Title:
  Notifications don't have sound

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
A fresh install of 19.10 does not have sound for new incoming
notifications. Using the notify-send or alert CLIs don't produce sound
  either.

System sounds level is at 100%. All application types in the
notification settings have Sound Alerts enabled.

I've experienced this on 3 separate machines:
  - A newer AMD 3700x machine using USB audio
  - Older Intel 5th gen using USB audio
  - 2018 Huawei Matebook X Pro with both built-in speakers and USB audio

It makes the system difficult to use when relying on important
notifications from messaging or email applications for example when
they don't produce sound, especially on multi-monitor setups where the
notification may be missed, or I'm turned away momentarily.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1826053] Re: Notify send is unreadable

2019-04-29 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
notify-send issues signals that can be presented by any software that
listens for them. The software displaying notifications in your second
screenshot appears to be gnome-shell. gnome-shell also displays the
dialog in your first screenshot.

However, since the bug is affecting only parts of individual text
characters, and only in a VM, it’s probably not a problem in gnome-shell
but rather in the particular VM software you’re using.

  Synchronous notifications briefly steal focus

Status in notify-osd package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
It appears synchronous notifications (at least those for volume and
brightness) briefly steal focus when they appear. This is quite
problematic for games and some other applications that pause as soon
as they lose focus. The focus stealing does not happen with normal,
  asynchronous notifications.

Here's a quick Python program to reproduce this:

  #!/usr/bin/python
  import gtk
  import time
  def cb (wid, ev):
evtime = time.strftime ("%H:%M:%S", time.localtime())
print ("%s: Lost focus!" % evtime)
  win = gtk.Window()
  win.connect ("focus-out-event", cb)
  win.show_all()
  gtk.main()

You could also just start playing Quadrapassel, then adjust your volume :)

  Expected:
  * when using a mailto: URL (see bug #1351222) URL, the user should be asked
which app to open (and cache the response optionally?)

  Current:
  * not sure what would happen ;)

  Design resolution _

Case 1: If no email client is installed and a user clicks on a 'mail
to' link, the user should be prompted to download the Dekko app.

Case 2: If the user has Dekko installed, then clicking on the 'mail
to' link should open the Dekko client --> compose mail screen to the
  'mail to' address.

Case 3: If the user has Dekko and Gmail installed, the 'mail to' link
by default should open in the Dekko client. However, the user can
change their mail client preferences in system settings.

Case 4: If the user has Gmail and another mail client installed, the
'mail to' link should default to the first client that was installed
on their device (which would be the default mail client preference in
system settings - this can be changed by the user via system
  settings).

  Notes:
  1. Wherever the user has not actively changed a mail client preference and
Dekko is installed on their device, the default 'mail to' client should be
Dekko.
  2. When clicking on a 'mail to' link, the user's expectation is to have this
link open in a relevant client (unless it is case 1), therefore this should be
the case and any mail preference choices the user can perform via system
settings rather than being presented with multiple choice options of which
client to open the URL in.

  : "Whenever the URL dispatcher
is called on to open an address that multiple apps have registered
for, it should open a “Use App” dialog, with a centered grid of
labelled buttons with the icon for each applicable app, followed by a
  “Cancel” button."

[Dx-packages] [Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2017-10-06 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Colter, I addressed your use case in my 2009-10-02 comment: to
reiterate, you can’t reliably use an asynchronous notification API to
give synchronous feedback on events like volume/brightness change,
because your notification might be queued behind dozens of others. If it
happens to work with notification-daemon, that’s roughly analogous to a
Web page that works only with Internet Explorer: an interesting quirk,
but of little consequence, because most people don’t use that software
any more. As for the notify-send help text, as I wrote above on
2015-02-06, I fixed the text in bug 533631.

Date and time are the two pieces of information that are logically the

I understand that it deserves a bigger space than a simple space

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1607182] Re: Month calendar in the datetime pull-down makes it longer than krillin's screen

2016-08-01 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
This is one of the reasons that I omitted the calendar from the phone
menu design in the first place. (The other reason is that on a phone, a
calendar in a full-screen menu has little benefit compared to just
switching to the calendar app; both completely cover whatever other app
you’re using.)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1587367] Re: Brightness toggle fakes brightness changes

2016-07-06 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Bug 1564342 seems to be unrelated: that is about “the rest of the
screen”, that is, the part outside the menu, on a tablet or PC where the
indicator doesn’t take up the whole screen. Your problem here seems to
be that on a phone, there is no “rest of the screen” — the screen is
covered by a black menu where brightness changes make little visible
difference.

Possible solutions include:
a. Nothing — the change in brightness of the text is enough.
b. Remove the brightness slider from the indicator menu.
c. Make indicator menus not black.
d. Make indicator menus full-screen only if they contain at least a screenful
of stuff, which this one doesn’t.
e. Make this particular menu not full-screen, as a special case.

I would go for (d), but I guess this is up to Paty.

In Android, this is solved by making this screen transparent so the

  Expected Result:
Screen brightness changed from upper quick settings should work the same as

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1363015] Re: App icons require shaping at every callsite

2016-05-27 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Eighteen months later, new cases have appeared where app icons are
incorrectly rendered with unrounded corners: indicator-messages and
indicator-sound.

Meanwhile, bug 1449295 is another example of the harm of not
implementing this: engineers are trying to remember all the places that
render app icons, so that they can make transparent app icon backgrounds
opaque in all of those places. That’s a waste of time, and odds are at
least one callsite will be forgotten. If app icons were a toolkit
element, fixing that element would fix the problem everywhere.

Status in notify-osd package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
In list items, showing an app icon in the correct Ubuntu shape requires
shaping it when you are using it: ListItem.Standard{IconFrame: True}.

That property is set to "True" by default, but it's not obvious why it
should be, and list items aren't the only place that app icons get
  used.

The result is that several times now, app updates have ended up without the
appropriate frame:
  - in the System Settings "Updates" list (bug 1354478)
  - in the "Notifications" screen
  - in the Launcher the frame is unintentionally different (bug 1332119).

Conversely, non-app icons have ended up *with* the frame by mistake:
  - "Display language" (bug 1288866)
  - "Orientation Lock" (bug 1365450)
  - Ubuntu updates (bug 1367136).

In notification bubbles, the opposite applies -- you have to set a hint to
use an *unshaped* icon: notify_notification_set_hint_string(m_notification,
"x-canonical-non-shaped-icon", "true").

Predictably, this has resulted in cases of icons having frames when they
shouldn't:
  - Wi-Fi network authentication (bug 1346904)
  - alarms (bug 1346925)
  - Remove Account (bug 1350282).

On the API design quality scale, both of these are roughly "Read the
implementation and you'll get it right." Worse, they have opposite
  defaults.

I suggest that the toolkit move all the way up to "It's impossible to
get wrong", by always shaping an icon when it is an app icon, and
never otherwise. Whether an icon is an app icon could (I assume) be
  detected by its path.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1470080] Re: Broken icon in indicator when iphone attached

2016-05-23 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Apparently for iPhones, we know what their charge level is, but we don’t
know whether they are charging. I didn’t know that was (and don’t
understand why it is) a possibility, so I hadn’t considered that case in
the design. Specification updated: if we know the charge level, but not
that it’s charging, we should use the same icons as when it’s
discharging.

Separately, we shouldn’t show a device in the menu title when we don’t
know whether it’s charging or discharging, if for other things we *do*
know whether they’re charging or discharging.
So that’s a bug, but fixing it
wouldn’t fix the missing icon by itself, just make it less prominent. It
would still appear in the title if, for example, you connect an iPhone
to a battery-less desktop PC.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1583099] Re: [phone] Brightness slider should show value set by user or auto-brightness, not screen's actual brightness.

2016-05-19 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
The same problem happens with the brightness slider in System Settings.
So this is not a problem with indicator-power, it is a problem with the
shell.

I don’t think it’s healthy for the brightness slider to have to know
about, and ignore, Unity altering the system brightness for locking
purposes — because that might not be the only reason it ever happens.
For example, we might decide that if you switch to an external display,
your phone’s display should fade out as the external display fades in.
If so, it’s unlikely that anyone would remember to add special code to
the brightness slider to ignore that too.

I think a better solution would be for Unity to dim the display using
something that isn’t the user brightness setting. The total brightness
should equal the brightness setting × that other factor that Unity
occasionally alters from 100%.

Sadi, which device is shown in the menu title is unrelated to this bug,
because the same icon is supposed to be shown for the device inside the
menu as well. If the problem occurs inside the menu as well, it’s
probably a missing or misreferenced icon; if it doesn’t, it’s probably
an inconsistency in the indicator code.

(If anyone is wondering how to take a screenshot of the menu: take a
whole-screen screenshot with a five-second delay, then open the menu
during the delay.)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1577414] Re: Adding time zones to locations of indicator-datetime

2016-05-12 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
There are two separate issues here: choosing the time zone as an item in
the first place, and displaying it in the menu once it’s chosen.

For choosing the time zone as an item, you can already do that with UTC,
because we made sure “UTC” is special-cased as something you can search
for. In theory, we could do the same with all the time zone names, and
first-letter abbreviations of all the time zone names: no dialog, just
make them options in the menu.

Right now, though, there is nothing in Ubuntu that knows the names or
abbreviations of any other time zones — because the time zone database
we use (tzdata) doesn’t contain them. It contains information about all
the daylight saving changes for a zone called “America/New_York”, going
back to 1918 … but it can’t tell you that when in daylight saving, the
“America/New_York” zone is called EDT. We would have to start
maintaining a parallel database that mapped tzdata zone names, in and
out of daylight saving, to their common abbreviations. Common names
would be even harder because they’d need translating into multiple
languages.

For displaying the time zone in the menu once it’s chosen, multiple time
zones with the same abbreviation is not actually a problem. As shown in
this screenshot, it’s already the case that you can add multiple cities
with the same name and they aren’t distinguished. We trust that either
you won’t do that, or that you’ll know which is which. The same could be
true for time zone abbreviations.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1577414] Re: Adding time zones to locations of indicator-datetime

2016-05-09 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
I see two issues with using time zone abbreviations like this.

First, I think many more people know the name of a city in their time
zone, than know the name of their time zone. For example, I lived in
London for several years before learning that daylight savings time is
called BST.

Second, there are many time zones that have the same abbreviation. For
example, there are two time zones abbreviated “ACT”, two “ADT”, two
“AMST”, two “AMT”, and two “AST”, and those are just the ones starting
with A.

Notify On Screen Display is a fancy flickery alert method that pops up
on top of inconvenient places on the Desktop in order to display
messages to the user. When ordered to display a message:

Laptop battery low
Approximately 19 minutes remaining (12.4%)

it now fails to draw a smooth, or transparent background and now
overwrites the message with thin orange marker lines lines and a big
  green blob containing:

normal - report incorrect urgency?

Ideally, the 'n' in "normal" should be capitalised and the incorrect
typographical use of a hyphen be replaced with an emdash.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1557716] Re: Support 'phone' profile for indicator-session

2016-03-19 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
indicator-session doesn’t have a phone profile because I never intended it to
appear on a phone. It consists mostly of things that are irrelevant on a phone.
A. The overall UI is simpler than a PC, so “Help” is less useful.
B. The phone was a single-user device, so “Switch Account” and the account list
were non sequiturs.
C. “Log Out” and “Suspend” are replaced by the app lifecycle: apps save state
across user sessions and power sessions respectively.
D. “Lock” and “Shut Down” are mostly redundant because it is much easier to get
to a phone’s equivalent hardware UI than a PC’s equivalent hardware UI.
E. “Restart” is replaced by not having any functions that require restart but
don’t prompt for it.

That left only “About”, which was demoted to System Settings, and
“System Settings”, which was put in the Launcher by default.

Since then, the main thing that’s changed has been (B), the plan to
introduce multiple user accounts. Realistically, though, ~99% of devices
will remain single-user, so it would be inappropriate to introduce an
indicator just for that. “Switch Account…” could easily be a button in a
unified session dialog instead.

If Ubuntu Touch ever becomes sophisticated enough to do the tasks that
people use Ubuntu on PCs for, then (A) will have changed, but even that
would be a weak reason to introduce an indicator menu.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 390508] Re: notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout parameter

2016-02-17 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
I guess “Did I miss something?” was a rhetorical question, since
Nicholas did not subscribe to receive any answer. But he missed three
things. First, as I wrote on 2015-02-06, I fixed the man page myself
(bug 533631). Trivial bug fixes are seldom backported. Second, I did not
cite the possibility of using other software to “justify [the] design
decision”, merely to disprove the ludicrous claim of “taking away my
freedom”. And third, as I wrote on 2009-10-02, a global configuration
option would not involve the timeout parameter at all. Adding one is
part of bug 420583.

Calendar Notifications need to be overhauled:
-- Calendar Notifications are displayed for too brief a period and should
conform to the same timing as other notifications.

-- Calendar Notifications are not currently appearing in the
notification tray within indicators and should be.

-- Calendar Notification title is misleading ('Alarm') and should make
clear that the notification relates to a calendar event ('Event') and
  not a alarm-clock event.

-- Calendar Notification's should NOT override silent mode (unlike
clock-alarms) although the notification should still be displayed,
appear in the notification within indicators and cause the device to
vibrate (if enabled) - This is accepted/common behaviour for
notifications of this type on mobile.

go of at 10:00. If you get a call at the same time, then obviously the
call gets the highest priority and the alarm or calendar audible
notification is suppressed by the system. So a phone user can actually
  miss the event.

This can be resolved by turning the alarm icon shown in the indicator
to blue similar to messages to indicate that an alarm or event was
  missed by the user.

  ——— UX Comment ———

I can think of two possibilities for the resolution of this bug:

  1) We change the alarm icon in the status bar for alarm-missed icon
  (https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/0BzbnWoHmYF3ablBITVByRnpzdEk

  2) Once the incoming call event has finished or the user has acted on
it by answering the call, we fire a notification bubble (as well as
it’s associated auditory feedback) to communicate the missed event. If
the user doesn’t act on the incoming call event, the alarm goes off
  after incoming call timeout.

--> My recommendation would be to use a combination of both.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1529499] Re: Allow fast switching between timezones

2016-01-21 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
"In the control center i can add multiple timezones" suggests that this
is about the PC, not the phone. Is that correct, Kai? (Ubuntu on phones
makes it more important than ever that bug reports mention an exact
Ubuntu version.)

Choosing an indicator menu item is more convenient than diving into
System Settings, but it still counts as "set the new timezone manually".
Automatic time zone changing would be based on location. So if this was
about the phone, it would be a duplicate of bug 1377087. The PC design
needs to converge in including that option.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1515821] Re: Recurring Evolution events not shown as coming events in clock's menu

2016-01-19 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
I did not consider this case. It would be extremely rare, since the list
should include only events for the selected day, and events hardly ever
repeat more than once a day.

But as long as the overall maximum number of events is adhered to, I
don't think it's a problem that the list might include multiple
occurrences of the same event. On the contrary, if they are omitted, you
might not realize that some other event clashes with a recurrence.

Specification updated.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1508461] Re: Power-Cog should turn red when restart is need to complete updates

2016-01-17 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1180860 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1180860

You identify two issues. First, "popping up a window does NOT provide a
persistent state of notice". That's true in that you can dismiss the
dialog without restarting. But if you do, per spec, it will come back a
day later, just as it would if you hadn't installed the updates at all.

Second, that the current design "breaks the logical connection and
Unity-design of displaying system related events in the Upper-Right
corner of the panel". But there is no such connection or design. And
even if there was, that would not be an excuse for shipping designs that
don't work.

In particular, there is no evidence that "The power-cog turning red
alerts the user's attention to the event" for a reasonable proportion of
users. On the contrary, when use testing was done on systems that
happened to need system updates, nobody noticed the updates icon in the
panel. That's the reason we changed the notification of updates
available from an indicator icon to a dialog in 2009. It's implausible
that the appearance of a new icon would fail to notify people that
updates were available, but that changing the color of an existing
indicator icon -- even less of a change -- would succeed in notifying
people that their system needed restarting.

It did use to be the case that the power menu title went red when
updates required a restart, and that the menu contained an item "Restart
to Complete Updates". But there was never any evidence that that worked,
either, and it was removed in 2012 along with printers and webcams and
other stuff that didn't make sense in that menu.

Restarting the OS to complete the installation of updates is such an
event. The power-cog turning red alerts the user's attention to the
event. And when the user clicks the red Power-Cog icon, an entry
should exist that reads: "restart to complete updates"

The current method of popping up a window does NOT provide a
persistent state of notice and often results in the user forgetting to
restart when an opportune time exists to do such a thing. It also
breaks the logical connection and Unity-design of displaying system
related events in the Upper-Right corner of the top-panel. "Restart"
and "Shutdown" are items in the power-cog menu and this is the
intuitive place for users to take action on such an event.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1473428] Re: battery indicator does not update after charge [meizu ubuntu phone]

2015-12-13 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
You can usually tell whether anyone is looking into a bug by referring
to the "Assigned to" cells at the top of the bug report.

Many things cause bugs to be neglected. One cause is poor-quality bug
reports. For example, this report does not contain clear steps to
reproduce the bug, making it much less interesting for developers.
Another cause is reports filed under the wrong component. For example,
none of the three screenshots attached show the battery indicator
looking "weird" or showing any text at all. However, all of them show
the System Settings "Battery" screen open, which suggests that you may
be confusing the two. The indicator is the little battery icon at the
top of the screen, and the black menu that you can open by dragging down
from it.

If the battery indicator and System Settings "Battery" screen say the
same thing, and they're both wrong, then the problem isn't with either
of them, it's with the data they're receiving, so please report a bug on
the upower package. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upower

If the battery indicator is wrong but System Settings is right, please
report a bug on indicator-power. If System Settings is wrong but the
indicator is right (as seems to be the case in two of those
screenshots), report a bug on ubuntu-system-settings.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1478321] Re: Weird battery values bq Aquaris 4.5

2015-11-30 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
The screenshot is not of indicator-power, it is of System Settings.

If the value is jumping in the System Settings graph, it can't be a bug
in indicator-power.

The question then is whether it is a problem in upower, which provides
the charging information, or in System Settings, which graphs the
information provided.

If the battery indicator shows the same percentage, the problem is not
in System Settings, it is in upower.

This is a big problem, because if one sees that the phone has still

It is not the first time that this happens to me and others, and I

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1502684] Re: Enable Seconds on the Clock

2015-11-09 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
I think this bug report is Invalid. Whether you want seconds shown in a
clock app, that you’re looking at for brief periods, has pretty much
nothing to do with whether you want seconds ticking away in a clock
that's in the corner of your screen almost all the time.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1490298] Re: Lowercase months in Portuguese language

2015-09-27 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
I would have expected these strings to come from glib. But "July" seems
to be uncapitalized as "julho" in glib20.

But then, "Wednesday" is translated in glib20 not as "quarta-feira", but
as "4ª feira", so I guess indicator-datetime is getting these strings
from somewhere else.

A site search reveals a few other projects
with capitalized weekday names, but none that indicator-datetime would
be using.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1491243] Re: padding needs slight adjustment

2015-09-27 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Well spotted, thanks Casey.

This might be an unfortunate problem with the digit "1" in particular.
It's made the same width as all the other digits (so that it will line
up in financial statements etc) by adding more space on either side of
it. This means there's more empty space to the left of a 1 than any
other digit. I don't think you'd have the same problem with a date
starting with any other digit. But then, since about 1/3 of all dates
start with the digit 1, it's still something we should fix somehow.

Sound-Indicator should provide more advanced options

Status in indicator-sound package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Device: BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition
  OS: Ubuntu 14.10 (r20)

I really love the new experience with the scrollable indicators at the
top panel. They give the possibility to have a lot more room for each
category while being easily accesible. This is why each indicator
should take advantage of this and put all the screen size into good
use. Sound indicator is one of those. I'll explain:

When you scroll down the sound indicator, it just gives you the option
of "volume" level. But this is a bit confusing as you don't actually
know if you are changing the volume for incoming calls, notifications,
music/games, alarms... So I think this should be "expanded" and
provide different controls for each category (as I show in the mockup
  pic I attach).

If this was implemented, the user would be able to easily change the
volume and vibrating for each type of alert: calls, notifications,
media and alarms. Easy on the eye, accesible with one touch even from
blocked device. Simple. No need for complex "Priority" or "At work" or
any other modes as in other OS.

Activating "Silence mode" button would just make the four categories
mute and vibrating-less, and inactivating the button the controls
would just revert to their last previous state. If from silence mode
you activate one vibration or level up some volume, the button would
automatically turn off as there is no silence mode any more.

Hope you can implement something like this soon in future system
updates, since it's really needed to make basic sound settings much
more clear and easy for the eye. As Shuttleworth would say, "Sound
  settings at your fingertips" :)

Status in Canonical System Image:

Status in Ubuntu UX:

Bug description:
Connect a bluetooth audio device (headset, speakers) to the ubuntu
  phone.

Play music/enter into a call, so that you have active audio to the
  device.

Adjust the volume, using the UI or keys on the ubuntu phone.

The volume of the bluetooth headset changes (good) but the ui contains
no clue that this is what the phone is doing (less good). The standard
volume indicator is shown. This can lead to user confusion if they are
not currently using the paired bluetooth accessory, and have forgotten
it is paired. On other devices the volume indicator changes to provide
visual feedback that the bluetooth device volume is being set.

  Desired resolution:

Please use this icon to replace the volume icon. The icon is bluetooth
volume which we had design already.

2015-09-22 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1485522 ***

If you weren't pressing the volume buttons at the same time as the sound
effects were playing, as you probably weren't, then (once again)
changing the role of SoundEffect and fixing bug 1418210/1485522 would
fix this bug. But if you're sure that you were pressing the volume

of bug 1485522.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1478506] Re: Apps change audio output role all the time

2015-09-18 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
It's on-topic because changing SoundEffect to the alert role (and fixing
bug 1418210, which should be fixed regardless) would fix this bug. The
volume hardware buttons would control the volume of the game sound
effects. But maybe there's a better solution. So let's step back a bit.

The goal of the audio roles is to minimize the number of times you feel
the need to adjust the volume per hour of use. We achieve that by
remembering your last preferred volume for different categories of
sound. It's a balancing act. The fewer categories we have, the more
likely it is that disparate things will share a category, so you'll more
often be changing the volume to suit one or the other. On the other
hand, the more categories we have, (a) the more you'll feel like the
phone is forgetting your choice when really it's just not sharing it
widely enough; (b) the more app developers will use the wrong one by
mistake; and (c) the more often sounds from multiple categories will be
playing at once, so you may get frustrated that the volume buttons
affect only one of them and not the other(s).

Then we give those categories a priority order, based mostly on what's
likely to be most important to you in that case when multiple categories
are playing at once. We put alarm first, because it's relatively
uncommon, but you can (if you want to) leave an alarm playing as long as
you like while fine-tuning its volume. We put alert last, because it's
likely to be short-lived, so (as demonstrated by this bug report) it's
not reasonable to expect you to adjust it during the brief period it's
playing.

Per spec, we currently have four categories, in order: alarm, phone (for call
audio), multimedia, and alert. I think that the alert category should include
both game sound effects (because they're often <1s long), and the ringtone
(because you're likely to want it to be at the same volume). Drawbacks of this
approach:
- Whenever a game is playing music as well, the volume buttons change the
volume of the music but not the sound effects.
- Any others?

If the ringtone issue was a problem, we could solve it by putting
ringtone into a category all by itself, or moving it to the alarm
category: alarm/ringtone, phone call, multimedia, alert. Most/all apps
should stop playing audio altogether when the phone is ringing, so the
change in order should make little difference. But it would still have
the same drawback with apps that play both music and sound effects: the
volume buttons will change the former but not the latter.

It seems to me the only way to resolve that drawback would be to put sound
effects and music in the same category, as they are now. But that would have a
different drawback:
- If you're using an app that plays only sound effects (e.g. each time you send
a message), while a different app is playing music, the sound effects will
often be too loud, and there's nothing you can do about it short of going into
Silent Mode.

I don't see any way to solve all those problems at once, so it's a
matter of choosing the least bad.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1478506] Re: Apps change audio output role all the time

2015-09-03 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
"I don't think we want to change the SoundEffect to the alert role. That
would make things even more complicated and not really help with this
bug."

It's not more complicated, because SoundEffect and Audio *already both
exist*. If they are supposed to use the same role, what is the point of
them both existing?

I described how it would fix the bug: it would result in SoundEffect
using the role that the volume controls are operating on most of the
time, and therefore the volume controls would change the volume of the
game sounds. Why do you say it would not really help?

"Also muting a game with some background music and sound effects (e.g.
Machines vs. Machines) would require both, the alert and the multimedia
slider to be muted."

Any game that plays background music should contain its own button for
muting the background music, because you might prefer to play your own
music in the background instead. This is routine on other platforms, so
I think it's quite reasonable to expect for Ubuntu games too.

Calendar Notifications need to be overhauled:
-- Calendar Notifications are displayed for too brief a period and should

-- Calendar Notifications are not currently appearing in the

-- Calendar Notification title is misleading ('Alarm') and should make
clear that the notification relates to a calendar event ('Event') and
  not a alarm-clock event.

-- Calendar Notification's should NOT override silent mode (unlike
clock-alarms) although the notification should still be displayed,
appear in the notification within indicators and cause the device to
vibrate (if enabled) - This is accepted/common behaviour for
notifications of this type on mobile.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1474078] Re: Provide a way to disable notifications from calendar events

2015-08-20 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Hmmm, you have a good point.

I imagined that the way apps would declare that they do notifications
would be the same way that they declare they use your location, or
camera, or or contacts, or an Online Account: by actually trying to do
it. I thought it wouldn't matter that it's a prompt in all the other
cases, but an actual first notification in the notifications case:
either way, the system could remember that a particular app had done it,
and then show only relevant apps in each list.

But the difference does matter. You may be in a situation where for a
certain embarrassing app, you know ahead of time that it would be a Very
Bad Idea for it ever to send you notifications. (Or, maybe, it would be
okay when the phone is unlocked but never when it's locked.) In that
case, you want to turn off notifications *before* the first notification
ever arrives. So it's not good enough for an app to show up in the list
only after it sends its first notification.

So, how could we solve this?

1. Just list every installed app in the Notifications list. Drawbacks: *
The list could get very long. * Confusion from listing apps, in a
Notifications list, that never send notifications to anyone.

2. Require apps to prompt for permission before sending notifications.
Typically this would happen during first run, or when you first use the
feature that involves notifications. If you deny an app permission, its
notifications don't appear anywhere. The Phone and Messaging apps would,
obviously, be permitted by default. Drawback: * An extra prompt per app.
(Previously I'd rejected this on the grounds that prompting you to ask
if it's okay to prompt you is a bit silly.)

3. Require an app to declare in its manifest that it might send
notifications. If it does this, it shows up in the Notifications
permissions list, even before you've opened it for the first time. If it
doesn't do this, any notifications are ignored. Drawbacks: * Extra
bureaucracy for app developers.

4. Some kind of static analysis of apps when they're published,
detecting whether they ever use notifications. If an app does, it shows
up in the Notifications permissions list, even before you've opened it
for the first time. Drawbacks: * Extra work for Ubuntu Store developers.
* Would need some other mechanism/policy for testing unpublished apps.

Any other possible solutions?

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1486498] [NEW] unity --reset wrongly says deprecated and fails to say what to do instead

2015-08-19 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

unity 7.2.5+14.04.20150603-0ubuntu1, Ubuntu 14.04

1. Switch to a console, for example by typing Ctrl Alt F1.
2. Enter unity --reset (without quotes).

What happens:

A. WARNING: no DISPLAY variable set, setting it to :0
B. ERROR: the reset option is now deprecated
C. Nothing else.

What's wrong with this:

A. Unity rambles about no DISPLAY variable being set, despite knowing that it
isn't going to use one anyway.
B. reset is either deprecated, or it is an error. It can't be both.
Deprecated means that something is planned to stop working sometime in the
future.
C. Unity exits without telling you what to use instead.

What should happen: either
A. unity --reset should Just Work, or
B. the message should say ERROR: the reset option is no longer allowed; and
C. it should tell you just to use unity by itself next time.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1484589] [NEW] Spurious volume notification when changing output role with headphones

2015-08-13 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 15.04 r90

1. Install the Maroon in Trouble game.
2. With headphones connected, start a new game.
3. After a while, disconnect the headphones.

What happens:
2. There's a volume notification each time a sound plays.
3. There are no more volume notifications.

What should happen:
2. There are no volume notifications, because neither the sound output nor the
volume is changing.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sound#notification: When the primary sound
output changes for any reason except an app request, or when the sound
volume changes for any reason, a confirmation bubble should appear ...
There should be no special notification when the active output role
changes.

This could be a side-effect of bug 1418210, but probably not, since it
is idempotent: the notifications keep happening even if you don't change
the volume in the meantime.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1478506] Re: Apps change system volume all the time

2015-08-13 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
It seems as if there aren't two problems here after all ... There are
three.

First, if you are quick enough to change the volume while a sound effect
is playing, you can see that it resets to the maximum the next time the
sound effect plays. That's bug 1418210.

Second, even if you don't do that, if headphones are connected, you
still get volume notifications from the output role changing. That makes
*this* bug much easier to notice (otherwise the only effect would be
that the hardware keys seemed like they didn't work), but it's
nonetheless separate, so I've reported it as bug 1484589.

And third, this bug, that the output role changes too briefly for you to
change its volume.

Maroon in Trouble uses the Qt SoundEffect API. http://doc.qt.io/qt-5
/qtquick-demos-maroon-example.html

Qt says that SoundEffect provides a way to play short sound effects,
like in video games ... You should use Audio for music playback.
http://doc.qt.io/qt-5/qml-multimedia.html#soundeffect

Apparently SoundEffect is using the multimedia role, which is not the
alert default, which causes a temporary role switch.

So, the way to fix this bug following the current design would be to
change SoundEffect in Qt to use the default alert role, while Audio
continues using the multimedia role.

Alternatively, we could change the volume controls to control not simply
the active output role, but something like the active output role
unless it was changed less than 5 seconds ago, in which case the
previous output role. But I think just fixing SoundEffect would be
simpler.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 623804] Re: Enable users to configure on the previous 'shutdown timer' feature

2015-08-10 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
In interaction design we have an awkward word, workflow. It's used for
the steps you go through to do something, even if that thing has nothing
to do with work.

At first sight, the countdown seems to offer better workflow, because
for some people at least, it replaces a confirmation with an undo. You
can trigger the command, go away, and come back within a minute to undo
your decision if you change your mind.
http://alistapart.com/article/neveruseawarning

Unfortunately it often doesn't work, because of something that happens
at the end of the workflow. If you happen to have any app open that asks
for confirmation before it quits -- most commonly, if an app has any
unsaved documents -- that confirmation will happen *after* the
countdown, when you might not even be there to see it. So your session
will stay wide open until the screen lock kicks in, which is a security
problem. Those confirmations can't happen before the countdown, because
if they did, apps would be quitting before you even saw the shutdown
prompt, including when you'd chosen the command by mistake, which is
precisely the problem the prompt exists to prevent.

This will happen more often to some people than to others, but it's
unlikely that there's any correlation between how often it happens to
you and how willing+confident you are in changing system settings. For
example, nobody commenting on bug 548415 even mentioned the possibility.

So, I don't think a setting can improve things. Someday, if even PC apps
routinely save state and documents constantly, they won't need to put up
save-changes confirmations any more, so we won't have to worry about
those showing up at the end of the timer, so we can reintroduce the
timer for everyone. But not today.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1478506] Re: Apps change system volume all the time

2015-08-09 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
I think there are two possibilities here.

One is that this is merely a duplicate of bug 1418210: volume level is
reset anytime a new QAudioOutput is created,

The other is that we have our output roles muddled. I was told that the
default role for sound output -- not alarms, not phone calls, and not
media playback, but anything else -- was called alert. So I specified
that the volume controls should default to controlling the alert
volume, switching to another role temporarily only when that other role
is being used.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sound?action=diffrev2=137rev1=136 Alarms,
phone calls, and media playback almost always last for more than a
couple of a seconds, so you have time to change their volume.

But if apps are -- or whatever audio API apps use is -- by default using
some output role that is *not* alert, then we'd see pretty much what's
described here: the volume controls switch to showing that other role,
but it's usually too brief for you to change the volume before the
control reverts to showing the alert volume. So it *looks* like apps are
changing the volume themselves, when really they're just using an output
role that you usually don't see the volume of and don't have time to
change the volume of.

As well as being annoying in itself, the existence of this bug is
causing confusion in other bug reports about sound volume UI,
particularly bug 1389761, bug 1396986, and bug 1478075.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1474078] Re: Provide a way to disable notifications from calendar events

2015-08-07 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
I don't see why this is a Calendar bug. System Settings Notifications
screen should automatically list Calendar along with every other app
that has requested a notification since it was last installed. The
Calendar app shouldn't need to do anything special for that. If app
developers have to do anything special to show up in the list, sometimes
they'll forget.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1478075] Re: Sound indicator should only indicate ringtone volume

2015-08-06 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Per spec, if an app/game is playing sounds but not music, that is the
alert output role. As long as an alarm is not sounding, a phone call
is not in progress, and you're not playing music some other way, all
volume controls should adjust the volume of that app's sounds.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sound#primary-output

In other words, if apps obey the media volume setting for things that
aren't music/video, that's probably a bug.

I just realized that when I added output roles to the spec, I updated
the design for the System Settings slider and the volume buttons, but I
neglected to update the design for the indicator slider to match. Spec
updated. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sound?action=diffrev2=148rev1=147
But that doesn't seem to be related to this bug report, and I still have
no reason to think that this bug report is valid.

On the phone, the volume indicator follows the current active stream
volume (music, alarm etc.) to show and control via slider and/or
  volume buttons.

The indicator icon and slider should only ever follow the ringtone
volume. I'm not sure whether volume buttons should work for alarms.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1450894] Re: [Indicators] Messaging indicator does not indicate that there is a new message

2015-08-06 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
So according to the usability test, 7/11 participants failed to
interpret the meaning of blue.

How many interpreted the meaning of green? Was it any better?

I'd be surprised if Michael quoted above, for example, would say: I
don't know why it would need to be blue ... but green, green makes sense
to me.

Or if Hansie would change his belief that The fact that it is present
indicates there is something there for me to do merely because it was
sometimes green rather than sometimes blue (if he even saw that happen).

If the logic is, the menu is where we list notifications, therefore the
indicator has to be there all the time, therefore we need to use visual
design to distinguish new messages received or not, then maybe the
premise is wrong.

This is very confuse to understand that the indicator is in a

Please use the current ubuntu theme green to indicate that there is a

Change the LED light to green as well.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1373404] Re: [notification] No warning of high volume level

2015-08-04 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Unfortunately, it turns out that the document I found which appeared to
be the EU regulation was not the actual regulation. It was a preparatory
document for producing the regulation. (The original document I was
pointed to in bug 1370591 was a press release, even further off the
mark.)

As a result, the design did not comply with the regulation. This
explains Albert's observation here that some handsets show a
notification at 70/80% that doesn't let you increase the volume unless
you say 'ok, sure': that requirement is part of the actual regulation.

Complying with the regulation is now tracked in bug 1480912, which has
to be private for now because it includes copyrighted attachments.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1378350] Re: Need to allow multiple apps to handle the same url patterns

2015-08-04 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Specification updated.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/URLDispatcher?action=diffrev2=12rev1=11

** Changed in: ubuntu-ux
Status: In Progress = Fix Committed

** Description changed:

  Steps:
  * install gmail and dekko apps

  Expected:
  * when using a mailto: URL (see bug #1351222) URL, the user should be asked
which app to open (and cache the response optionally?)

  Current:
  * not sure what would happen ;)

  Design resolution _

Case 1: If no email client is installed and a user clicks on a 'mail to'
link, the user should be prompted to download the Dekko app.

Case 2: If the user has Dekko installed, then clicking on the 'mail to'
link should open the Dekko client -- compose mail screen to the 'mail
  to' address.

Case 3: If the user has Dekko and Gmail installed, the 'mail to' link by
default should open in the Dekko client. However, the user can change
their mail client preferences in system settings.

Case 4: If the user has Gmail and another mail client installed, the
'mail to' link should default to the first client that was installed on
their device (which would be the default mail client preference in
system settings - this can be changed by the user via system settings).

  Notes:
+
+ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/URLDispatcher: Whenever the URL dispatcher is
+ called on to open an address that multiple apps have registered for, it
+ should open a “Use App” dialog, with a centered grid of labelled buttons
+ with the icon for each applicable app, followed by a “Cancel” button.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 655580] Re: [indicators] Add a quick controls for microphone (mute/unmute)

2015-08-03 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
** Description changed:

Right now, the sound indicator allows only to mute/unmute or change the
  speakers (output) level.

It would be great if it could also provide a quick control for the
  microphone (input).

By doing so, users will have a quick feedback regarding the reason why
the sound input is not working... in most cases the input level being
  muted or too low.

- (This is desired for an OEM by March 2015; see private bug 1417012 for

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1396986] Re: System Settings Sound Ringer volume - only changes ringer volume when no other sounds playing

2015-08-03 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
** Description changed:

System Settings Sound Ringer volume is always active and always
labelled ringer, however it only changes the ringer volume if no other
sound is currently playing on the system.

- Controlling the currently active audio function is as designed for
- normal volume keys etc. but if the slider is going to have a particular

- audio function.
+ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sound#Settings: The “Silent Mode” switch

Per spec, the sound menu already contains a microphone slider whenever a
VoIP or sound recording stream is active. That shouldn't be the case
whenever the microphone indicator is present instead.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1389761] Re: Don't show the volume overlay when changing the volume with the slider

2015-07-31 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
I thought I was so clever in thinking of this idea, then I researched
and discovered that it's what iOS already does.
https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/MediaPlayer/Reference/MPVolumeView_Class/index.html

The sound indicator does suppress the notification when it is shown

On the PC it does, but not on the phone. And if it's not obvious enough
even for Canonical engineers to do it, that bodes ill for app
developers. With this scheme, they get the notification-suppressing
behavior for free whenever they choose the easy way of embedding a
volume control.

what if a notification goes off while the app is open ? you will
suddenly adjust the notification volume.

Yes, that's a drawback. But then, a notification probably should
temporarily quieten media playback, so changing the media volume
wouldn't be that meaningful during those few seconds anyway.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1478075] Re: Sound indicator should only indicate ringtone volume

2015-07-30 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Android and iOS combined have about 96% market share, and neither of
them work the way you describe. That doesn't necessarily mean either of
them have the ideal design. But it does mean you have to give a lot more
explanation before you use the word should so much.

It's true that with the current UI you can't change the ringtone volume
while media is playing. But there's still no explanation here of why
that would actually be a problem, or why it follows that the best
possible solution to the problem would be for the sound indicator to
only indicate ringtone volume. Did you consider any other possible
solutions?

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1389761] Re: Don't show the volume overlay when changing the volume with the slider

2015-07-30 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
So, here's the plan.

We'll add a system volume slider as a standard toolkit widget that any app
can use. This slider will do three special things:
(a) use standard volume icons by default;
(b) automatically reflect, and adjust, the system volume for the active output
role, without the app having to do anything at all;
(c) suppress volume change notifications (but not primary sound output change
notifications) whenever it is present in the active window. (But not, for
example, when it is in a window behind the active window.)

The sound menu should use this slider, fixing the problem that redundant
volume notifications come up with the current slider.

System Settings should use this slider, fixing the problem that
redundant volume notifications come up with the current System Settings
slider.

And any music player, for example the Music app, should use this slider
too. An app should be able to customize its appearance, while still
getting its behavior for free.

One drawback of this plan is that it won't fix bug 652978: it won't
suppress notifications for track changes.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1478075] Re: Sound indicator should only indicate ringtone volume

2015-07-28 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
There doesn't seem to be a problem described at all here, and the
proposal is perplexing.

Why should the indicator slider change only the ringtone volume? That
would mean if you were playing music, the indicator slider would not
change the volume of the music, which would be ... surprising. And it
would mean the indicator slider and the volume buttons controlled
different things, which would also be surprising. Unless you think the
volume buttons should do the same, and control only the ringtone -- but
in that case there would be no way at all of changing music that was
playing in the background, which would be even worse.

Multiple sliders in the indicator is bug 1437598.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1396986] Re: System Settings Sound Ringer volume - only changes ringer volume when no other sounds playing

2015-07-28 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
That the typical alert is far too brief a tone to control its volume
does not necessarily mean that it should have a permanent control in
the panel. That problem could be fixed by following the spec: the
volume controls should control alert volume whenever none of an alarm,
phone call, or media are playing -- that is, most of the time.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sound#primary-output Anyway, that seems to be
separate from the two bugs in the bug description.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1437598] Re: Sound-Indicator should provide more advanced options

2015-07-26 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Quite often when a bug report has the word should in its summary, the
actual problem is left unstated, or at least underanalyzed. The problem,
as far as you've stated it, is that when you change the volume, you
don't actually know if you are changing the volume for incoming calls,
notifications, music/games, alarms. That may be a real problem, and if
there's evidence that it is, there are several possible solutions. But
the particular solution of providing separate sliders for each would be
unlikely to help, for three reasons.

First, the design implies that you can meaningfully set volumes in
advance, but this is unlikely. Some media are much louder than others,
some games are much louder than others, and some callers are much louder
than others. The only one that you could set meaningfully in advance
would be alarm volume.

Second, because you usually can't meaningfully set volumes in advance,
when you are wanting to change the volume of something, quite often you
are in a time-sensitive situation. When an alarm goes off, you may have
time to click the hardware volume keys a few times before dismissing the
alarm, but you're much less likely to have time to navigate into an
indicator menu and find one of four sliders before people start staring
at you wondering why you haven't turned the alarm off yet. Similarly, if
you start playing an action game but realize it's too loud (or too quiet
to hear instructions), you're much more likely to be able to hit the
volume buttons without crashing/dying than you are to be able to use an
indicator menu without crashing/dying (if the game even lets you access
the indicators at all).

And third, even people who aren't in time-sensitive situations will
usually use the hardware volume buttons rather than the sliders inside a
menu, simply because the hardware buttons are much easier to get to.
Mainstream phones are unlikely ever to have more than one set of
hardware volume buttons, so we can't avoid the problem of having to
calculate what it is that people want to change the volume of.

If the problem you describe is a genuine problem for many people, we
could solve it in a much simpler way: by having volume notifications
label which role (e.g. Alarm, Call, Media) has just had its volume
changed, instead of the current design of only showing which output
(e.g. Speaker, Headphones) has just had its volume changed.

Sound-Indicator should provide more advanced options

Status in indicator-sound package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Device: BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition
  OS: Ubuntu 14.10 (r20)

I really love the new experience with the scrollable indicators at the
top panel. They give the possibility to have a lot more room for each
category while being easily accesible. This is why each indicator
should take advantage of this and put all the screen size into good
use. Sound indicator is one of those. I'll explain:

When you scroll down the sound indicator, it just gives you the option
of volume level. But this is a bit confusing as you don't actually
know if you are changing the volume for incoming calls, notifications,
music/games, alarms... So I think this should be expanded and
provide different controls for each category (as I show in the mockup
  pic I attach).

If this was implemented, the user would be able to easily change the
volume and vibrating for each type of alert: calls, notifications,
media and alarms. Easy on the eye, accesible with one touch even from
blocked device. Simple. No need for complex Priority or At work or
any other modes as in other OS.

Activating Silence mode button would just make the four categories
mute and vibrating-less, and inactivating the button the controls
would just revert to their last previous state. If from silence mode
you activate one vibration or level up some volume, the button would
automatically turn off as there is no silence mode any more.

Hope you can implement something like this soon in future system
updates, since it's really needed to make basic sound settings much
more clear and easy for the eye. As Shuttleworth would say, Sound
  settings at your fingertips :)

I have an EliteBook 8540w with internal and external battery running Ubuntu
11.10 (oneiric).
  Linux 3.0.0-12-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 7 14:56:25 UTC 2011 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The power indicator (indicator-power, version 0.9-0ubuntu2) does not combine
the status of both batteries.
E.g. if one battery still has 1 hour left, and the other has 2 hours left, it
will show 1:00 or 2:00, instead of 3:00.
E.g. When the external battery is almost run out (but the internal one is
still charged), the indicator becomes red, instead of staying white/grey. It
should only be red when both batteries are almost drained.
E.g. when the internal one is fully charged, and the external one is
discharging, the estimated time show is the estimated time that the external
one will be discharged, not taking into account the internal one. see attached
screenshot (total time show should be around 4 hours)

The original applet provided by gnome (I re-enabled the notification
area) does (still) have the behavior as I expect. In other words, this
  is a regression compared to 10.10 (pre-unity).

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Power#multiple-batteries: If a device has
multiple batteries and uses only one of them at a time, they should be
presented as separate items inside the battery menu, but everywhere
else they should be aggregated. Their percentages should be averaged.
If any are discharging, the aggregated time remaining should be the
maximum of the times for all those that are discharging, plus the sum
of the times for all those that are idle. Otherwise, the aggregated
time remaining should be the the maximum of the times for all those
  that are charging.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1409696] Re: There is no 'headset' icon in the indicator bar when a headset is connected

2015-07-07 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Space is at a premium in the status bar, for reasons of both real estate
(there just isn't that much room) and elegance (the more icons, the more
distracting).

So it would not be ideal to add an extra icon for headsets. Nor would it
be practical to change the existing icon to show a headset: most of the
space of the icon is taken up by the volume waves, so there would be
little room to show a recognizable headset.

However, the actual problem -- no visual indication that a wired
headset has been connected to the phone -- can be solved in another
way. As I have already specified, but has not been implemented yet, when
you connect (or disconnect) a headset you should get the same kind of
notification as if you changed the volume. And that notification should
name, and use the icon of, the current sound output.

** Changed in: ubuntu-ux
   Status: Triaged = Fix Committed

** Summary changed:

- There is no 'headset' icon in the indicator bar when a headset is connected
+ no visual indication that a headset is in use

** Description changed:

Reported by an OEM who's phone currently does have such an icon, there

  phone and in use:

  [Procedures]
  1.insert the earphone

- should be has earphone icon and notification shows in Status Bar
+ should be has earphone icon and notification
  [Actual results]
- There is no earphone icon in indicator Bar when inserting the earphone
+ There is no earphone icon when inserting the earphone
+
+ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sound#notification: When the primary sound
+ output changes for any reason except an app request, or when the sound
+ volume changes for any reason, a confirmation bubble should appear
+ showing the icon, and volume, of the primary output for the current
+ active role. (For example, when you plug in headphones, a notification
+ bubble should appear showing the current volume for headphones — both to

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1303249] Re: Indicator-datetime doesn't show evolution/eds calendar color for all-day events (Trusty/Utopic/Vivid)

2015-07-06 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Khurshid, the part you quoted I wrote in January 2011.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TimeAndDate?action=diffrev2=17rev1=16 I
meant that the icon should be in the same color, in the menu, as its
calendar is in Evolution.

That would help distinguish items with the same title, but it wouldn't
be a complete solution, because the colors might be similar, and some
people are color-blind. Please report a separate bug on that.

It used to show respective calendar color from evolution for all-day
events clock/alarm icon for events with time. But with latest
update, it seems it has stopped showing evolution calendar color for
  all-day events in indicator-datetime.

However alarm/clock icon still appears as usual. I have attached a
  screenshot.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 964580] Re: Icons of currently installing applications should go to Software Center installation screen when selected in the launcher

2015-07-06 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
As described in bug 676453, the Launcher icon is supposed to fill up as
the installation completes. This would make clear that the app is not
launchable yet.

Even if it didn't, launching Ubuntu Software Center to its screen for
the app would not be useful in this case. There's nothing useful to do
there in this situation.

Bug description:
A new behaviour of Unity 5.8 is to animatedly move the icon of an
application being installed in the Software Center to the dash. This
is quite a good idea but it falls apart when clicking on said icon
doesn't actually do anything during installation. While installing, it
should go to the installation progress page of the Software Center.
When the installation is complete, it should launch the application
  instead.

Bug description:
On the brightness page, there is a slider to set brightness and a
  checkbox to set it automatically.

When I select the automatic brightness, I was expecting the slider to
show the current brightness level. Instead, it just keeps the old
value manually set. I find this a little confusing: I have a slider
whose value I can change, but will do nothing while the checkbox is
marked, and the value it shows is different from the current
  brightness of the screen.

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BrightnessAndDisplays#Phone: Because users
have different preferences, the function should also be user-
adjustable. This should be achieved by altering the display brightness
manually while 'Adjust automatically' is checked.
