Re: [DX-CHAT] DX Cluster help/suggestion

It certainly would be handy if all spots were submitted in a standard way,
perhaps a 'form' for manual input, as then, the computer processing of spots
would be made a lot easier. I think a lot more programs would use spot-data
if only it was not so varied in format. 'Standards' are slowly creeping into
logging - maybe 'spots' will be next.

Hi,

This is N5PHT, Gary, writing from North Texas. I once before suggested this
idea and it really didn't catch on - maybe I did not try it long enough and
would really like to try again if there is some support.

The DX spots could be made in a uniform way that would really give helpful
info in a short space. For example, if I spot a DX station and in the info
area I put:

579.W5.D.10

That would mean I am cpy the dx 579 and I am in W5 land and I am using a
dipole (D) and it is up 10 meters. It would be easy to devise a simple
uniform reporting system.

For example, the antenna:

B2- beam (with the number designation being the number of elements)
D- diopole
V- vertical

Completely true, Steve. However, I'd regard
spot-processing as an additional function for those who want it, so all I'm
saying is that if there *are* going to be spots, a consistent format would be
handy.

Hi Tim - There is something oddly backwards. I've invested
years in assembling my station, antennas and in developing my listening and
operating techniques. If I can hear the DX, I can usually work it in far less
time than it would take to format a spot let alone a multi-field spot.
Frequency and call is all I need. I know of a very accomplished DXer at the HR
Top who never uses tenths in his spots. He gets you close but you still have
to do a little tuning - perish the thought.I'd rather be
operating than managing data!Cheers 73, Steve

Don't forget that the 'Global
Overlay Mapper' shows all the IOTA reference numbers on its suite of 34 maps. As
far as I am aware, its the only set of IOTA maps available. Take a look at the
demo on my website.

Assunto: [DX-CHAT] Need IOTA Info YJ0VB
10SEP03

I believe Murphy has visited my shack and
hidden my IOTA directory with ALL of my entries! Until I can work out
a deal with ole Murph, wonder if someone could help with a little
info?

This morning (9SEP), YJ0VB very active on 40
and 30 and was very reluctant to give any info, however one spot did note he
was "on a new IOTA". Finally he gave the name of the island, MALEKULA
ISLAND", but since I don't have my IOTA book, I am unable to come to any
conclusions on the status of his operation today.

Anybody help?

I have a feeling that "Vlad" is doing some
island hopping and not making any differentiation between one island and the
other, when in the same DXCC country. For example I think in one case
he was on perhaps 3 different IOTA's but the call remained the same.
Maybe when he returns home he will publish some sort of "diary" and let us
all catch up on exactly where he was and when.

Thanks any help.

With so many map enthusiasts raising their heads to answer this question,
now might be a good time to mention a New Yahoo Group for Map Enthusiasts -
'Radio Map Users'.

Though primarily created for users of the Global Overlay Mapping system,
this group also discusses any other aspects of Maps and Map Making that are
of interest to Radio Amateurs, SWLs, or professionals working in the Radio
or Mapping industry.

Share your hints and tips, compare mapping programs and resources, tell
members about new maps you have noticed.

If you are interested in Radio and Maps, you are very welcome to visit or
join. Please pass this message on to anyone whom you think would also be
interested in joining.

 Hi Larry,

I use http://www.topozone.com quite a bit. After I've located my general
area, I usually select the features 1:25000 and LARGE at the top of the
map. At the bottom you can choose to display UTM coordinates, decimal
degrees or deg/min/sec. I usually use the latter. At the bottom of the
page you can read the latitude and longitude to the second as you move the
cursor around. You just have to find your exact QTH on the map and put
 the cursor on it.

I often use this for hilltopping microwave operations when I need a
 6-character grid square or even a 12-character grid square. It's just a
matter of finding the hilltop on the map. The topo elevation contours
 make that simple.

For anyone planning a bombing run, my home QTH is at 40 deg 06 min 19 sec
 N, 88 deg 11 min 45 sec W. :-)

This is probably a long shot, but did anyone that attended Dayton this
year
see the guy in the flea market that was selling lamps that were made from
 old tubes?
