[DX-CHAT] Any budding poets out there?

2006-03-06 Thread Ron Notarius WN3VAW
As some of you may remember, I edit my club's newsletter. For several
years, tried to run an annual humor article in the April issue, and tried
to do so as an ode to the old DX Hoggery Poetry Depriciation Society
columns that Rod W9BRD ran (almost every May, I know) in QST. (BTW, Rod is
alive, well as of the last time I wrote him, married to a VE living way up
north... and still uses the same mill to correspond with. But I digress)

For a variety of reasons, I haven't run one of these for the last few years,
but recent events have tempted me once again. But I need your help.

First off, I need limericks. Sorry, that is the accepted format for these.
No haiku, to iambic pentameter, no free verse. Pretty much if you're going
to do it, you've got to do it right.

Second, they need to be ham related, and somewhat funny. Most of the
traditional (and best) ones involve a rotten operator and how s/he gets
their comeuppance.

Third, and I wish I didn't have to say this, they can't be personal or nasty
in spirit. I've gotten some submissions in the past that were basically
spit and bile aimed at an individual, or a company, or an organization, or a
dxpedition. Can't and won't run them. This isn't the place for sour
grapes, but to poke a little fun at ourselves.

Finally, those of you who remember the original columns know that in most
cases, the person reciting the limerick at the DXHPDS meeting also met with
some misfortune, often due to a rettysnitch or wouf hong or other
semi-lethal contraption. Any limericks used will be credited to the author
in this way, so if you have a prefered demise, just let me know.

Deadline will be the Monday after the CQ WPX SSB. If I have enough, it will
be a fun article to write. (I need about a half dozen or so).

Thanks in advance for all your help!

[DX-CHAT] Still more from old QST's

2006-03-06 Thread Zack Widup

I hope some of you are enjoying these as much as I have reading them again
after all these years.

From April 1970 QST How's DX? by Rod Newkirk, W9BRD:

And now in response to irrepressible demand (our own) we close out the
DX Test questionnaire series instigated by reminiscences of W2GP. Having
already covered subject matter of forty years ago, then some suggested
material for contemporary use, we now provide samples of interrogatory
transmissions for forty years hence, ARRL's International/Intergalactic DX
Competition in the year 2010 ...

D-14 What is your QSO-per-second DX contest average?

M-4 Are your front feet higher than your back feet?

E-32 Do you like the new mint-flavored QSO tapes?

B-24 Does your joy light blink red or green when you hook a new one?

H-7 How do you keep people from fiddling with your feedback loops?

Z-2 Do magnetic storms ever give you colds and fever?

R-9 Are chrome sideburns the style in your country?

N-18 Do you have any painfully tight knobs?

D-23 Have you ever been (a) scratched, or (b) dented?

G-8 Do you know any three-footed transceivers?

I-35 How would you avoid collecting fungus in the tropics?

Y-17 Do you rather enjoy your trips to the factory?

R-14 Does your present owner keep you dusted and well-polished?

C-20 Do you eject QSL's during or after QSO's?

Y-19 How many operators can you test consecutively?

M-15 What type of lid really turns you off?

Obviously, Rod and others failed to predict the advent of computers and
internet but may not be that far off!

Notably missing from April 1970 QST was an article by the infamous Mr.
Larson E. Rapp, WIOU. I don't know when the famous Rapper stopped
writing articles for April issues of QST. Does anyone know if the true
identity of the Rappster was ever revealed?

The May QST How's DX? column featured the annual DXHPDS meeting (that's
DX Hoggery and Poetry Depreciation Society, to any young squirts.) How I
miss that!

[DX-CHAT] More old QST's

2006-03-06 Thread Zack Widup

Some more prizes from old QST's I've been perusing:

From March 1970 How's DX? by Rod Newkirk, W9BRD:

Anyone who has the least familiarity with wizened editorial minds knows
perfectly well what the subject of this month's intro will be. Dern
tootin', an up-dated sample of those questions transmitted in the first
ARRL DX Contest some forty years ago (last month's How's). Oh, just in
case somebody wants to try it that way again in the interest of more
meaningful QSO's or something. Might even bring us back closer to our
craft ...

C-13 How many scratches are on your transceiver?

L-3 Are you insured against loose knobs?

D-31 How high are the front feet on your transceiver?

A-23 Are your chrome strips panel-mount or breadboard?

G-6 Do you know who scratched your transceiver?

Y-1 How many dB over S9 can your S-meter read?

Q-8 Do your house lights blink when you cough?

H-34 Do your neighbors' house lights blink when you cough?

M-17 How do you level uneven transceiver feet?

C-22 Do you get good factory service on loose knobs?

F-7 What is the best amount of chrome on a linear?

X-16 Is your keyer paddle bright red or bright green?

Q-3 Does your mic cord reach the refrigerator?

B-19 Do you ever use spaces with your new keyer?

X-18 How many mics can you test consecutively?

L-14 Does the family pop your VOX from the kitchen?

Oh, enough on the technical. Most of us are said to be appliance ops
anyway, and we wouldn't want to discourage contest participation by being
overly scientific. How about something along this line to fit other
vital topics of the day?

E-5 Scratches aside, what do you hate most about ham radio?

W-16 Did you have difficulty financing your station?

Z-12 What's the resale value of an unscratched '68 Zupersparker?

A-7 How many clubs and societies have you resigned from?

C-38 Which radio regulation is easiest to ignore?

J-1 How do you chase others off your favorite frequency?

Say, this is a FUN game! ...

* - * - * - *

Still more to come ...

[DX-CHAT] Old QST's

2006-03-06 Thread Zack Widup

I've been looking at some old QST's I had stashed away. Some great stuff
therein ...

From February 1970 How's DX? by Rod Newkirk, W9BRD:

Here we go again - your annual ARRL DX Test coming up! Rare operating
sport for one and all whether you go for score or just poke around a bit
to swap 73 with some overseas friends.

The world-wide wireless frolic now has forty years of tradition behind it.
W2GP fondly recalls the very first. 'Did better in that contest than any
since,' he says. No. 1 ran a couple weeks and required formal
registration of intended participation. The League's Communications
Department issued serial numbers to entrants, along with several sheets of
questions of sentence length. QSO's in that one were really QSO's!

The specified queries, which had to be transmitted along with said
serials, are interesting in themselves. They etch an image of 1920's
hamdom. A few examples show what DX men of yore had on their minds:

D-14 How many binding posts do you have on your receiver?

G-17 Is your transmitter panel-mounted or breadboard?

L-22 Do you use Vernier dials and what ratio are they?

Z-11 Please describe the insulators in your antenna.

I-21 How do you control oscillation in your receiver?

U-33 Please describe grid-leak and condenser in your receiver.

W-11 Do you believe in radio frequency amplification for shortwaves?

Y-13 What is the best number of tubes to use in shortwave receivers?

H-22 Do you use C battery on either receiver or transmitter?

M-24 How many plates are in your antenna condenser, and what metal?

X-36 Please give all meter readings in your transmitter.

Those jobs were fairly simple. Others got more complex. How would you
like to have to get rogers from Asia on THESE propositions, even with 1970
equipment and technique? ...

E-15 Name a delegate of your country who attended the International
Radiotelegraph Conference.

Q-28 Was your country represented by a delegate at the 1927 International
Radiotelegraph Conference?

E-16 What do you think of the results of the International Radiotelegraph
Conference held at Washington, D.C. in 1927?

Some things never change, though. A good number of the recommended test
transmissions concern topics of interest today as then, such as

I-19 What wavelength do you consider best for working the U.S.?

M-25 Are you troubled with power leaks at your station?

C-16 What do you think of work on or near ten meters?

J-23 What is the proper way to use CQ?

Gee, no questions on sex, religion or politics. Possibly hams of those
days were more concerned with their craft. ...

* - * - * - *

More to come ...

Ac! I'm mortified! :'( (Not that it was all that great shakes to begin
with.) =D Too bad one of the moderators doesn't have a name that rhymes with
ane or ame. Maybe Urbane? (For Urb, maybe... just a thought ... OK, I'll
stop thinking...)

Zack, I think the gist of the comments we get back are gonna be along the
lines, Don't give up your day jobs.. :-D

Well, it was fun for a few moments. Now back to some rare DX. Maybe California
or New York...

Always 73!

[DX-CHAT] Anyone traveling to VU4 Hamfest?

2006-03-06 Thread Charles Harpole

Hello traveling DXers

I am searching for anyone who is planning to attend the Andaman Island VU4
Hamfest in April.

I want to try to book a flight from Bangkok directly to Port Blair r/t which
is certainly an easier route for me (because I live in Bangkok) and maybe
also for other travelers who may be using Bangkok as one stop on their trip
to Port Blair. It may be possible to reserve a charter flight BKK/Port
Blair/BKK if enough people want this route.

Yes, I know the usual flights are from Chennai India or other India city to
Port Blair, but I want to skip the trip to India mainland and then back to
Andaman if possible.

Any help is appreciated. de HS0ZCW/VU3CHE
