Re: [Drakelist] Pointer knob lines
Ok guys, it has been quite a while since I posted this so here it is: Best solution I found was to ignore whatever is in the slots now unless it is cracked and dirty, then apply new lines with Pentel fine point correction pen (or any fine point correction pen like PaperMate liquid paper correction pen) and let it dry completely which takes only a couple minutes. Then with a sharp edge piece of plastic scrape off the excess. I did mine 8 years ago and it still looks line brand new. I was thinking of using model enamel and a toothpick, wiping away any excess with qtips. Mike. I use paint pens. They come in several colors and tip widths. I got mine from a local art supply store. Re: [Drakelist] Pointer knob lines
I use a whitening stick avaiable, I believe, from Antique Electronic Supply. You make sure the knob is clean, including the white line area, then you rub the stick over the indentation, wipe off the excess, and there you are! -Original Message- From: m coffey r79b...@gmail.com To: drakelist drakelist@zerobeat.net Sent: Sun, Feb 5, 2012 7:42 pm Subject: [Drakelist] Pointer knob lines What suggestions does the group have on re-whitening the lines on the pointer knobs? Re: [Drakelist] Pointer knob lines
Hi, I use water bsed artist's acrylic paint to fill the engraved lettering on panels, or groove on knobs/ I use a flexible thin pc of neoprene or similar as a squeegee. The paint is about the consistency of ketchup. Wipe with a fairly hard, damp, cloth after it's dried a short time, not too long, practice makes perfect. Easy cleanoff redo as it's water based. You can see some results on some of the SP-600's I've done, somewhere one of them has some details. http://www.boatanchors.org/sp600.htm 73, Al, W8UT www.boatanchors.org www.hammarlund.info There is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats Ratty, to Mole On 2/5/2012 7:40 PM, m coffey wrote: What suggestions does the group have on re-whitening the lines on the pointer knobs? I've used almost exactly that methid with all kinds of knobs and Testors gloss white in the cheap little glass bottles. The old paint usually seems to be quite soft, and can be easily removed with a toothpick and your favorite cleaning solution. I've experimented with masking the groove for the line with Scothc tape, with varying results. 73 -Jim -- Ham Radio NU0C Lincoln, Nebraska, U.S.S.A. I've been using Liquid Paper white out in a ball-point pen package. You squeeze the body of the pen as you roll ball-point along the engraved knob line. Mess it up? No problem. Just start over. Any overage is easily taken away after it dries in about one minute. It looks great, stays bright white and doesn't yellow.
