If you know of off-the-shelf alternatives, or of homebrew options (LC

hi,
A long time ago I remember reading somewhere that bias voltage could be
reduced so that there was no idle plate current between CW elements - the
purpose being to lengthen the life of the 6JB6 tubes. I remember
that the person who wrote that email pointed out that this would not work
for SSB, but I don't run SSB on my T-4XB so it's not a problem.
I'm just wondering if this holds true or not and if it is advisable to
run the rig that way, without idle plate current between CW elements
instead of the typical 70 mils of plate current.

Thanks,

Re: [drakelist] odd idea

2005-08-06 Thread Mark Gilger

I did not even get into the data part. I have added a data
line switch on the front panel, so no matter which radio I'm switched to,
when I throw the switch, I change from the D-104 input to the data line
input (AFSK) for RTTY or PKS. Works pretty good.
On the speaker. I never implemented the speaker into the switch box. I
run a separate MS-4 on each radio, so they always have a load. I would
suspect if someone got inventive, they could put an 8 ohm load across the
unused speaker outputs from the extra pins on switch.

Great idea to use a computer switch box to switch mics between

Wish I had thought of it. I may use it when I rebuild the shack.
This
could easly expand to handle switching between mics and other
gadgets
like PSK31/SSTV/whatever interfaces, phone patches, processing
devices,
etc.
However
I wouldn't run a speaker feed through it from a radio with a tube
audio
output stage. Bad things can happen when a tube audio output runs
unloaded, and if you're like me, sooner or later you'll turn a rig
on
with the AF gain turned up and the speaker switched to another
rig...

Hello Joe,
Well, I have been using my Drake T4X on AM for some time now, the mods
are listed here
www.wb4hfn.com/DrakeArticles/HiFi_AM_T4X.htm
The pot was a good idea rather than using a fixed resistor as I needed to
adjust it to get it right. Too much and I got a pumping
of audio and output, to little and there was not enough audio
punch. I have it set around 20 watts out when I depress the
microphone ptt Drake does not use the plate modulated scheme of the
older AM rigs, so if you simply put in it in AM mode and talk, you will
get that swing of Am output. This mod does a nice job, though not
alot of output, but the sound is nice and I run it through a linear
amplifier for about 200 watts carrier output. Hope that
helps.

good place to buy such tubes? I once bought tubes from a place in Victoria
BC, but can't remember there name.
I was also thinking of converting the second mixer to a solid state mixer
(relax the need for retubing and perhaps improve performance). Does anyone
have experience with doing that. I would like to use diode ring dbm, but
the impedance's don't match well.Tnx, Bob

I was on the 14.238 group meeting for the first time tonight, and I
really enjoyed it. I'll try to be there as often as possible.
I think it will be rather difficult to run the meeting next Saturday. I
assume the bands will be rather crowded because of CQ WW DX-contest on SSB.

I hope to meet many of you on 14.238.
Thanks and enjoy the week-end!

I think there used to be a 20 meter net some years ago. It would be
interesting to know why it disbanded? Was there a lack of participation,
or what? Anyone know?

I would think there would be a lot of interest, since a good majority of
the US is left out of the current 40 and 80 meter nets. The questions
would be

(1) What freq. on 20 meters?
(2) When? (Probably Saturday afternoon would work best, although it would
be nice to have a weekday net , but then we are back to having it on 40 or
80 due to propagation during the winter months)

(3) Who would volunteer to run it? Or maybe we don't need a person, but
just have a Group meeting?

To bad these nets are so early and on a band that the west coast cannot
participate. The swap net on 75 meters has the same issue. Not workable
from the west cost.

I guess the west is out of luck.
You could start your own nets for the West Coast...if you do, I'll be
happy to list them on the Drakelist web page.

Lee Lighting (a theater lighting supply house) offers their number 172 gel
which is an exact color match to the original Drake filter. It too is
thinner than the Drake stuff, but you have the white diffusion filter to
support it. A 20 x 30 sheet was about $6 a year ago.

The white filter also probably needs to be replaced. The originals tend
to yellow after a while, giving the dial a green cast. The hardware
store For Sale c plastic signs have plenty of white space on them and
most of them are made of a material very similar to the original Drake filter.

Replacing the #47 bulbs with #755 bulbs gives approximately five times the
expected life. They have slightly less light output, and don't
fade/yellow the filters as fast.

Some have replaced the bulbs with LEDs, but I haven't seen a good color
match yet, and they tend to hot spot (bright spot in the center) the dial.

a source of the original Roscolene #853, or if not, the nearest
equivalent gel in one of Rosco's (or other manufacturer's) current range?
Rosco tell me that there is no direct equivalent, but someone else may
know of a satisfactory match?

[drakelist] NEW DRAKE FRONT PANELS

2003-11-21 Thread Mark Gilger

I've been in communications with Dale, AA7XX to try and make some new
front panels up for our drake equipment. Dales email address is
below.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
He's trying to determine what the need is and if it is economically
viable. At this point, could anyone that has a need for a
replacement or spares please contact Dale directly and let him know what
model and how many you might needs. This is not for firm
orders, but just to give him an idea of the viability of this
venture.
If anyone is not aware, Dale has produced replacement MS-4 speaker labels
that are as close to original as possible. I doubt if anyone could tell
the copy from the original. We are hoping for something like this in
front panels.
Please email Dale direct.
Thanks.

Re: [drakelist] Drake on AM--THANKS

2003-11-21 Thread Mark Gilger
Remember when running the t4X with R4? that the carrier will be offset
about 1kc or more. I find it best to go split and use a freq. counter
sniffing the coax line and set the T4X output to match the exact freq. If
you don't some guys will complain about the quality of the signal and
that's strictly because it's off freq.

Hi Alan!

I didn't know you were on this email list. Fancy meeting you here.

I have a Drake T4x transmitter that I am hankering to pull down from the
shelf and try it on AM too. Once I get it set up, maybe you and I could
try to hook up some time on 75 meters.

Most of the PNW AMers meet on 3.870, and start getting on the air about 2
or 3 PM daily. Let me know if you want to set up a schedule some
time. If the T4X doesn't quite work right, I can always use my TR-7 on AM
which is my standard rig right now.

Most PEP reading watt meters for amateur use use sample and hold
circuits usually consisting of an op amp and support circuitry. The cap
idea is not very accurate or mathematically correct for a true PEP report.

There is available thru a source called HI-RES Commnications, Inc., a kit
that can be built and added to the W4 or other meters to allow it to
report PEP output. Go to [EMAIL PROTECTED] for info. I have built and

I have seen references to peak reading W4's and would like to modify mine
to do the same.

I wouldn't think there'd be much to it...just a cap to hold peak voltage
long enough for the meter movement to respond before the voltage decays
away through the meter.
