I feel I got lucky with the two QSO's I made on 40 and 20 CW. I caught them both times when they showed up initially calling CQ and worked them before they had a pileup. Otherwise, when I've been able to hear them at all I've had no succes in getting a QSO in the midst of the pileups. I actually haven't heard them very often when they were supposed to be on a given band and frequency. Tonight I heard nothing from them on 28 MHz from a club station with a tribander at 120 ft. They were barely audible on 18 MHz later on. I have noticed with quite a few Pacific island DXpeditions in the past (not just with AH3D) that an operator will work mostly JA's on a low band when he has only a couple hours of opening left for USA. Maybe I'm off base here, but it seems to me that the fair thing to do would be to work North and South American stations until daylight shuts down the path to USA, and then work JA's and other nighttime paths still available until the DXpedition's local sunrise. Does that make sense? Likewise, I'd expect a DXpedition to work EU on the low bands until EU has their sunrise, then switch over to the Americas. I don't usually complain either, but this DXpedition seemed to be tougher to work than I expected. Maybe it was a combination of three operators trying to stretch themselves to the limit in an attempt to make everyone happy, mixed in with rather poor geomagnetic conditions. I'm hoping we do get an occasional opportunity to work KH3 in the future. 73, Zack W9SZ Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org
Re: [DX-CHAT] [DX-NEWS] difficult to work AH3D?
Evening Charles, K4VUD: Fortunately I found just the reverse of your bad luck. My timing must have been just right on the AH3D fellows. I worked them on all bands, 160-10 Meters, and never spent more than 5 minutes on any band 80-10 Meters. It took me two days on 160. Hi My timing and luck must have been just right on this DXpedition. In my opinion three operators have done an exceptional job with the lack of sleep they have had. Good luck with them on the bands you need them on !! 73s, Gary, K4MQG (South Carolina) - Original Message - From: "Charles Harpole" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, February 02, 2003 9:19 PM Subject: [DX-NEWS] difficult to work AH3D? > Is it just me or did others have an inordinately difficult time trying to > work AH3D ? Re: [DX-CHAT] [DX-NEWS] difficult to work AH3D?
I did notice, when they first came on the air, that their 30 meter split was odd. It went from +3 to +5 to +7 to +10 to +12... and so on. However, in their defense, they've had a LOT of people calling them, and it only takes one or two lids to disrupt things. I did work them very early in the morning on the 30th on 80 CW. Their split at that time was about +7, and my log shows they were on 3506 & I got them on 3513. I've also been listening on 20, 17, 15, 12 & 10, and while I haven't broken thru the pileups on any of those bands yet, or they've been listening to EU when the band was open here, the splits were pretty reasonable -- usually 10 kHz range listening up. The cluster showed a 15 kHz or so split on 20 CW tonite, but I can't hear them, so I don't know how accurate that really is. Still got tonite and tomorrow, so don't give up! 73, ron wn3vaw 'Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.' --Hanlon's Razor - Original Message - From: "Charles Harpole" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, February 02, 2003 9:19 PM Subject: [DX-NEWS] difficult to work AH3D? Is it just me or did others have an inordinately difficult time trying to work AH3D ? I could not get into their split patterns, I was always on at the time when they were interminably calling some other number a long way from 4 only to switch to 5 out of turn, and when they went to EU or JA, then just shut off your American rig 'cause it is over for you for the night. I have never complained abt a DX effort before because I do believe, to some extent, that it is the DX's show to run. However, as Roger Rabbit said, Plleeasse. Maybe I am the Lone Ranger on this one?
