 Hope that helps

Thank you Claudia. I don't know why I failed to find that.

I'd like to add that, if you have the time and resources and
inclination, your experience with the installation and upgrade
processes themselves is also valuable.

Likewise, a critical reading of the documentation can be very helpful.

So you can generate HTML and PDF from the wiki?

What about older releases? When 1.8 is out, will 1.7 still be
available online in HTML?

BTW all links I found at wiki.duraspace.org and at dspace.org still
point to the docs generated from docbook.

Yes, we can generate all kinds of documents using the Confluence wiki tool.
Older versions are always available. I have
a printed version from 1..3 to the current version in my office. (Although in
print!)

Re: [Dspace-tech] License Compatibility

2010-11-03 Thread Mark H. Wood
As Tim's response may have suggested to you: you really need to ask
your lawyer if you want a defensible answer.

That said, BSD and GPL being what they are, I think it more likely
that there would be an objection on *your* side, since GPL is much more
stringent. That is, you'd have to make certain that *your* license
would allow the distribution you want to make. Unless you are
removing evidence of copyright or claiming endorsement, it's difficult
to violate BSD.

However it's my impression that GPL and BSD are compatible in most
circumstances. See the bit in GPL regarding mere aggregation, for
instance. The main thrust of GPL seems to be that modifications *to
GPLed code* must be shared as the unmodified code was shared. It's not
as infectious as some would claim.

You also need to consider whether you contemplate using GPLv1
(probably not), GPLv2, or GPLv3, or perhaps LGPL.

I would point out that an extension can, arguably should, be
distributed separately. Necessary modifications (such as plugin
points) can be made to existing DSpace code under the license on that
code, and you should be able to distribute the rest under just about
any license you please (assuming your lawyer agrees). Your
contribution to DSpace itself would be only the code required for your
extension to be dropped in.

And, if you decide to offer the whole thing for inclusion in the core
someday, it's my layman's understanding that the owner of a work can
always re-release it under a different license if he finds that
expedient. (Assuming no contractual obligations to the contrary.)

It's a tangle. Talk to your lawyer.

[Dspace-tech] Embedding metadata in PDFs

2010-11-03 Thread Pottinger, Hardy J.
Hi, I was curious if anyone is incorporating a step where you embed metadata
into PDFs submitted to your repositories (or before you batch load them, if
you're doing that)? I'm researching potential tools for doing so (both Doc Info
and XMP metadata), for material that we are batch loading. I feel a bit like
I'm following something down a rabbit hole, with all the reading I've done
today, so I'm hoping that hearing from others, in the specific context of
DSpace-based repository work, will help further direct our research.

I do know that there is work in progress coming from MIT with adding metadata
tags that will help crawlers (specifically the Google Scholar crawler)
associate external metadata with PDF files, which is very welcome. But we're
definitely wanting to ensure that PDFs we load in a batch fashion are as usable
as they can be, and from what we've seen so far, that would include embedding
metadata in the PDFs themselves.

[Dspace-tech] thumbnails restricted if main item is restricted

2010-11-03 Thread Steve Swinsburg
Hi,

We have a situation where some items in a collection are restricted, ie you
need to login to access the full version. However we want the thumbnails and
branded previews to still show up for the general public.

When we run the thumbnail generator, it seems to inherit the permissions from
the main bitstream, which means if the bitstream is protected, the thumbnail
doesn't show up unless you are logged in and have the appropriate permission.

Is this a common situation? We've inherited this instance so it might be a
change made by people before us, but if anyone has addressed this, it would be
great to hear from you.

thanks,
Steve

Re: [Dspace-tech] thumbnails restricted if main item is restricted

2010-11-03 Thread Steve Swinsburg
We've fixed this up with some carefully crafted SQL to update the policies to
the Anonymous group for the bitstreams in the thumbnail bundles, but it would
be interesting to know if this is actually how things are meant to work, ie
inherit the permissions from the parent item when generating the thumbnails.

regards,
Steve
