[HCDX] After 27 years, FEBC shutting down Saipan station for good

After 27 years, FEBC shutting down Saipan station for good
http://www.saipantribune.com/newsstory.aspx?cat=1newsID=112098
By Clarissa David
Reporter

Far East Broadcasting Company general manager Bob Springer, center, talks about
their
plans to decommission their radio station that broadcasts from Saipan for 27
years the
gospel of Jesus Christ, by the end of the year during the Saipan Rotary Club
meeting
yesterday. Looking on is Rotary president Pete Igitol, left, and vice president
Pete Shilling,
right. (Clarissa V. David) Far East Broadcasting Co., a non-profit,
non-denominational
missionary organization that broadcasts the gospel of Jesus Christ to many
parts of Asia, will
decommission its radio station on Saipan by the end of the year, after 27 years
of
broadcasting on island.

Bob Springer, FEBC general manager, attributed their decision to government
deregulation
and advances in communications technology that he said have significantly
reduced the
demand for shortwave broadcasting.

Shortwave broadcasting is a long distance broadcasting mechanism that allows a
radio
station to broadcast up to 4,000 miles.

In the last two and a half years, FEBC has studied the trends in technology in
the audience
listening habits and the conclusion of this exhaustive study has been we should
cease
broadcast from Saipan while continuing shortwave broadcast from our facilities
in the
Philippines, Springer said.

Founded in 1945, FEBC began with a vision of starting a radio station in China
and
constructing programming studios in Shanghai. But with the Nationalist
government's
concern about the Communist takeover, FEBC wasn't given a license to operate a
station
there.

That was sought in the Philippines, have to get property, get a license to
broadcast from the
Philippines into China, said Springer. The first station went on the air just
three months
before China fell to the Communists and it's been broadcasting to China ever
since.

With the ministry's rapid growth, FEBC started broadcasting from Okinawa to
China in 1957
and Korea in1971.

In 1975, FEBC initially came to Saipan to explore the possibilities of
building a station here.
In 1978, FEBC created KSAI to serve the Commonwealth.

While we were operating KSAI in those early years, negotiations went on for
land to build a
shortwave station and in 1981, a lease was signed in the Marpi area to build
the station
where we're located, said Springer, adding that FEBC officially went on air in
1984 with four
transmitters broadcasting to Russia, China, and Southeast Asia.

At the height of its broadcasting efforts, FEBC broadcasted to about 15
different countries in
24 different languages and dialects, including that of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan,
and the Ukraine.

Springer disclosed that they receive tens of thousands of letters every month
from people
responding to the gospel they broadcast.

Having lived on Saipan longer than anywhere else that I've ever lived,
Springer said he
feels sorry to go.

While we've enjoyed the 27 years that we've been able to operate here on
Saipan, the
government and the commercial side of things here on Saipan has been very good
to us and
we've appreciated that. But we can see the time and we know that that's the
thing we need to
do, added Springer. Standard rig : ICOM R75 / 2x16 V / m@h40 heads Sennheiser

The Shortwave Report 08/26/11 Listen Globally!
by Dan Roberts ( outfarpress [at] saber.net )
Thursday Aug 25th, 2011 5:31 PM

A weekly 30 minute review of international news and opinion, recorded from
a shortwave
radio and the internet. With times, frequencies, and websites for listening at
home. 3 files-
HIGHEST QUALITY BROADCAST, regular broadcast, and slow-modem streaming. Free to
rebroadcast. Radio Deutsche-Welle, Radio Havana Cuba, the Voice of Russia, and
NHK
World Radio Japan.

Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (August 26) is up at the website
http://www.outfarpress.com/shortwave.shtml in 3 forms- (new) HIGHEST QUALITY
(128kb)(27MB), broadcast quality (16MB), and quickdownload or streaming form
(6MB)
(28:59) Links at page bottom
(If you have access to Audioport there is a highest quality version posted up
there {27MB}
http://www.audioport.org/index.php?op=producer-infouid=904nav=;;)

This week's show features stories from Radio Deutsche-Welle, Radio Havana Cuba,
the
Voice of Russia, and NHK World Radio Japan..
From GERMANY- Some European economists say that if the 17 Eurozone nations
were to
pool their finances, it would be in much better shape than the US. In Libya the
rebels seems
to have united many different tribes on the way to Tripoli- there is a question
as to how well
they will all get along once a new government begins to form.
From CUBA- It turns out that US and NATO forces had key roles in the Libyan
rebels push
into Tripoli- and they were aided by covert forces from France, Britain, and
some East
European countries. A massive national strike in Chile has united trade union
workers with
the students who have been protesting for weeks. The Foreign Ministers from the
Union of
South American Nations have gathered in Argentina to find ways to mitigate the
impact of the
global financial disaster. Bolivian Assembly Socialist members voted to expel
the US Agency
for International Development for conspiring against the local government.
From RUSSIA- An analysis of the protests taking place at the White House to
demand that
President Obama put an end to the proposed tar sands oil pipeline from Alberta
Canada to oil
refineries on the Gulf Coast of Texas- which many say is the largest carbon
bomb in North
America.
From JAPAN- Prime Minister Kan says that he and his cabinet will resign next
week if his bill
on renewable energy passes through the Diet. The Japanese government has a plan
to
reduce the radiation level in Fukushima Prefecture by 50% within 2 years. Three
quarters of
the nuclear reactors in Japan are now out of service. NHK produced a daily
segment last
week on the various types of renewable energy being successfully used around
the planet.
This segment covers the use of a combination of solar panels and hydroelectric
generators in
Laos.
There is an article about the Shortwave Report by Cassandra Roos on line -
http://www.campusprogress.org/soundvision/780/big-stories-shortwaves

I was interviewed for an informative weekly radio show Mediageek, available at
http://radio.mediageek.net

All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to
rebroadcast, please notify
me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please
mention the website if
you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection,
try the streaming
version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a
high-speed
internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection,
download the
smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3
player application
(RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
NEW TIME SLOT on KZYX! This program will be aired on Sunday afternoon at 4pm
(PDST)
on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org
There are several other streams that work better- http://www.freakradio.org
Freak Radio
Santa Cruz now streams this program on Friday at 9:00am.(PDST)
NEWLY CORRECTED!!! The Shortwave Report may be downloaded as a podcast from
feed://radio.indymedia.org/en/podcast?keys=shortwave++

I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I
am still wondering
how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program
weekly- any ideas
are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to
donate for
production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that
have
donated! No Guilt! (maybe a little)

[HCDX] Solar activity increases odds of disruptions on Earth

Solar activity increases odds of disruptions on Earth
http://www.times-standard.com/localnews/ci_18706106
Suzanne Bohan/Contra Costa Times
Posted: 08/18/2011 02:20:17 AM PDT

The sun has entered a cycle of increasingly powerful flares and eruptions,
catapulting to
Earth high-energy particles capable of wreaking havoc on electronic and
communication
systems that support our high-tech civilization.

We're seeing so much more now, compared with the last few years, said Ben
Burress, an
astronomer with the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland. He pointed to a
satellite
image that showed flares and magnetic storms roiling the sun's surface.

And when you have them happening five times a day, there's a greater chance of
one
actually hitting us, he said.

The powerful solar storms shift the spectacular northern lights as far south as
Florida and
Texas, but they also punch holes in the Earth's protective magnetic field,
which can cause
health problems as well as disrupt communications. On Tuesday, radiation from a
solar flare
briefly interfered with shortwave radio signals, an easily affected
high-frequency wave.

The disruptions are coming because the sun is entering a decadelong phase that
scientists
call solar maximum. In the midst of this phase, the sun's magnetic field
flips north to south,
contributing to the solar storms that NASA says should peak in 2013 or 2014.

Solar flares typically affect radio signals on the daylight side of the planet,
said Joseph
Kunches, a space scientist at the Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder,
Colo.

The real danger comes when
Advertisement
a solar storm ejects a chunk of the corona -- the sun's outermost layer --
toward the Earth. It
hurtles through space as a huge electrically charged cloud with its own
magnetic field.
Scientists call it a coronal mass ejection.

That cloud of plasma is thrown off the sun like a bowling ball, and sometimes
we're at the
other end of the bowling alley and it hits us, Kunches said.

When that happens, the Earth's magnetic field buckles and resulting magnetic
storms can
set off electrical surges that damage transformers and other equipment in
electrical grids.

In 1989, a solar storm triggered the collapse of Canada's Hydro-Quebec power
grid, cutting
power to 6 million people for as much as nine hours. That storm also knocked
out a
transformer at a New Jersey power plant, along with 200 other smaller
disruptions in the
North American power grid, according to a 2008 National Academy of Sciences
report on
space weather.

Other solar storm damage cited in the report:

* The 2005 diversion of 26 United Airlines flights, due to the loss of
shortwave radio
communication over the North Pole. In that region, pilots rely on shortwave
radio since
satellites orbiting the equator are out of range.

* A 30-hour shutdown of a Federal Aviation Administration global positioning
system in 2003.

* The 1994 blackout of two Canadian communications satellites, disrupting
service
nationwide. The first recovered in a few hours, but the second was out for six
months and
cost nearly $70 million to repair.

But the granddaddy of them all, Kunches said, was an 1859 solar event. It
blanketed the
planet with stunning red, green and purple auroras so bright that people could
read by them
at night, according to a NASA account. The auroras, usually seen only in the
upper northern
latitudes, reached as far south as Hawaii and El Salvador. One early low-tech
effect was
disruption of telegraph systems worldwide.

A solar superstorm struck again in 1921 that scientists estimate was 10 times
more
powerful than the 1989 storm that disabled the Canadian grid.

Those storms struck the pre-electronic Earth. A repeat of it in modern times
would be a
space weather Katrina, according to the Academy of Sciences report. It
estimates a severe
solar storm could cause $1 trillion to $2 trillion in losses the first year,
and take four to 10
years to fully recover from.

Scientists such as Kunches spend their days monitoring solar storms and other
space
weather through an array of satellites, and space weather forecasting is
constantly
advancing.

Solar flares and ejections travel the 93 million miles to the Earth in as
quickly as a day, but
more typically three to four days, Kunches said. Scientists can track them,
though without
being able to precisely detail their severity. He likened it to hurricane
predictions.

Forecasting enabled electrical utilities to gird against the large 2003 solar
storm, minimizing
damage.

Mother Nature's going to do what she wants, but we're paying attention,
Kunches said.

http://www.amprovincia.com.ar/

sponsor our second series featuring hundreds of Australian Radio

WVUV SAMOA PIONEER VISITS

The last of the AFRS radio WWII callsigns lives on in American Samoa
as WVUV-FM..and Homer Willess, who set up the station way back in the
1940s will be making a visit back to the island shortly with his
family. We're grateful to Larry Fuss [WVUV-FM owner] and his local
team for making Homer welcome. It's not often you get to the meet the
station founder! Check out Homer's romantic Samoan story today at
www.radioheritage.com'WVUV Radio Romance'

SALUTE OUR SPONSORS
*Apex Car Rentals*

Apex Rental Cars [www.apexrentals.co.nz] have supported us for
several years, helping our Kiwi Radio Campaign and are recognized as
the only high level Patron status sponsor on our Roll of Honor.

Starting out as a small operation in Christchurch, they now have
the largest modern fleet of rental cars in New Zealand, a new branch
in Brisbane [Australia], and tick all the boxes with innovative use
of technology to make renting real easy.

Phil and his team have battled through the recent Christchurch
earthquakes...they lost their city office.so support a good local
company. Good prices, all inclusive simple to understand deals, and
from personal experience, friendly, efficient and very nice folks to
know.

For your next rental car hire in New Zealand [or Brisbane], we highly
recommend Apex Car Rentals [www.apexrentals.co.nz] and tell them
'Dave Jo at the Radio Heritage Foundation sent us' when booking!

HELPING OTHERS

We get many calls for advice..and we try and help where we can,
although we could do much more with our collections digitized. Recent
examples include genealogy research looking for a ventriloquist who
performed on 5AD [Adelaide, Australia] in the 1940's, recommendations
for the future of public radio in the Mariana Islands, details of
KGER [Long Beach CA] broadcasts in the 1930s and looking for an old
piano teacher who sang on Australia's ABC radio in the 1950's.

Want some personal research done? A donation of US$25 covers an hour
[annual supporters get a 25% discount on our rates]just write
with your question today to i...@radioheritage.net and we'll do our
best to get you sorted.

EUROPEAN CRISIS RESOLVED!

hundreds of items from his European AM Longwave history project -
features, old station lists, a lot of audio of rare broadcasts,
station IDs and lots of images - because he no longer had time to
maintain this immense collection. It now has a new home at
www.radioheritage.com. We'll be adding to this
material

** ANGUILLA. 11775, Aug 25 at 1142, PMS is back, having been absent 22.4 hours
earlier. Why is this so sporadic? Hurricane Irene is well past by now, but I
wonder if the newly-refurbished curtain antenna sustained any damage (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake August 25, before 1200:

** ALBANIA. R. Tirana now appears to be completely off the air. One of the two
Shijak transmitters had been down since the end of July, meaning e.g. the
1430-1500 English to NAm was missing from 13625 (and still silent Aug 26), but
the evening broadcasts were still heard on 7425. Now, Aug 26 at 0257 I heard
nothing there (tho it might have just signed off), so checked again at 0330 for
the final repeat and 7425 was still missing. Wolfgang Büschel noted earlier on
August 25 he was not hearing any Tirana transmissions. Let`s hope they can soon
fix whatever the problem is! (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ANGUILLA [and non]. 6090, CB missing again, Aug 26 at 0540; however, could
hear RHC in English, leapfrog of 6010 over 6050; also when mid-attenuated, but
in this case may have been receiver overload more than spurious transmission
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ANTARCTICA. Another weekly update on LRA36: still missing from 15476, Friday
Aug 26 at 1313 check, as well as almost weekdaily chex sometime during its
former 1230-1500 span (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. 1, Aug 26 at 1257, beeps of higher pitch mixing with WWV/WWVH.
1259 began Morse IDs on MCW over and over as BPM, i.e. China`s WWV at Lintong
(Mt. Li), Shaanxi. Too bad on pp 668-669, WRTH 2011 does not show details such
as ID times, in this case during minutes :29 and :59. Even in the
standard-frequency arena, the ChiCom brazenly QRM US broadcasts, while the
Russians are kind enough to offset their timesignals -4 kHz (Glenn Hauser, OK,
DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CHINA. Firedrake August 26, after 1300:
15290, good at 1314, with flutter
16980, good at 1314, with flutter; no others found

Before 1400:
16980, good at 1349
15520, fair at 1351 [usually around here on frequencies ending -5]
14720, fair at 1351
13970, very good at 1353
13850, very good at 1353 eclipsing weak WWCR 13845
12025, very poor at 1353 under CNR1 jammer; none in 11`s, 10`s
7970, just barely audible at 1355
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** INDIA [and non]. 9870, Aug 26 at 1255 was enjoying the music from AIR VBS,
only fair reception from Bengaluru at 35 degrees, but after 1300 ruined by CRI
English, which HFCC shows co-channel at 13-16, 200 degrees from Xi`an, to SE
Asia, take that! Also listed on 9870 is DRM from Moscow at 13-18, but not heard
here (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** ITALY [non]. Tnx to info from Ivo Ivanov, I alerted DXLD to a new Arabic
broadcast from IRRS, he heard last Friday Aug 19 at 1400-1415 on 11910, but
what is it, religious or political? Still not mentioned on the IRRS schedule.
Just barely audible signal here at 1408 Aug 26, but Kai Ludwig in Germany heard
website mentioned before closing, http://arabwomantoday.com and Andrea Lawendel
found more by Googling:

** U S A. WEWN is off the air August 26; seems every August they close down for
a few days of maintenance, but there is nothing about this on their frequency
schedule page http://www.ewtn.com/radio/freq.htm

Aug 26 at 1250, nothing on 7555, 12050 or 13580. After 1300 nothing on 11550
which normally takes over from 7555. 1710 nothing on scheduled 15610, 13830 or
11550. Victims of its squishy spurs plus and minus 9 and 18 kHz from the
English-language transmitter get a temporary respite. Previous maintenance
periods have failed to deal with this problem (nor squeal on one of the Spanish
transmitters), so we don`t expect any fix this time either. Speaking of fixes,

[HCDX] Nigeria, International Community Rattled by U.N. Bombing@

Nigeria, International Community Rattled by U.N. Bombing

A car bomber broke through two gates and detonated his explosives in front of a
U.N.
building in Nigeria's capital Abuja, killing at least 18 people Friday.

The radical Muslim group Boko Haram claimed responsibility in a phone call to
the BBC's
Hausa language shortwave radio service in northern Nigeria -- the same way it
had taken
credit for attacks in the past.

The northern-based Boko Haram, whose name in English means Western education
is
forbidden, is seeking to establish strict Sharia law in the country.

Friday's attack was the first on a U.N. -- or any international -- building by
the group, which
usually targets Nigerian government installations or security forces, said
Comfort Ero,
International Crisis Group's Africa program director, who is based in Nairobi,
Kenya. Boko
Haram's past attacks include the June bombing of police headquarters in Abuja,
which killed
six people.

President Obama called Friday's attack horrific and cowardly in a statement.
An attack on
Nigerian and international public servants demonstrates the bankruptcy of the
ideology that
led to this heinous action, he said.

The group's possible links to al-Qaida, further suspected after the attack on a
Western-based
and international body, has put it in the orbit of U.S. interests. Nigeria also
supplies the
United States with 10 percent of its oil imports, and the United States is its
largest customer
of crude oil.

In July, the government of President Goodluck Jonathan formed a negotiating
committee to
deal with Boko Haram's grievances and the bombing attacks. The government also
has said
it would investigate reports of abuses by the army in fighting the Islamist
group.

But despite these moves, the government's crackdown on the group intensified,
and the
threat from Boko Haram also grew in the past few months, Ero said.

Nigeria's long-standing tensions between the mainly Muslim north and mostly
Christian south
ignited in violent protests in April after President Jonathan, a Christian, was
elected and the
candidate favored by many Muslims lost.

Deep-seated economic and employment inequalities are further destabilizing the
country of
155 million, said Ero. Particularly where Boko Haram hails from, the north
suffers from a
potent mix of economic malaise and community-based distribution of resources.

All of these factors are churning in Nigeria as attacks are now taking an
international bent,
she said.Standard rig : ICOM R75 / 2x16 V / m@h40 heads Sennheiser
