Manuel, thank you very much for your info! I was trying it on two KiwiSDR
receivers in Brazil (Sao Paulo area) and the signal on 3365kHz was very
good. Here in the middle of Europe there was only a very weak carrier and no
modulation. In Brazil there was no signal of Radio Cultura de Araraquara on
790kHz, so it seems that the transmitter was really switched off for good,
as it was announced in January. In fact there is a weak signal of another
Radio Cultura on 790 kHz during the day in Sao Paulo area, but it seems to
be from Taubat? which is not far away from Sao Paulo.

As usual, a good signal from All India Radio's General Overseas Service into
NB this afternoon (14 February) at 21:45 UTC on 9445 kHz even indoors on a
portable with its whip antenna. Pleasant Indian subcontinent music. AIR is a
reliable SW broadcaster. Let's hope it stays that way for a few more years.

[HCDX] Glenn Hauser logs February 14-15, 2020

2020-02-14 Thread Glenn Hauser via Hard-Core-DX
** CANADA. Each DX log a potential learning experience, I say. And
making NDB beeps much more enlivening are replies like this:

``Re: [WOR] Webequie 355 MCW --- Webequie is an interesting place,
Glenn. I spent a few weeks there in mid-winter in the late 70s as a
senior medical student. Only way in and out was via plane. My
clinic/residence then had no power, and only wood heat. Besides the
Hudson's Bay store manager, I was the only non-Ojibway person there.
Very cold, in the order of -20 to -40 deg C. The Northern Lights were
spectacular. I admit to getting cabin fever there after a few weeks,
and was eager to move on after that! 73, Walt Salmaniw`` (Glenn

`Sonido Cubano` multi-tone music. 13740-AM is still on with dead air.
Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15140, Feb 14 at 1555, RHC is S9+20/30 and distorted as
usual, while // 15230 is weaker S9/+10 but OK modulation. Something`s
always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15369.236, Feb 14 at 2139, RHC Brazuguese off-frequency for
the fourth day, always measured within a few Hz of here. // 11880 also
Brazuguese and undermodulated; 15140 already off. Something`s always
wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

announcement gives a correct time and frequency if not for the current
airing. Stronger than usual at S9+20 VG, into IS; and not on after

Also confirmed UT Sat Feb 15 at 0130 on WRMIs, checked via Rockport
only: 7780 VG, 5850 G, 5010 fair with low audible het, and traces of
music, but not // 5040 RHC which might have leapfrogged here over
5025. Madagascar? Not supposed to be on this early but is
off-frequency when heard about 5009.9; or India: is it off-frequency?
At 0200* when WRMI goes off 5010, Rockport is getting some very weak

Then at 0203 I get this reception report from ``ORA ET LABORA``, a.k.a

theme and keeps on ``rambling``, first with info for techies, so I
keep listening: SuperStation will return to air on Monday, exact time
unknown, because the tube socket has been replaced --- make that
repaired --- with very fine careful machining to the millimeter. After
it had failed for the third time. Now the 500,000 watts should run
``flawlessly``. It`s the output tube to the transmitter which with
that much power is ceramic, not solid-state. It looks like an inverted
wedding cake, with fins on the side which are for cooling and also
connecting. The ring had been arcing. Is only 900 volts at 1.5 amp.
Original design was ``right on the edge, not taking into account the
what-ifs``. Also explained that AW is still taking time off because of
all the stress with the SS problems.

Pirate Joe does not get around to introducing himself until 0114, then
other topics: plugging for takers on 6160 while all time is available,
before it fills up as it eventually will; especially pirates should
get on it. He can`t take email but gives his own phone number, so
someone calls in about reception problems nearby for his own station

Hi Rudolf,
do you think 3365 kHz will continue for the sports reports?

Rudolf Grimm kirjoitti 27.1.2020 klo 15:46:

Hi Karel,
Radio Cultura 3365 kHz uses the 90 m signals on this time each year, when the
city's soccer team (FC Ferroviaria) plays the annual state soccer championship.
A strong signal was heard here in São Bernardo (close to São Paulo) yesterday.
The 90 m signal is kept in the air only during the football match. The signal
is then deactivated.
Also, the announcer informed on the air that Radio Cultura de Araraquara at 790
kHz will be migrating to FM on January 30 (in a few days!). It is understood
that the 90 meter signal will probably also be able to close permanently on the
same day. 73, Rudolf Grimm

I was wondering if it was Radio Cultura B what I heard last night on 3365kHz
with a sudden close down shortly after midnight UTC (0003 ?). The signal was
very weak here in the middle of Europe so I could only guess it was in

What does Rudolf say - if he was listening too? Thanks.

[HCDX] DX TIP: KCFJ-AM 570 Alturas, CA

2020-02-14 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
The station had apparently at one point run China Radio International and a
website indicates it ran talk programming at some point, which is what
several online directories still list it as. However, I have logged it for
the first time here in Laramie, WY twice in the last week and it's running
none of that

KCFJ is running the Westwood One Radio Network satellite fed "America's
Best Music" format. The best way to describe it is soft adult oldies...some
lighter softer oldies, not adult standards and some newer softer music
along with newer artists doing older music. You'll hear two voices on the
station, a female voice.. that is what comes from the network. She sounds a
bit older and slightly classy and laidback. Often times, the network will
fire their end of the liner but the local liner that should play from the
station doesn't What you will hear sometimes is a male voice that makes
some reference to "reaching out to you" and specifically mentions KCFJ...
or "ever wonder where all the good music has gone you've found KCFJ AM
570".

KCFJ DOES havecommercial breaks and they'll often be a combination of
national/regional/statewide spots with some locals mixed in.. I heard a
spot for True Value of Alturas voiced by an older man.

I worked as program director for a station that ran the same format so I am
familiar with it. The "America's Best Music" format has no DJ's

*I thought this might be useful to someone who may log something and have
no clue what they'r hearing.*

[HCDX] I came SOO close to logging myself when DXing!

2020-02-14 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Darnit!!! I am so close to DXin'g myself on Thursday February 13th! I could
hear classic country music on 1350khz, just enough to match it to the
stream of KDIO 1350 Ortonville, MN with 38 Watts at 535 miles (My QTH is
Laramie, WY) but it's not nearly good enough to consider a logging.. Had
some music for several minutes that faded out before I did my talk break
and kinda sorta faded up again after the break is over, with more music

(I'm on KDIO and quite a few other stations overnight 12am to 6am
eastern/11pm to 5am central, etc.. AM's include WTCH 960, WTBC 1230, KGNO
1370 and WFLW 1360)

Re: [HCDX] Radio Cultura de Araraquara on air, heard via SDR Kiwi remote receiver in Sao Paulo

2020-02-14 Thread Karel Honzík
Manuel, thank you very much for your info! I was trying it on two KiwiSDR
receivers in Brazil (Sao Paulo area) and the signal on 3365kHz was very
good. Here in the middle of Europe there was only a very weak carrier and no
modulation. In Brazil there was no signal of Radio Cultura de Araraquara on
790kHz, so it seems that the transmitter was really switched off for good,
as it was announced in January. In fact there is a weak signal of another
Radio Cultura on 790 kHz during the day in Sao Paulo area, but it seems to
be from Taubaté which is not far away from Sao Paulo.
