[DX-CHAT] TO4E Criticisms

2003-11-27 Thread Tony Martin W4FOA

It saddens me to read all of the negative comments
flying around regarding the current TO4E dxpedition. None of us really
understand the environment in which the team is operating, nor do we know the
difficulties they may be experiencing, be it health, weather or technical.
They have only been on Europa for a couple of days, and as I understand it, they
are still installing antennas, etc...so I must say, the early, very critical
comments against the team are not only unkind but they are
unwarranted.

A more serious way to look at it is how it makes
you, thecriticizer look, and even more importantly to me, how it puts
theUSA ham in a very negative light. This is ThanksgivingDay
in the USA, a time to be thankful for just how blessed we are here in the
USA. Rather than throw stones at others, why don't you who want to be so
critical, take a moment and be thankful that you are able to participate in our
wonderful hobby, be thankful that you have a radio and antenna, be thankful for
family and friends, and be happy for the freedoms we all take for
granted.

The TO4E team, as I understand it, will be there
until mid December and chances are that before that time we will all have had
our chance to work them.

Just remember, the negative comments one makes here
in the USA on the international DX Clusters, are seen all over the
world.

I wish you and your families a wonderful
Thanksgiving Day and a blessed holiday season.

Just my 2 cents..

Tony, W4FOA

I agree with Tony! He was nice about it. It makes
me ashamed for others that make such comments. I couldn't believe my eyes
when I looked at the comments on the cluster this morning. The reason these guys
went on this trip is to provide you with a contact on as many bands as
possible! Give them a chance. I think the CW operators I have worked
are doing a great job!
How many of you jerks that are complaining have been on a
dxpedition? Spent your money, took time off from work, put your life in
danger, etc?? Eat your turkey, be thankful and shut up!

Re: [DX-CHAT] TO4E Criticisms

2003-11-27 Thread Steve Rutledge
It is apparently the instant gratification thing that many Americans
seem to suffer from these days. They want it right now! Of course, we
have been fortunate and haven't had to endure any significant hardships
for several generations so that may be the reason.

Personally, with all but five worked, I dread the day when I have them
all. And I would, with the exception of VU7, had it not been for Uncle
Sam making other plans for me. I need TO4E for a new one overall. My
entire antenna system is collapsed on my tower while a major repair
takes place. Hopefully this will be finished this weekend. In the
meantime, I'm listening on 30! I'll admit I am a little nervous.

Personally, I absolutely enjoy getting in the pile-ups and competing
with the rest of the deserving. Thank you for being there and
operating as professionals.

I recall when YA came on in the early 90s. I didn't own an amp. I must
have called them several thousand times over a period of nearly a week.
I finally made it on 15 meters. And then there was the Banaba
operation. I only had a vertical. I was getting up every morning at
about 3a in MI and attempting to work them on 20 CW. I finally made
it. When I got the card, there was a yellow post it note attached.
It said, last CW QSO in log.

Now that is FUN!
