately Drake, when
they were liquidating their inventory, sold to anyone that wanted them, the top
front panel section which indicated the TR-7A.    I have personally seen those
panels placed on very early TR7's with serial numbers in the 1000 range and we
know the TR7A appeared around serial number 10,600. So in some cases
purchasing a TR7A is a buyer beware.

I wrote an article on how to identify the model differences for that very
reason. Drake did in fact put the serial number in two places, on the rear
panel and on the inside, front side of the front sub panel. It is major
surgery to get to that area which is why most folks would not attempt.  But to
prove a point, it is one of several way to identify the exact model.

In looking at one of the recent auction sites I note that a TR-7A is listed as
being authentic. The proof was to take off the front panel and demonstrate that
a S/N behind the panel matched the S/N on the back of the radio.

Just a curiosity and perhaps for those of us new to the list, has there been a
case of counterfeit TR-7A's? Is that something that those of us unfamiliar with
past history should be aware of.

Has there been some attempt to pass off bogus TR-7A'a as genuine?

[Drakelist] FOR SALE: DRAKE R7 RECEIVER

2009-03-04 Thread John Stringer
I wish to sell this receiver which I bought from Evert,PA2KW, when he
advertised it on this list last year.

As Evert said then this receiver"looks new straight from the factory". He
bought it from the first owner, and it came from a non-smoking environment.
All switches feel like new,it has a new (non sticky paint) cabinet, good side
panels and works great. The front panel is like it was never used and indeed
it is obvious the receiver had little use during it's lifetime.

The Serial number is 2838 which is just before the R7A rebadging. It is
fitted out to full R7A specification. It has all 5 filters: 300hz, 500hz,
1.8khz, 2.3khz, and 4.0khz. It is fitted with the NB7 Noise Blanker.

It also comes with the Operating Manual, the Service Manual, and the special
Interface Cable to theTR7.

PRICE: 900 Euros, which is what I bought it for.

PAYMENT: Preferably PayPal, if not Bankers' Draft.

SHIPPING: It will be packed double boxed and fully insured. Of course the
Buyer pays Shipping Costs.

REPUTATION: See my CV on QRZ.COM.

INTEREST. If interested please contact me direct by email.

[Drakelist] TR7 with Modern Linear

2009-03-01 Thread John Stringer
I am using my TR7 with a modern linear and have come up with what can best
be described as an irritation rather than a problem.
The linear requires only 20watts drive for 400 watts out (our limit).
In SSB the only output control on the TR7 is the Mic Gain.It is a real
fiddle to adjust this for 20 watts and more so to keep it there. The
smallest touch on the gain control can double the output and also it cannot
cope with peaks.
Modern radios have SSB output level separated from Mic Gain.
Any ideas on how to get around this situation?

Re: [Drakelist] R4C

2009-02-25 Thread John Stringer
I have had only one transaction with Radiomart and it was perfectly
successful. He offered a Drake RV7 in his usual glowing language. I asked a
question which was promptly answered and then bid and won it.
The RV7 was packed carefully and shipped quickly.
On opening the box I found that the condition exceeded the glowing "sales
language" and indeed it was just like new and worked beautifully.
The R4C he now offers does look newer in the photographs than any I have
seen, and certainly better than the two very excellent units I used to own.
I have read of his bad transactions but think some are inevitable when
reselling second hand equipment.I used to sell some locally in Northern
Ireland about 30 years ago and was caught out a few times-usually with "like
new" linears and ATU's with burned out switch contacts caused by hot
switching.
The important thing is that, when there are problems, things are put right
with the customer promptly. That is just good business! John GI3KDR

  Subject: [Drakelist] TR-7 Alignment

  Hello,
I decided to go back into my TR-7 this afternoon and do some tweeking to
my previous alignment. (the S meter seemed to read higher than my other
radios by quite a bit). After re-setting the S-meter per the manual, I
thought I'd go back over the transmitter settings and lower the output
somewhat. I had read somewhere that Drake liked to set the ALC board at
120w instead of the called for 140-150w. The purpose being purity of
emissions. I'm using it mainly with an L4B, so the extra 20-30 watts means
little.

Per the manual, I set the carrier fully clockwise on 14mhz, keyed the
radio and set the ALC pot to about 120w. Then went to 28mhz and attempted
to reset the predriver board to get the alc light to go out. No can do.
The pot is fully CCW and no more there. I remember when I did the previous
alignment set at about 145w on 14mhz, and then on 28mhz, the alc light just
started to dim at fully CCW on the predriver.

Any comments as to what I should or should not be doing? PS, its sn 5300
or so with the version 2 predriver.
  Thanks,

Re: [Drakelist] TR7A on Ebay

2009-01-22 Thread John Stringer
If the definition of a genuine TR7A is one that was produced in Miamisburg I
believe that the following 4 criteria apply with item 4 being TOTALLY
critical:

1. Front Panel perspex strip reads TR7A.
2. Serial number above about 11000 (mine is 11365)
3.The spare RCA connector on the back is now used and labelled TX in bold
black print.
4. THIS IS THE CRITICAL ONE! There is a screened lead from the RCA
connector mentioned and it goes to the board right beside the 4 pin
microphone plug. This lead is inextricably woven into the wiring harness
that goes from back to front of the radio. When you look at it you will
realise that this could only have been done at the factory.

I believe this is a conclusive test.

  Subject: [Drakelist] TR7A on Ebay

  HI all,
I got hi rez picks from Radio Mart. I looked them over good. Here's my
opinion.
  1. A EXTRA nice looking radio, looks little used with original gray case.
  2. It does have the split rear panel, and the sn is 515x...can't confirm
the last digit.
  3. TR7A face plate, that looks original.
  4. No idea of the proper boards, since no "inside" picture.
  5. No "TX" marked jack on rear panel. Nor does the spare RCA jack have
the black insulating washer found on most TR7A's.. My reference was 12129
that I previously owned, and others I've seen. There is a TR7A on ebay at
present priced at $950 to start.

So for lack of more information on boards included and the lack of the
coverted TX jack, this is no doubt a "converted" TR7.

At the end of production, Drake "may" have dumped some TR7 parts in Europe
which included some TR7A front panels. This may account for the Holland
ham's recollection of "upgraded" TR7's to TR7A's.

In any event an upgraded TR7 to a TR7A was done by Drake, but never with a
A front panel. This has been confirmed over and over again. What a
supplier did in Europe, we have no idea. One thing is clear. If the serial
number is not over 11000 or so, its not a "real" or "authentic" TR7A. It it
were mine, I'd find a parts radio and correct the front panel !!

  Simply a very nice TR7.

Re: [Drakelist] Drake TR7 and R7

2008-12-04 Thread John Stringer
Hello Jim. Thank you for the quick response. So far as the RIT is concerned
I accept your point! Certainly it is a pleasure to use the + or- 200hz
feature.
It will be interesting to see if there is any other response to the Antenna
Splitter issue. One thing which might be a clue. The person I bought the R7
from said he thought the original owner was some sort of laboratory.
Certainly it shows no sign of regular use. Regards. John. GI3KDR.

Probably the same reason I reduced the range on the RIT control in my
HR2510. WHen using the RIT as a "fine tune" control, you're not usually
going more than a couple of hundred Hertz, at the most. There's really
not much need for 6 KHz of range, and reducing the range makes it
easier to fine tune with that tiny knob.

That's an interesting one. My fisrt thought is to allow the user to
bypass the antenna selector, as the splitter has some loss through it.
There is theoretical 3 dB dignal drop through any two-way splitter
(half the signal goes to each port), plus circuit losses, which
typically adds up to 3.5 to 4 dB in the real world. However, I was
looking at the schematic just a couple of nights ago, and it appears
that the splitter circuit is bypassed when the antenna selector is set
to Main/Alt ... which would make sense. This would leave and small
(probably insignifigant) loss in the cables and switch itself.

In light of that, the only thing that really makes sense me is pehaps
the owner wanted to use the antenna selector to feed two other radios
other than the R7 from one of two antennas, at the same time the R7 was
being used on a third antenna. Or maybe that it was an easy place to
put a real antenna connector, and the owner elected to bypass what was
essentially an unused feature when the radio was used in that
configuration, or the isolation between ports wasn't sufficient for
some reason.

Maybe someone else has a more obscure reason?

[Drakelist] Drake TR7 and R7

2008-12-03 Thread John Stringer
The exchanges, initiated by Jim, on this subject have interested me
greatly as I bought an R7 recently. I bought through an ad placed on the
Drakelist by a member and a very successful transaction resulted. The radio
is the closest to a "new" Drake that I have ever owned!
It has two modifications and I do not know the reason for either of them.I
hope members will be able to offer suggestions.
1. The RIT on the R7 should be about plus or minus 3khz It has been modified
to plus or minus 200hz. Yes 200hz. Why?

2. An SO239 has been installed on the back panel right beside the Bandpass
Filter, and the centre pin of the SO239 is connected to the BPF input. The
output from the Antenna Splitter switch unit has been rerouted to the spare
RCA connector on the back panel. This has all been done so neatly with wires
in the harness that one would believe it was a factory job!
This gives two choices:
 A. Connect the antenna to the SO239 so bypassing the Antenna Switch.

B.Install a jumper between the SO239 and the spare RCA socket and put the
antenna into its proper RCA connector so routing the antenna via the Antenna
Switch--in other words the normal way.

I await the surge of responses! John. GI3KDR.

John -

There are a few ways to do this. I'm not familiar with the Acom unit,
but apparently it doesn't require much drive.

1. Construct a "power pad" to put between the TR-7A and the amp input.
This is probably the "best" way from a distortion standpoint, but
inconvenient unless you use the amp all the time. Running any SSB
transmitter with very low Mic Gain is not a good idea, since the S/N
ratio of the AF stages is at its' worst.

2. Construct a small power supply to feed a "fake" ALC signal to the
ALC input on the TR-7A and crank the voltage up to where you can run the
TR-7A Mic Gain at 10-11 O'clock and not overdrive the amp. When you
want full output from the TR-7A, just turn off the ALC voltage.

3. Construct your own ALC circuit in the amp using the method in the
L-7 or some other amp with similar circuit topology.

4. You "may" be able to turn the internal ALC pot on the TR-7A to limit
it's maximum output to a level that won't overdrive the amp. Again, no
convenient way to enable full power for stand-alone operation.

[Drakelist] TR7 with modern linear

2008-09-30 Thread John Stringer
Way back in the 80's I used a TR7 with an L7 which ,of course, had ALC.
Everything worked well together.
Now, about 27 years later I have bought a nice TR7A and am trying to use it
with my modern Acom 1000 linear which has no ALC provision.
There is one problem as a result. I have to turn the drive-meaning
microphone gain- down VERY low so the TR7 is operating long before it's own
ALC kicks in. As a result there are considerable output swings to the linear
which often causes it to kick out. Turning down microphone gain even further
helps but then the average output is very low.
I need to be able to operate the TR7 so it's ALC is working whilst giving a
LOT lower drive.
Any suggestions? John. GI3KDR.

  Bill,
Just remember the MN-2000 is a transmatch and not an antenna
tuner. All it really does is match the 50 ohm output impedence of your
transmitter to the impedence it sees at the end of the coax. From the coax
connector on, you still have all the SWR and heat loss due to dissapation.
Good luck.

I was reading through the manual last night and on Page

50 ohm coax with SWR of 5:1 or less.

So I am going to tune the antenna somewhere in the middle
so my SWR will be like 3:1 rather than try to tune almost 6:1.

I dont want any sparks or arcing the the MN-2000 since its
brand new :)

improve your audio, I don't think you'll have a problem.

My experience with a Sherwood 7-SP MK III speech processor installed

Good luck with it.

The DO just pull off. No hidden tricks. I use a couple of thicknesses
of cardboard over the bottom trim strip as a fulcrum for a screwdriver
blade. The trick is to pry slowly and under control. The cardboard is
to spread out the force against the aluminum trim strip so as not to
damage it.

Another old time trick is to work the edge of a handkerchief behind the
knob and gather in such a way as to give you a bigger "handle" to pull on.

John -

Normally, the TR-7 switches both the AC supply to the PS-7 Power Supply
- AND - the +12VDC to all of the transceiver with the exception of the
PA stage. This was done to allow the transceiver to be used on either
AC or DC if mobile use was desired.

So if the external 12 VDC supply is ON, turning the transceiver on or
off with the PWR OFF switch will turn off all but the PA.

The AC part of the PWR OFF switch is connected to Pins 1&3 and Pin 2&4
of the PS7 Control connector (J5) on the TR-7.

There was a mod circulating to remove the AC from the transceiver
cabinet by putting a relay inside the PS-7 and using the relay to
control the PS-7 AC primary.

These switches do fail, and are essentially irreplaceable, due to being
mounted on a dual control. I leave my PWR switches ON, and use an
external power switch. I do this for all my older equipment that has
control mounted power switches just because they are so difficult to
source if they do fail.

I wouldn't just plug in the PS-7 without doing some checking. You can
check the continuity between Pins 1&3 and Pins 2&4 to see if the PWR OFF
switch is still functional. If it is, then you are probably ok.
