Sounds like you put your contribution in your envelope only. I seem to
recall that contributors were served first.

RE: [DX-NEWS] 6O0X

2002-05-11 Thread Garry Shapiro

The disallowed operation was Baldur's, from Glorioso. He
thought/hoped/presumed his CEPT license would be good enough, as Glorioso is
French. Upon leaving the island on which he had operated, his boat was
pursued by pirates.

The answer is to work first and worry later, but I have a very
 nice fold out
glossy card from a 6O in Somaliland a few years ago that wasn't
 good for the
same reason. License was issued by Somaliland government, not Somali
government, so you can take your chances. I thought I read during
 the past week
that another of his operations was disallowed for the lack of a
 landing permit.
I may have him confused with another op, but those things happen.

RE: [DX-NEWS] Merelda at VP6DI

2002-03-23 Thread Garry Shapiro

We should not confuse her home-call (Pitcairn) operation with this
one---different paperwork, perhaps?

But I think N4KG is right---I recall hearing her on 17 CW (logged 1523Z, 21
Mar) and thinking OK, she does not do just 12m Her style is also
unmistakable.

As the man said, WFWL. But---an operation as different as this one
provokes a lot of speculation from the unwashed (me, too).

Garry, NI6T

On Friday when I worked Meralda on 12 Meter SSB I asked her when would she
be on 17 Meters. She personally told me her license permitted
 operation only
 on 12 Meters.
I'm just reporting her comments to me. WFWL as always.
 Have fun in the pileups.
   Gary, K4MQG

I have personally worked Meralda on 30M, 20M cw ssb, 15M ssb,
  and 10M ssb...plus working her on 17M and 12 M while at VP6DI...
so quite obvious her license permits her to operate all bands...and
I have qsl cards from her for proof.
  Ray...K6VX

Are you SURE? I've heard her on 17M also,
mostly around 17-19Z, working JA and LP EU
and a few lucky USA guys. Her QSO 'style'
   is unique to her.

   Tom N4KG

Merelda is ONLY licensed to operate on 12 Meters FWIW...

RE: [DX-NEWS] Ducie Schedule - Addendum

2002-03-15 Thread Garry Shapiro

0700Z is the middle of the night. I doubt very much that they will set foot
on the island until well after sunrise, which is around 1440Z. Add a guess
for how long it will take to get basic survival stuff ashore, and then set
up a station.

Garry, NI6T

They left Pitcairn at 01:00Z on Mar.15.
So they should reach Ducie around 07:00Z
 on Mar.16(SAT).

Kan said that it would not take long before
they start QRVing on 14.195MHz after they
 arrive on the island.

I also hear this signal in the SF Bay Area from mid-morning into the
afternoon. Using the nulls on my pattern, the approximate direction is right
over the North Pole.

 Hi Werner:

The offending signal at my QTH on the west coast (Vancouver Island) is S8
and certainly seems to be coming over the pole from Europe, bearing 30
 degrees from here.

From notes from my parents (ah7g and nh7fy) it sounds like the Midway
Phoenix company that has been running the island's infrastructure is
leaving effective 1 March. This essentially closes down the island
except for the Fish and Wildlife service. All planes have been
canceled, stores and accommodations are closed, and all the company
people are packing to leave. Sounds like access will be much harder in
the future as there will be no services available at the airstrip.

Re: [DXR] OT editorial

2001-09-13 Thread Garry Shapiro

It was Admiral Yamamoto himself, who planned the attack because he was
ordered to do so, but who, having served in Washington as Naval Attache, knew
Americans very well. When junior officers offered congratulations as reports
of sunken U.S. battleships came in, Yamamoto, knowing the carriers had
escaped, said:

I fear we have only awakened a sleeping giant, and filled him with a
terrible rage.

Three and a half years later, his country lay in ruins. Yamamoto was shot
down by a P38 near Rabaul.

Re: [DXR] Palmyra Atoll Article

2001-03-25 Thread Garry Shapiro

Brian et al:

Well, it is radio-related, actually.

The Kingman Reef/Palmyra DX Group was a participant in the purchase of
Palmyra, to the extent that we sent team members down there last year to
assist The Nature Conservancy in various ways, primarily in setting up
ground-to-air HF support and ground-to-ground VHF support, and in providing
medical backup (N4BQW) for some of the groups of potential donors that TNC
flew down there. The iniitial QRV of Chuck, N4BQW/KH5, and the subsequent
three-month operation of KH6ND/KH5, who logged 27,000 QSO's from Palmyra, were
the direct results of this commitment, along with the brief, precursor
operation on Kingman by N4BQW.

These operations established a relationship with The Nature Conservancy that
smoothed our way through Palmyra to Kingman Reef in October, for the K5K
operation that logged 81,000 QSO's.

The team stopped briefly at Palmyra, on its way to and in returning from
Kingman. We had a brief glimpse of this magnificent tropical paradise, and
most of our team operated a bit with /KH5 callsigns before proceeding to
Kingman. Anyone attending Visalia, Dayton, Friedrichshaven, the LYNX
convention, the Northwest DX Convention, and perhaps other, more local
meetings, will be able to enjoy this episode in the planned presentations.

$30M was essentially the purchase price, but more money was raised, and is
being raised, to do the things TNC needs to do to restore most of the atoll to
pristine (i.e. pre-WWII) condition and to install the improvements on the main
islet, which will host future eco-tourists. This is a world-class destination
for saltwater flyfishing, diving, birding and just general wildlife tourism. I
believe this is the largest purchase TNC has ever made, and celebrated the
organization's 50th anniversary in a big way.

By the way, the guy swinging on the rope into the lagoon in the National
Geographic spread was, I believe, the island's cook.

Since our progress and plans wee announced regularly in the DX reflectors and
publications, I am surprised that you were not aware of it.

Garry, NI6T

One thing I didn't know, before reading the article, was the entire atoll
