Bug description:
  The appmenu-qt5 code has hardcoded Xlib calls that cause Unity 8 (or
  any other Qt-based applicaiton) to die on startup when run on Mir
  instead of X11.

  This library extension should either not hardcode X11 (preferred) or
  check for the presence of a $DISPLAY environment variable and avoid
  code paths that assume X11.

  The Unity 8 desktop currently has a hard-coded check for
  $QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME and unsets it as a workaround.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1670657] Re: No log out option in session indicator in unity8 in Qemu VM

2017-03-14 Thread Michał Sawicz
Right, sounds like QEMU does not pass our Platform plugin's "isPC"
criteria:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~unity-team/unity8/trunk/view/head:/plugins/Unity/Platform/platform.cpp#L29
> m_isPC = (m_chassis == "desktop" || m_chassis == "laptop" || m_chassis ==
> "server");

We really should not be making decisions based on that... Maybe in the
indicator, certainly not in unity8.

  Time can not be read when alarm is set (while swiping/opening

Status in indicator-datetime package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I am on krillin r23 stable (OTA-4), but I have reproduced this bug on
  mako (stable channel) too.

  0. launch a full screen app like Machine Vs Machines. NO alarm set.
  1. can't see the time (expected) because when in full screen: top bar
indicator is hidden
  2. swipe from top edge and focus time indicator: you can read the time at the
top of the time label indicator (expected)

  Now

  0. launch a full screen app like Machine Vs Machines. At least 1 alarm is set
and due in the futur.
  1. can't see the time (expected) because when in full screen : top bar
indicator is hidden
  2. swipe from top edge and focus time indicator: you can't read the time at
the top of the time label's indicator because the time is replaced by the alarm
icon (not expected)

  Current UX to see the time (alternative solution until it get fixed):

  3. swipe from left side, and focus another app not in full screen (or go
scope with left swipe)
  4. see time from top bar indicators.
  5. swipe from right to get back at your focused apps.

  Or :
  3. push power (screen off)
  4. push power (screen on, lock screen)
  5. check the time at the top bar indicator
  6. unlock to get back to yout focused app.

  5 or 6 steps are needed to just watch the time while only 1or2 could
  do the work if the time was always shown on the indicator time's icon.

  I beleive this is not a niche need :
   * Alarms are usual
   * Full screen apps too
   * checking time too

  PS: please affect the bug to indicator if needed, It fails when I
  tryed submit from here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source

  i initially had filed a bug against indicator-datetime but after
  checking all environment variables together with seb128 it appears
  there is no reason for this to happen and according to him it must be
  something unity8 or a QT component does to the LC_TIME or other locale
  settings.

  Initially when booting in a german localized install i properly have a
  24h display on teh lock screen ... a few seconds later (as soon as the
  panel clock is loaded) the clock switches to 12h display everywhere in
  the UI until recently that still showed AM/PM ... in one of the latest
  images (r27 and above) the AM/PM display is gone but the clock still
  switches to 12h display.

  A recent change in the interest of security removed access to the

  This was an accentual change based on a misunderstanding

  There had been a plan to support media playback control via the sound
  indicator. Without this the user must unlock the phone in order to
  simply pause the music or change songs, etc.

  Desired resolution:

  - Revert the change that caused this issue

  - Add a switch to System Settings to enable security conscious user to
  switch off Launcher and Greeter access while the phone is locked.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1630725] Re: Bluetooth settings are showed but my pc doesn't have the bluetooth

2016-10-11 Thread Michał Sawicz
So the problem is that in the current implementation there's no way for
an indicator to hide itself altogether, it can only be hidden from the
collapsed status bar.

We should probably have a separate state for the indicator to hide
completely, and/or hide icons for whom backends are not running.

  Reproduce step #1:
  1. For convenience, set screen time out to 30 seconds.
  2. Pull power indicator down, then set brightness to some value above the
lowest.
  3. Leave the indicator open and wait until screen dims the brightness.

  Expected result: Brightness slider stays at value set in step 2.
  Actual result: Brightness slider jumps (actually, slides smoothly) to lowest
value.

  Reproduce step #2:
  1. Set brightness to the maximum.
  2. Slide brightness slider to minimum quickly.

  Expected result: Slider sticks to the finger.
  Actual result: The slider seems to jumps around. And it seems like it tries

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1560188] Re: unity8 hang w/ CPU pegged

Note the landing above is not just the MPs it lists, since the two
previous releases of indicator-datetime were xenial-only - the full diff
between the two vivid overlay versions is, I believe, here:

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1560188] Re: unity8 hang w/ CPU pegged

It's most probably the addition of calendar to the indicator that caused
this, so we might revert that for the time being, until we understand
what the issue is.

I've tracked it down to this indicator-datetime landing:

https://requests.ci-train.ubuntu.com/#/ticket/893

Downgrading indicator-datetime to the version below (or simply stopping
it before following the repro steps above) prevents the freeze.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1478075] Re: Sound indicator should only indicate ringtone volume

2015-07-28 Thread Michał Sawicz
Totally, as I wrote in the other bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity8/+bug/1291458/comments/2
MeeGo had this solved really well.

Just one thing I'm not sure how it worked there - app volume. What
Michael's proposing is that we only really have 'ringtone' + 'other'
volumes (I'd add 'alarms' to that, changed in the clock app) - I'm just
not 100% sure we should put music, video and general app sounds in the
same bag, but that's what the design exercise should define I think.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1478075] Re: Sound indicator should only indicate ringtone volume

2015-07-28 Thread Michał Sawicz
Because when playing music, you can't change ringtone volume (and they
*are*, even today, different), they are two very separate things IMO.

As I described, the volume slider as we have it today, should not really
be a volume slider at all, but rather a profile-change-slider, including
silent, quiet and a handful of volumes for the ringtone. The
hardware buttons should totally follow the currently active sound,
falling back to ringtone volume if nothing's playing.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1443178] Re: Accounts Service always relies on language fallback if never set by the user

Title:
  Accounts Service always relies on language fallback if never set by
  the user

Status in the base for Ubuntu mobile products:
  New
Status in accountsservice package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress
Status in unity8 package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  current build number: 169
  device name: mako
  channel: ubuntu-touch/devel-proposed
  alias: ubuntu-touch/vivid-proposed
  last update: 2015-04-12 20:38:14
  version version: 169
  version ubuntu: 20150412
  version device: 20150210
  version custom: 20150412

  This causes a bad side effect when changing volume via indicator-
  sound, as that will cause a sync to accountsservice in order to sync
  the volume. Once that sync happens, it will request the user
  properties, and in case the user doesn't have a valid language at
  /var/lib/AccountsService/users/user, it will always rely on the
  fallback, which would be fine if calculating the fallback wasn't 't so
  cpu or i/o intensive (and that happens multiple times).

  As a test, just flash latest vivid image on mako, don't set any
  language when the wizard shows up, run top and then change the volume
  by pressing volume up/down. This is what I see with mako:

   PID USER  PR  NIVIRTRESSHR S  %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
  2609 phablet   20   0  499660 121220  52688 S   7.6  6.5   0:41.69 unity8
  5600 phablet   20   03676   1760   1288 R   6.0  0.1   0:00.19
language-option
  1312 root  20   0  211532  15572  11344 S   1.9  0.8   0:07.25
unity-system-co
  1316 phablet   20   0   36532   3792   2928 S   1.3  0.2   0:01.66
accounts-daemon

  And the reason why:
  src/user.c
  ...
  static void
  user_get_property (GObject*object,
 guint   param_id,
 GValue *value,
 GParamSpec *pspec)
  {
  User *user = USER (object);
  ...
  case PROP_LANGUAGE:
  if (user-language)
  g_value_set_string (value, user-language);
  else
  g_value_set_string (value, user_get_fallback_value
(user, Language));
  break;
  case PROP_FORMATS_LOCALE:
  if (user-formats_locale)
  g_value_set_string (value, user-formats_locale);
  else
  g_value_set_string (value, user_get_fallback_value
(user, FormatsLocale));
  break;

  user_set_property never gets called unless the user changes the system
  language from system-settings or wizard.

  Once you change the language, it will set a valid language at
  /var/lib/AccountsService/users/user, causing this behavior to stop.

  Another bad side effect of this issue is that it takes quite a while
  for accountsservice to reply back to indicator-sound when the sync
  happens, possibly causing sync aborts (as indicator-sound only waits 1
  second before triggering another sync).

  Some possible ways to fix this issue:
  1) Make wizard to set language even when the selected language is already the
default one;
  2) Change accountsservice to save the fallback value at the first time it
gets that from the system;

OK so the unity8/wizard part seems to be that the language isn't being
stored in AS if it's not changed from default. This could very well be
libubuntu-system-settings then.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1421192] Re: Initial boot wizard does not include timezone

FWIW, we'd probably rather set the time (and timezone) automagically on
boot, either from GSM or over WiFi. Whether we then want to give the
user the option to change the auto-detected TZ remains to be determined.

Yeah, what I described we're not doing yet, but I believe that should be

  [Indicators] The indicator envelop icon should not change colour to
  green and only be present when there are new notifications.

Status in Ubuntu UX bugs:
  New
Status in indicator-messages package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Actual behaviour:

  - Green envelope is displayed when there are incoming notifications.
  - Envelope icon turns white when user sees the notification centre.
  - Envelope icon turns grey when there are no notifications.

  The presence of a grey envelope notification icon (when there are no
  notifications) can mislead users into thinking they have an
  outstanding notification. The presence of this icon (with the
  exception of informational icons) suggest that something is active/on
  or requires attention (eg. unread messages or missed calls). Users
  only expect to see the icon when there are incoming notifications.

  Expected behaviour:

  - Monochrome envelope icon.
  - The white envelope icon only appears on the status bar when new
notifications arrive.
  - If user sees the notification centre (or acts on the notification when it
arrives), the envelope icon should disappear.

  What I expected to happen:

  The indicator icon should be grey now and when the screen is turned
  off, the LED should not blink.

  What happened:

  The indicator icon is still white and the LED blinks when the phone's

  This is quite bad since it means that the LED is consuming power all

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1387691] Re: Media Player should not be visible in the app scope and launcher

2015-02-05 Thread Michał Sawicz
Output from a chat with tvoss today:

We foresee two parallel approaches: a media player widget and a player
using trusted sessions.

1)
If your app has video playback caps + apparmor profile, you should just be able
to go:

VideoPlayer { // name TBD, component to be ~extracted from the current media
player app into the SDK
source: url://to/video
}

That's it. It should be an item as any other in your QML scene, and have
a button to put it fullscreen. Hardware decoding included.

2)
If you don't want to embed the player in your app, dispatching a URL to it
should result in the video player opening as a trusted session for your app,
covering it whole.

That might not necessarily be the behaviour we want for windowed mode,
where we might want an actual player app, but that we'll have to
determine when we get there.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1401802] [NEW] Calendar reminder notifications became queued, non-interactive and easy to miss

2014-12-12 Thread Michał Sawicz
Public bug reported:

With the recent indicator-datetime update the reminder notifications time out
and are not interactive any more, meaning that:
- can't dismiss (have to wait for the sound/notification to time out)
- can't snooze (I know the feature didn't work, but that was a missing feature,
not a thing we didn't want?)
- if you missed the notification, you missed the reminder

Not sure if the reason is the same, but they started queueing, too, i.e.
if there's two reminders for the same time, sound will play for both
(bug #1340248), but the two notifications will be shown one after
another.

This is a UX regression in my opinion, even if it fixes bug #1320880.

There is actually no clear design for this, I'm afraid,

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1358890] Re: [Notifications] Competing notifications when two alarms kick at the same time

2014-12-12 Thread Michał Sawicz
One reason for keeping them separate is that it'd be easier to miss what
the alarms/reminders relate to if they've been folded up.

Another is that you might want to snooze one of them, but not the other.
I'd be fine with snoozing all or none, but with calendar reminders you
might have per-event snoozing rules, which at some point we should
probably respect.

  A cousin of bug #1354406

  Some of the early testers are hitting a use case that we didn't
  account for, that of multiple alarms set for the same time.

  Indicator-datetime currently tries to pull up notifications for, and
  play sounds for, both notifications. That's happening by accident and
  is clearly not the right approach.

  I can think of a couple of approaches we might take:

  -- SOLUTION --
  If 2 or more alarms have been triggered, the notification at any time will
display:
Title: 2 Alarms
Subtitle: [Label 1] 10:00, [Label 2] 10:01

  The sound of the first alarm will be played. If they have the same
  time, the one that has been created first.

  - Revert the change that caused this issue

  - Add a switch to System Settings to enable security conscious user to

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1394253] [NEW] Bluetooth discoverability confusing

2014-11-19 Thread Michał Sawicz
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. go to Bluetooth in Settings
2. go out of the Bluetooth pane

When going in, the page says Discoverable and lists the name. When you
go out... is it still discoverable? Was it already discoverable before?

The indicator icon (or menu) doesn't change, either, so there's
basically no way to know if you're discoverable when outside of the
settings page.

Yeah, it does look like there's a split-second timeout (it actually
looks like a deferred initialization of the view, especially as the

That still doesn't help with what happens when I close that page.

Title:
  Calendar reminders should not use the alarm role

Bug description:
  Calendar reminders seem to use the alarm role, which means muting your
  phone does not impact them.

  It should either use the same role as the ringer, or maybe a
  completely separate one.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1389008] Re: Often fails to connect to Pulseaudio and unity-notifications (results in missing volume notifications and improper volume control)

2014-11-07 Thread Michał Sawicz
 Oh, my. Found the issue. Unity8 is starting the indicators BEFORE
unity8 starts.

Yes, because when we were adding that signal, we were told that that's
desired ;)

Bug description:
  Often after boot indicator-sound fails to connect to Pulseaudio and to
  unity-notifications using libnotify. Therefore, volume notifications
  aren't shown and changes to the volume role go unnoticed, which then
  results in improper volume control.

  As already mentioned in the original bug description, running restart
  indicator-sound resolves the issue.

  Original description:

  Happens often after phone boot where changing volume by touch or by
  phone buttons. Volume correctly changes, but the
  org.freedesktop.Notifications popup isn't displayed.

  The problem seems fixes itself if you run restart indicator-sound,
  so maybe there's an issue with i-sound and unity-notifications
  starting at the same time, with the former querying the latter's
  capabilities before it's ready for business?

Is it not possible for the indicator to retry the connection?

  I'm in timzone UTC -4
  If I have a missed call or sms that shows up in the indicator, it will
sometimes incorrect be displayed as Yesterday time even though it happened
today. This happens if the missed call is anytime after 8pm local time.

  I believe it's because the determination for that label is using UTC
  time rather than converting to the local timezone. It should be
  changed to use local time zone.

Bug description:
  build 88, rtm on krillin

  - unlock the phone
  - make sure messaging-app is not running
  - send two sms messages to the phone
  - once they appear, open the messaging-menu
  - reply to the first message by clicking the message which makes it expand to
reveal the send field
  - this works
  - attempt to reply to the second message by clicking the message to make it
expand

  Expected results:
  the item should expand and allow you to send a message

  Actual results:
  the item cannot be expanded and you can't reply
