Dicky Bird, G4ZU, was THE big gun in my hometown of Croydon,
Surrey, while I was a high school kid and SWL growing up there. I
will never forget his superb aristocratic voice perfectly enunciating
George Four Zanzibar United. All that an SWL had to do was to stay
on his frequency, and reel in the rare ones.
Surprisingly I never met him. As a senior manager in UK Post Office
engineering, he was much too far above my humble station for that!
Initially I was surprised that he left Britain to retire in
southwestern France as F6IDC, but as by chance my career made me very
familiar with that country, I knew exactly why he chose that
beautiful, warm part of Europe.
