[DX-CHAT] Peter I

2006-02-20 Thread Charlie, W0YG
Kudus to the Peter I guys. Their operation was first class. It shows that
K4UEE and K0IR are excellent organizers and planners. They did it and they
did it right.

I hate to say this as the flames will probably roll in but before
criticizing what is wrong, I suggest you walk a mile in their shoes. I know
when I am out on a DXpedition, and I have been on quite a few but nothing
near as exotic as Peter I nor will I ever do one like that, what seems
obvious on this end is not at all the case on the other end, the DXpedition
end. They call the shots. It isn't going to be a case of their money,
their equipment, their time, their sweat, their frostbite and your rules.
It just doesn't work that way.

Let the Peter I guys bask in the spotlight of an excellent DXpedition.
Bravo Zulu!

Mal:

I am amazed you can sit here and tell them over there what they should have
done. It isn't in the cards for that to happen. However you are certainly
free to voice your opinion as I am mine.

The bottom line is those guys gave lots of folks new ones on lots of bands.
I hope you worked them everywhere you needed them.

Charlie what you and many guys seemed to miss in my original posting was
this sentence:
Yes they did a 'bang-up' job, and yes they did it under horrible,
grueling, conditions.
I criticized one small segment of the xpedition, a part that rightfully or
wrongfully, deserved criticism. I did not condemn the entire operation. The
last time I looked The Constitution still allows me, and you, the right to
express our opinions.
I have been on the other side of the pileups and pileups most people reading
this can ever comprehend. I was lucky and was in a warm tropical climate. If
nothing else I have paid all my 'dues' to earn the right to be a little bit
critical.

Hi Charlie, Mal (et al).

Constructive comments such as mine and others obviously can't affect
an operation that's finished, but what of the next guys who decide to
spend their time and money to give The Deserving a New One? I can
tell you for sure that if my next radio trip were to someplace more
exotic than C6 in a couple of weeks, I'd sure as heck want every bit
of information I could lay my hands on that would mean more Q's in my
log and more happy campers on the big end of the pile.

It may be a case of someone looking through these messages as they
plan a trip and realizing that hey, yeah...that makes sense and
badda-bing, next time they activate Upper Slobovia for the masses,
perhaps the pile on 40 (or wherever) won't be as bad.

When a group of dedicated adventurers decides to spend more than a
half a million dollars on a trip like this, I'm guessing that they
probably want to be as successful as they can be, with the most Q's
and orderly piles, etc. To not analyze their successes (many) and one
or two relatively small shortcomings is a mistake, IMHO. There are a
lot of top-ten locations still in need of a visit, and I know if I
were going to BS7, VU7, VU4, KP1, etc, I'd want to look at what needs
to be done to get that rare a place into as many logbooks as possible.

I will say, though, it was great to hear an operation that was done
so well. They did a million things right for the most part and we
should rightfully thank them for their hard work. To overlook the
couple of weak spots and just congratulate the successes alone I
think isn't being honest. It would likewise be wrong to say a
DXpedition was a poor because of one or two factors ignoring all the good.

Umm, I worked 3y0x on 80 meters.

There... we're back on topic!

I'm right behind you on this, Urb. On the lists which I
own/moderate, the free speech, censorship, and
constitutional rights issues come up on occasion. I
disabuse the complainants' notion that these lists are run as a
democracy, especially if they spout profanity, politics, religion, or
personal attacks. As Dictator For Life (albeit benevolent) in my
groups, I have on rare occasion exercised MY right to delete and/or
ban offending members with no rights of appeal.

In actuality, the constitution gives you the right to express
yourself without fear of government involvement (censorship,
imprisonment, etc)

It does give the individual the right to express themselves on
private property IE: you may hand out anti-government petitions
on a public street, but you may not hand them out standing on my
property. I have the right to refuse to allow you to so this.

Anyway, I didn't work the 3Y on 80 meters (just to stay on topic)

and that's all I have to say about that
