[DX-NEWS] IRC's in Australia

2002-11-27 Thread Mike, VK4DX
Some time ago someone here raised a question about postage costs in
Australia. Some claimed Australia Post is asking for two IRC's for
standard letter, this is completely wrong.

I usually buy 10-20 AU$1.65 stamps and that lasts me for a while. The
GS's and IRC's I receive from others I usually put together with my QSL
requests so they never see aus. post office. But, today I found myself
short of everything so I went to the Post office and here are the results:

[ For the reference US$ 1.00 = AU$ 1.78 or AU$ 1.00 = US$ 0.56 ]

AIR MAIL letter to JA and ZL costs AU$ 1.10 (US$ 0.62)
AIR MAIL letter elsewhere costs AU$ 1.65 (US$ 0.92), including to the
middle of nowhere - VQ9, I just sent one today

So, 1 GS will do the job no matter where you are.

1 IRC covers standard AIR MAIL letter to anywhere in the world.
1 IRC bought at Australia Post costs AU$ 2.50 (US$ 1.40) which is a
rip-off.

So, if someone asks you for 2 GS or 2 IRC - well, you know were to tell
him to go to :-)

[DX-NEWS] P5/4L4FN

2002-11-27 Thread Aurélio da Costa
2002 November 25
From Ed today

Dear all,

Yes, real unfortunate thing happened but, this is the case where and when -
I can do nothing. Believe me, I was trying to keep up the P5 as long as
possible and I've managed to run it little bit more than one year but, the
end came unexpectedly and now we all have to accept it as final QRT of
P5/4L4FN operation. I'm absolutely sure that there is no way back to it due
to several reasons, including recent changes in political life of N. Korea.
I've been just lucky to have such a chance and happy to make at least small
part of HAM community as a owners of P5/4L4FN qsl card. But, lets keep it in
mind that life moves further, things are changing, sometimes dramatically
and may be some years after, another P5/x card will see the world. Of
course I'm going to keep my rig with me wherever I go and be in touch.

For the final, many thanks to all HAM's worldwide, you all made my life
much easier and better, and my deepest appreciation for all your support.
Wish you all - best of luck in our hobby and have a good hunting !

My best 73, remain with hope to meet you on a band sometime later, from some
other GOOD spot!

de Ed

[DX-NEWS] CY0MM Still QRV

2002-11-27 Thread Ron Notarius WN3VAW
Just spoke with the CY0MM group on 15 a few minutes ago, much to my pleasant
surprised, and asked if
they were going to do any 17 this AM before they left.

The Op (no, I didn't get his name but he knew mine!) told me that they HAD
everything packed up and ready to go, and were then informed they're not
leaving today, maybe tomorrow (I presume no boat due to weather?). They
were in the process of re-erecting some verticals; they were on 12 15 at
that moment (1410 Z), 10 meters later, and they will DEFINITELY be on 40
tonite as he could see that vertical back up.

Those who still need them, you've got another chance or two!

73, ron wn3vaw

[DX-NEWS] ARLP049 Propagation de K7VVV

2002-11-27 Thread W1AW
SB PROP @ ARL $ARLP049
ARLP049 Propagation de K7VVV

ZCZC AP49
QST de W1AW
Propagation Forecast Bulletin 49 ARLP049
From Tad Cook, K7VVV
Seattle, WA November 27, 2002
To all radio amateurs

SB PROP ARL ARLP049
ARLP049 Propagation de K7VVV

This is a shortened propagation bulletin due to the Thanksgiving
holiday. The solar and geomagnetic data normally in this bulletin
should appear Monday, December 2 in Propagation Forecast Bulletin
ARLP050.

Active geomagnetic conditions plagued the ARRL Phone Sweepstakes,
although participants tell me that Sunday improved over Saturday.
Sunspot counts and solar flux declined quite markedly, with Monday's
solar flux of 137 the lowest since October 2.

On Sunday a coronal mass ejection erupted, and this could cause some
disruption over the next few days. A cloud of energy swept past
earth at 2150z on Tuesday and met a south-tilting interplanetary
magnetic field, indicating more geomagnetic instability to come.

Currently the predicted planetary A index for Wednesday through
Saturday is 20, 15, 15 and 12. Solar flux will likely rise again,
with predicted flux values of 145, 150, 155 and 160 for the same
period. Solar flux is expected to rise to just shy of 200 by
mid-December.
